63% disposal efficiency 55 clangers

Post: # 1543159Post Old Mate »

This has got to be some kind of record.

Time to prioritise skill at the selection table. Those worst offenders must not be selected.

Side note: Why do we persevere with Curren? I cringe every time he's selected.

I think we had 56 clangers last week?
These stats are pretty much the norm for us which is why we are easily the worst side in the AFL.
We will be bottom by quite some margin.
Priority pick looking good.

Curren is a battler who is not quite AFL standard. Had a job to keep Simpson quiet and did a reasonable job. As usual, the issue is that he barely gets the ball.

Shenton made some more awful decisions today and will soon be replaced by Webster

Geary has become a serious liability. He gifted Carlton at least three goals with shocking turnovers under no pressure today and had at least three kicked on him by his direct opponent. Yes he's fit, tough, courageous and a team player but he can't execute a 20m kick to a teammate under no pressure.

Obviously he's not the only offender though. Newnes has gone from being one of our better ball users to one of our worst, Savage is unreliable, Schneider's kicking has gone to s*** and Shenton is an old fashioned turnover merchant.

This side will get better. We need to have cool heads and strong nerve during this rebuilding phase. GO SAINTS! (to hell with the rest!)

63% disposal is ok for atm but the clangers are killing us.

I thought our recent draft picks were supposed to have good disposal but players like Dunstan and Billings don't appear to be up to it yet and can't get it enough anyway. Contrast that with Cripps from Carlton who has played 5 games before today with 33 disposals. Our recruiting sucks. Look at Bontempelli and Brayshaw compared to Paddy. Fair dinkum!

I'm glad after a thrashing last week we only made one change. Masterstroke stuff.

We are a lot worse than people imagine. And at this stage Billings looks like a big mistake.

We have a propensity for picking small players in the draft. They are all getting brushed off the ball way to easily. The future is bigger bodied or taller mids (like Bontempelli, Cripps, Bell, et al) and not short arsed weaklings.

Heads need to roll.
Our performance against the Pies was abysmal but we all swallowed it and handed out some excuses and brushed it under the carpet.
But now we served up this crap two weeks in a row we need to stop the denial.

Now that's a stupid post. Billings had 22 touches today, made one bad clanger and missed a leading McCartin at the start of the game but other than that his ball use was very good. Dunstan has been our best performing first/second year player for over a decade and McCartin is a 19 year old key forward who might be AFL ready in 2018. Bontempelli is a freak and was a late bolter in his draft year - an inconsistent half back who had a growth spurt and hit form late in the year. Yes, he looks like the best player out of that draft so far but Billings is showing every sign of becoming a 25-30 disposal per game, 30 goal per year midfielder. Brayshaw is a ready-made inside midfielder, though he's not performing as well as Dunstan in his first year.

Our recruiting sucked from 2003-2010. It's been pretty damn good in the past few years.

It's going to be a rough year. Plenty of thrashings to come and some real ones that require surgery to fix.

I just hope for a lot of changes regularly to give everyone a go, not sure though about Johnny Holmes yet

When I suggested Cripps looked good we had the crack pots say he was related to Jamie so was a firm no. There are plenty of s*** tall mids, the big ones stand out. Billings will be a gun eventually.

Carlton are a team that is around a 7 to 12 sort of level. We finished last. It was really a big worry having no Rooey and Montagna and then to lose Weller we were always going to be exposed. I'm calming down now and just have to remember this year is about watching guys like Lonie and Sinclair exceed our expectations. We probably would have pinched that one with those guys in.

NOBODY could ever take over Stinger's spot. "Insightful"? no, just a tongue in cheek response to your post mate.

Its a shame they dont provide missed tackles as a stat there were plenty of them also! It was a soft and sloppy effort yesterday created mostly by the senior players.

We cant afford to have so many poorly skilled or out of form players in our defence. Geary had kicked on him or created for the opposition about 8 goals yesterday. Delaney was poor, Fisher average, Savage tagged and didnt fire a shot.

Admittedly AR should have moved Savage further up the ground, that is AR's biggest shortcoming as a match day coach he is not prepared or cant think outside his pre game planning. I wonder how he would go having no set match day plans and coaching from instinct!

Billings is not looking like a mistake at all. That goal he kicked yesterday was class. Will be a super player.

Instead of looking to blame the players, could we please go back to the basics of football?

That is The Golden Rule of Football-never kick across across the front of goal in the backline.

When the team plays free flowing, moving it along and straight into the goal square (instead of via Cape Horn) the can match the best.

It's the stop and prop style of play, that leads to turn overs and playing into contested marking situations that leads to disaster.

And the classic example of that was Roberton in the last quarter couldn't find a way of getting it beyond the opposition Gialos square.

Very frustrating.......
