Neil just loves the club

Great natural talent in a very poor side. Always knew where the ball was going and had strong hands in the air.

A Brownlow says a lot.

Great long term Club man too.

When Roberts did retire at age 29 after the 1962 season, having played 169 games over 11 years, he had helped bring St Kilda to the cusp of its greatest era: Over the next 11 seasons they would play in eight finals series, three Grand Finals and win the club’s maiden premiership.

Universally known as “Coco’’ (a trainer once observed that his crew cut made his head look like a shaven coconut, and the nickname stuck) Roberts has never been defined by football alone.

Post-football he would become a school principal and in 1971 was chosen from the thousands of applicants to lead an expedition to Antarctica.

He had been inspired to do so by Saints wingman Brian Woinarski, a strong character an Australian party to Mawson Base in the late 1950s: “When he came back he was shattered and I thought ‘by gosh I’m going to have a taste of this’.’’

Met him at Etihad in the toilets in 2003. Both of us were pissed but Coco was impeccably dressed and suave. Told him how I loved watching World Of Sport religiously as a kid.
