Draft top 5 update
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/s ... 368me.html
1. Patrick McCartin, St Kilda

In terms of how the 194-centimetre key forward has handledthe added scrutiny of being the No.1 pick, a St Kilda assistant coach said this week: "You wouldn't even know it". He certainly has a competitive edge, but there have been no signs of cockiness or the feeling that becoming a star is "just going to happen". He has been hard-working, humble and willing to listen, according to the official. As far as his character is concerned, that is the first element the Saints have ticked off. The club sees him as a natural leader, as comfortable with players 10-years-plus as he is with those in his own draft group. As long as he is fit and firing, there is no reason why Saints fans won't get a glimpse of him in the NAB Challenge. There is no underlying plan to hold him back for the regular season, either. If the club believes he can make an impact, he will play. The challenge for him, as with all other first-year players, is to adjust to the life of a professional footballer. Instead of being at school at 9am, he's at the club at 7.30am and every part of his lifestyle needs to be geared towards making the jump from schoolboy footballer to elite athlete. And, as one assistant coach put it this week, "he looks like he will do everything possible to make that transition as soon as he can". His work on the track has been hindered by just one minor set-back – a skin infection that required a minor surgical procedure and kept him out of training for a week.

ST KILDA's six first-year players and Tim Membrey were treated to 48 hours of fishing, diving and bonding on the weekend as part of the club's induction camp in South-East Tasmania.

Alan Richardson, Simon McPhee, Lindsay Gilbee, Paul Hudson, Tony Brown and Peta Searle accompanied the recently drafted players to Nick Riewoldt's property across Bass Strait.

This was the first induction camp held in Tasmania, following trips to Phillip Island in previous years.

"The last couple of days has been a great opportunity to develop relationships outside of the club setting," Player Welfare Manager Tony Brown told SAINTS.com.au.

"We've fished, cooked, laughed and talked about everything from football to music to movies. It was a greatly beneficial thing to do and I'm sure the players and coaches got a lot out of it." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Alan Richardson @AlanRichardson ·
Outstanding weekend with our new lads at the Skippers old stomping ground. Orford, Tasmania. Fishing was incredible.

Richo on his first year
http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-pre ... 7212270285
He has had numerous friends ask him, “Geez, that first season must have been tough?’’. “But if you know where you’re at, and you’ve got a really strong plan then it’s not like that,’’ he said.

“All right, at times I did get frustrated with our performance on game day, but I really enjoyed the year. I really enjoyed working with these young blokes who are really committed to improving. I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed driving and working with our leaders, who are as committed as any group I’ve seen about leaving a strong legacy.

He considers himself “incredibly lucky’’ to have come into Seaford and found an impressive support crew of coaches, recruiters, conditioning and medical staff, and also believes his own long apprenticeship meant that “I could not have been more prepared’’ to take on a senior coaching role
.

What matters now for Hickey is balancing the need to bulk up, against the understandable requirement to run out games as the team’s primary ruckman.

“I’ve been put through a good mini pre-season for the last month where they’ve really tried to get volume of running into me.”

“I ended up putting on about six kilograms in the off-season and got up to 101kgs. Obviously when I started running I began to lose a bit of that. I am sitting at the 99kg or 100kg mark at the moment, which is heavier than the weight I played at last year.

“It’s just a matter of balancing my running loads with my weights so that I can run out a full game.”

When Hickey was drafted to the Gold Coast Suns in November 2010, he weighed in at 87kgs. Now, following a succession of arduous pre-seasons and a leg program that doesn’t prioritise injury management over strength, Hickey’s objective is to match it with the biggest bodies in the AFL.

“I would love to get up to 105kgs but that probably won’t be for another couple of years,” he said.

“The short-term goal is to get up to 100kgs by round one so I’m still doing extra weights and gym at the moment.

“I feel I am a lot stronger in the gym but now I’m hoping to translate that into being stronger in games.”

Richardson singled out Ross, who played 13 senior games last year, as a player who could graduate from a fringe role and cement himself in 2015.

"With Lenny moving on, Seb will get much more opportunity where he's at his best and that is on the inside," Richardson told AFL.com.au.

"For all the understandable reasons, he hasn't quite imposed himself on games, but last year when he went back to the VFL he dominated.

"He'd made that step to being an AFL player playing in the VFL and you'd walk away from games and say, 'He's just too good for this now'.

On a personal note, the timing of the Dessau announcement was strangely symbolic where the vexed issue of football and gender was concerned. I was sitting in Seaford at the Linen House Centre with the three women who now make up almost half St Kilda's executive team when the news broke that the AFL was losing its second woman commissioner to Government House.

All three — Christine Finnegan, Emmeline McIllree and Lisa Laing — have taken ownership of the new broom at St Kilda highlighted by a Matt Finnis-driven six-month exploration of St Kilda's complex and troubled DNA by brand psychologist Anna Box.

"We all know what's been said about us [St Kilda] in the past and we plan to correct that," said McIllree. "We understand we have to face what's happened before to move forward ... we have to share our values across the club, hard-wire those values and it's not just about our objectives but our behaviours."

Added Finnegan, the Saints chief commercial officer: "We've got to take the club to the people in fresh and surprising new ways because they're not coming here."

Becoming our regular weekend AFL article
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-02-14/f ... -to-leader
"From day one, he performed," assistant coach Adam Kingsley recalled.

"Whatever the activity was, whether it was in the weights room or in the meeting room or on the training track, he made sure his performance was strong.

"If you do that, you quickly build respect amongst your teammates, irrespective whether you're at our club or any other.

"They saw the effort he put in, the results he was getting through that effort, and basically, the coaches were looking around at each other saying, 'This guy's got to be on our list, he's got to be at our footy club'."

It wasn't always like that for Weller.

During his three seasons as a Sun, he didn't always do everything he could to ensure he was in the best state to play at the highest level.

It meant he was in and out of the side, and his self-belief took a battering because of it.

It was during his last year at the club he started working with sports psychologist Mark Edmondson, who taught him the values of positive thinking.

Since then, he's used meditation and visualisation to help ensure he's done everything he can to aid his preparation.
"He's been fantastic. We put some stuff in place, a lot of goal setting and just how I carry myself," Weller said.

"His belief resonated in me and it's fully changed my thought pattern."

ST KILDA defender Nathan Wright is pushing to prove his fitness ahead of the Saints' opening NAB Challenge match as he eyes a full-time role across half-back this season.

Wright, who suffered a torn left calf one month ago, will likely miss the Saints' intra-club match this Saturday, but he is expected to be available for the first pre-season game, against the Brisbane Lions on February 28.

The 21-year-old, who has otherwise enjoyed his strongest pre-season yet, is ready to showcase a more attacking game after three years honing his shutdown traits.

"For this year, my biggest focus has been getting involved more in offence," Wright told AFL.com.au.
