Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
It was the day the Saints beat Port Adelaide at Football Park to win the minor premiership, Lazar Vidovic did his knee, but overshadowing all of that was the death of Princess Di. It's 17 years ago today.
Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

Pretty sure it was the Crows. Minor detail only. I think the game was quite tight also. Time flys.

It was Port, because all the talk was about them needing to win to play finals in their first season in the AFL. Watched it at the Social Club.

i was amongst the Port members cheering us on (my uncle invited me knowing i was a Port magpies supporter - he wasn't to impressed). Didn't know Di died that same day. Mind you, the saints win was a much bigger event in my life.

Nope, we played the Crows a few weeks later, without conspicuous success.8856brother wrote:Pretty sure it was the Crows. Minor detail only. I think the game was quite tight also. Time flys.

Definitely Port, and my memories of news flashes in regards to Princess Di outweigh my memory of the game. I know we won, but didn't realise it was that game that Lazar went down.8856brother wrote:Pretty sure it was the Crows. Minor detail only. I think the game was quite tight also. Time flys.

Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
The events are still surreal for me. After backpacking around the world for 5 and half months, I arrived back in Melbourne on Wed August 27 (we had left from Melbourne in March after visiting my sister there).
Remember watching the Sts/Port game in a pub in my hometown then leaking up on the Sunday to hear about Di and Dodi.
Went to Waverley the next week to watch the boys beat the Lions...and lose Spider which ended up costing us the flag.

Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
I played in a game against Coolangatta, someone mentioned at the half time break that Di had died (we really didnt need to know at that stage). We lost the game as cooly were looking to seal a top 2 spot.
So didnt get to watch the saints that day.
A month later i had to work at 5pm after that GF, was so gutted, my boss was a rugby league fan and hated Afl, he was giving me s*** about it, it was the closest i have ever came to tearing someones face off.

Where were you? News must have travelled slowly. My greatest concern on the day was that Channel 7 were going to stick with the coverage of Lady Di and not show the game live.stevie wrote:

The Crows played Essendon at Princes Park... Was there with a few mates. They announced Princess Di's death over the PA & the crowd just went totally silent.

Was driving home from Hotham with friends, listened to Mark Harvey being chaired off in his last game, was waiting for the Port/Saints game tocome on the ABC and it was delayed because some pommy Sloane Ranger got killed because the driver was pissed.
Boy was I pissed off. Missed the first 15 minutes becuase of the stupid pommy princess,, and then had to listen to the most biased commentary I think I have ever heard.
According to the radio it was amazing we won by ten goals

Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
i watched it on tv
had a major assignment due the next day at uni which i hadnt started, i was so thrilled that we finished on top of the ladder, i thought i would never experience that until that time as a st.kilda supporter i was over the moon
the lady di thing was sad but was more shocked by the port Arthur massacre which happened the previous year whilst the football was on

Yeah I reckon the Port Arthur shooting happened the same day as we played Footscray in Trevor Barker's tribute match.

did we lose Joel Smith 1 week earlier ?
I just remember that horrid run with injury Smith, Lazar, Spider, Mathew Young in what seemed like successive weeks.

With the kids at Bucanan Park Berwick listening to Ess WCE game.
Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
Yes, if I remember correctly it was the first final the following week against the Lions at Waverley. I vividly remember (where I was seated anyway) the crowd was hit hard with the injury and despite the win it was a strange mood post-match.Stephen Theodore wrote:When did we lose Everitt, first finals game ?

Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
Gosh, the things you remember...
I happened to be at a party the night before that kicked on into the wee hours on Sunday morning.
I went on to play golf that morning before collapsing in bed that afternoon. I awoke to the news that Diana had been killed - which I couldn't quite comprehend given my sleepy state - and that the Saints were about to kick-off against Port. We needed to win to secure first place.
Surreal day. Will always stick with me.

Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
We were in an Adelaide pub before heading out to the game.
When it was announced on the tv a couple of the local bogans started laughing. My girlfriend at the time almost leapt across the room and tore their horrible faces off.

Re: Remember where you where 31 August 1997?
Joel Smith we lost against Collingwood at the MCG at Round 18. He was a big loss, an incredibly smart, classy footballer who was doing amazing things on the half Forward flank that year. Richard Osborne fell on his hyper extended knee & that was the last time he ever wore a Saints jumper. Ofcourse as documented we lost Vidovic in the last game against Port & Everitt in the finals versus Brisbane & those injuries destroyed us. We still nearly pulled it off with those 3 out & the issues of Loewe and Winmar during GF week. Unbelievable.
