Goal kicking mids

Post: # 1552584Post The_Merchant »

It is something that all great sides have, and something that we have had too few of over recent seasons. We look like we are really putting together a group of mids who are capable of kicking goals. We don't really have any mids now who don't bob up and kick a few goals and we have some now who regularly kick two or three. Sinclair and lonie look like adding to the list and Acres has kicked a few in the twos. Our mids that are not getting games are also kicking goals for Sandy.

I had in that post, 'even Weller is capable of kicking a few', but took it out. Within five minutes he had kicked two. Wouldn't I have looked clever, oh well.

I think today Dunny can step up kicking goals because Billings played more of a link up role for the game. That's the advantage of rounding players games out so that they can do both inside and outside, can run and link up but also win contested ball. I think that's what Richo is working towards. Its makes you so much less one dimensional. Armo has added some nice spread to his game. Billings and Steven are working hard on winning contested ball. Weller does a tag but also tries to be a weapon forward to keep his player honest. The more versatile and flexible players are the harder a team is to stop as a whole.

I think starting roo up the ground helps, gets them taking the best option even if that be the goals early

Dunstan is an interesting one.

For a second year player he already looks a lock as a ball winning mid.

The difference between him being a decent player ala Luke Ball post injury or an elite player closer to a Dangerfield model may well be if he can develop his outside game.

At the moment, i think he's doing well

Good call. Goals this year:

Sinclair: 1.00 per game, 9 in 9 games playing mainly on a HFF
Billings: 0.88 per game, 7 in 8 games playing on a HFF and through the middle
Lonie: 0.88 per game, 7 in 8 games playing mainly in a FP, little bit higher up the ground
Armitage: 0.78 per game, 7 in 9 games playing in the guts
Dunstan: 0.78 per game, 7 in 9 games playing in the guts
Schneider: 0.75 per game, 6 in 8 games playing through the middle
Steven: 0.56 per game, 5 in 9 games playing through the middle
Savage: 0.50 per game, 4 in 8 games playing mainly from a HBF
Weller: 0.50 per game, 4 in 8 games playing as a tagger
Roberton: 0.44 per game, 4 in 9 games playing mainly from the backline
Newnes: 0.22 per game, 2 in 9 games playing through the middle and half-back

If you can get more than 1 every two games from five or six mids then you're doing very well, that's 60+ goals a year in total.
