Re: Goal of the Year
I am sorry - it has since been pointed out to me by my walking St Kilda encyclopedia- Jack did win the Round 18 GOTW - Outrage doubling - Rage enveloping - Mist descending!

In hindsight it wasn't that good for goal of the year status

Re: Goal of the Year
One of the many unique features of Aussie Footy, you don't have to be fully on the playing area to have a legal disposal, a leg will do. Also an (illegal at first glance) disposal now has a time criteria, if the likkle Tiger was bundled over before the foot touched the ball it was a throw, so between leaving his hand in a throwing action and the next contact with the ball there was a twilight zone of infringement/play on. The theory of relativity could possibly explain that clearly to me. Similarly holding the ball rule: there is a moment when the outcome of a legal tackle after a player has had prior opportunity depends on whether the ball drop happens to touch the tackled players boot or not. The free kick does not apply the moment the tackled player clearly loses control e.g. as knock on in Rugby/League would be adjudicated. The uncertainty of our game is marvellous.

Re: Goal of the Year
In 10 years from now they'll have snicko embedded in a chip inside everyones boots and also there'll be some sort of advanced heat sensor to work out whether a fingernail has touched the footy when someone goes for a smother. No need for the knob who sits there adjudicating the goal review. Technology will work it all out...but I suppose a human will still need to press the button so some uncertainty will remain

Re: Goal of the Year
Very clever but it was a throw. IMHO, that is. Obviously the AFL doesn't agree with me.

Re: Goal of the Year
Goal of the year is never for the hardest goal kicked, but the flashiest, which that probably was.
Those saying it’s a throw is just a bunch of sour grapes too.

Re: Goal of the Year
Then what is your take on how the ball managed to leave his hand?
Give me one flag & I'll go to my grave a happy man.

Re: Goal of the Year
The ball is in his hand & then moves upwards after it leaves his hand
Clearly a throw
Clearly a free kick for a throw
If not clear enough for you, read about gravity

Re: Goal of the Year
Players throw the ball on to their boot all the time, so much that it’s literally a saying. Players on the ground do it all the time and no one says boo.
Great goal by Higgins
I’m sure all you sooky old-timers were crying there should have been a free kick paid at the 59 min mark of this video

Re: Goal of the Year
AFL over reacts to grumpy ole uproar
now EVERYTIME a player does a running bounce the umpires now have to call it throwing the ball

Re: Goal of the Year
Another great point.
I look forward to the logic somersault the baby-boomer-brigade will perform to explain how a running bounce doesn’t involve throwing the ball
“It’s not a throw, more of a forceful drop...”

Re: Goal of the Year
Different situation. Being on the ground and throwing it on your boot has always been part of the game, but throwing the ball in the air, going into the crowd and buying a beer and then coming back to kick it is not.The_Dud wrote: ↑Tue 25 Sep 2018 7:38pm Players throw the ball on to their boot all the time, so much that it’s literally a saying. Re: Goal of the Year
Of course as usual with AFL grumpy ole uproar over reaction rules they have to bring in a special Auskick Junior football exemption rule
Because it's pointed out to them every kid that kicks the ball flings it in the air to get the timing right
