StKFC draft selection history
Our 1st pick on Thursday is #3. Our last (and only) #3 pick was in 1989 and netted us Jody Arnol who ended up playing a massive 13 matches.
Our next pick is #18. Our only pick #18 was in 1987 and got us Patrick Browne (a household name hey!!) - he didnt play a game!
Next is #19. Finally some moderate success here - Barry Hall in 1995 who gave us 88 matches before nicking off to be a Premiership captain.
After that is pick #83. We've only had one and in 2008 used it to get Colm Begley from Brisbane. He only played one match for us........and then went home.
Left hope Thursday night is a little more successful as our form so far isnt that crash hot!!

Re: StKFC draft selection history
Is comparing this years draft to the 80s an equal comparison in terms of the significance it now plays in the AFL . Back then it was only just getting off the ground and clubs weren't as well organised, resourced and researched as they are now. What I'm saying is there is a lot better chance of us using our selections much better than we did in the 80s...like we did back in the early 2000s.
Re: StKFC draft selection history
I understand but here are some conmparisons:
Selection 3, 1986 - Melbourne got Steve Febey - 258 matches
#18 - in 1988 North got Anthony Stevens - 292mt
#19 - Melbourne 1999 - Brad Green - 254mt
#83 - Carlton 2009, Aaron Joseph - 60mt

Re: StKFC draft selection history
Have to agree Cairnsman, the way the draft is set up now and the whole process is way more professional than what it was. The draft camp, measuring and assessment of each and every individual is so thorough that it has a tendency to separate the kids that really want to play at an elite level. If we want to compare drafts we should then look at the period we picked Rooey,Kosi,BJ,Joey,Dal and Fish. I'd go to say that the draft has probably improved quite a ways since then.Unfortunately there will always be a certain element that we may consider a fail but the ability and effort put in by clubs to identify talent has become one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.
Re: StKFC draft selection history
Drafting started to get serious in the late nineties. Before that it was hit and miss.

Or if you don't want to pick and choose, look at the players taken one year before.Bono wrote:I understand but here are some conmparisons:

Re: StKFC draft selection history
Pick no 83 will be Tom Curren.
The pick is being used to upgrade a rookie.
We will only have three genuine picks in this draft.
We need elite players, we have more than enough tryers.

Re: StKFC draft selection history
Jason Gram was originally a pick 19 at the Lions.
Pick 3 Jodie Arnol is an interesting one ... 1989 draft was amazing for indigenous talent.
Pick 4 - Peter Matera (2 flags/norm smith)
Pick 9 - Gavin Wanganeen (2 flags/brownlow)
Pick 12 - Dale Kickett
Pick 17 Gilbert Mcadam

Re: StKFC draft selection history
Our top ten selections since 2000 have averaged 158 games and counting. That's the best of any team in that period.
However, out of the eight players that make up that group, at least half won't / haven't finished their career at St Kilda.
2007 - Pick 9 - Ben McEvoy (91* games)
2006 - Pick 9 - David Armitage (92* games)
2003 - Pick 8 - Raphael Clarke (85 games)
2002 - Pick 1 - Brendon Goddard (227* games)
2001 - Pick 2 - Luke Ball (206* games)
2001 - Pick 5 - Xavier Clarke (106 games)
2000 - Pick 1 - Nick Riewoldt (259 games)
2000 - Pick 2 - Justin Koschitzke (200 games)

Re: StKFC draft selection history
not having a go at armo but wonder who was
#10 in 2006 ?
# 9 in 2003 ?
# 3 in 2001 ? i know, Judd.
# 3 in 2000 ?
Hopefully there isn't a pattern to these answers and i realise the club were very unlucky with injuries to Kossie; 'X'- man & Maguire.
GO SAINTS!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.
