Great article and I agree wholeheartedly with Lane's conclusions.

Doc was simply that good.

A genius footballer and a truly fine, fine man.

Was a legend in Tas for many years before coming to Victoria... At 24

Could be said, he was actually at his best before even playing VFL.... And probably only played 4 years at full fitness when at StK

He had played for the state, won two league medals, been a captain coach and played well over 100 senior games before even transferring across bass strait

Liked how Lane, in one of articles, talked about how humble and welcoming Doc was, 'cos he truly was. I still remember a night in the SC, after a game in his pre-stroke coaching stint. Coming down the stairs the youngest brother, who was too young to have seen him play, and rarely made it to games, asked if the bloke near the bar was Doc. I asked if he'd like to meet him. He was reluctant, not wanting to bother the great man, so I told him not to worry, 'cos the Doc not only didn't mind, he liked a chat, particularly over a cool drink.

The bro and I spent 2 hours with Doc and Margaret, talking about every subject under the sun, from football through to politics.

Without doubt, 2 of the nicest people you would ever meet, and a great couple. I was privileged that night but, when I said so on departure, Doc and the Missus would have none of it, and thanked me and the bro for the company and the conversation.

Nice story! It's always good to hear of these people you admire being down to earth.

I was driving through Latrobe earlier in the month and wondered why they hadn't put up a statue of the great man. It's fantastic to hear that one is about to be unveiled.

Good to see Stewie involved, he has seemed reluctant to be involved with football, preferring to be overseas regularly

If we had a permanent home, we could put up a Statue for him here too

The best footballer that the Saints have ever had.

Excellent point JO!

Along with the Lockett and Mohr ends, the Robbie Muir wing (at least for Carlscum games  ) and the 'Wels Eicke memorial' scumpire changing rooms.

And not forgetting the Baldock-McNamara stand.

Thanks Bratty !
Nice read and a reminder of how great the Doc was. I can't think of a player from his era that played anything like him.
His persistance at winning the ball and holding his feet was unique.
A true legend of the game, not just our club.
I treasure his signature on the team of the century jumper I have dearly.
Proud to be a Sainter !

For me, the the Doc's playing days at St Kilda are folklore. As a kid, I was always in aw of the stories about him. I get very emotional when thinking that we were so close to winning the '09 GF with him in attendance and the prospect of him presenting us the premiership cup if we had of pulled it off. It just would have been such a fairytale for our first premiership captain to pass it on to the next.

It's fantastic that they put up a statue in his honour. I hope to see it next time I visit Tassie.

Triple Brownlow medallist Ian Stewart also paid tribute to his former team mate and hero.

"Darrel the footballer was the best player to have ever come out of Tasmania, and that's unequivocal," he said.

It's just a pity that the better player never ever won the Brownlow, but he didn't need to win the Brownlow.

Nothing from the AFL is worth noting.
Another bronze statue should be erected outside the MCG with Lee Matthews etc.

Difficult not to get a little "emo" after watching that. Quite a moving little montage tribute.
