How do we stop Thomas, Shaw and Maxwell

Post: # 1003044Post samoht »

We did a great job with stopping their midfield.

How do we know shut down their rebound from half back - which was their strength ?

Any suggestions ?

I'm logging off now for the day .. hopefully there will be some responses.

I dont think we can stop everyone. I will be happy if we stop the mids again and the 3 you mentioned still play well. To me Swan, Pendles and Didak are much more dangerous than the other 3 even though they are very good players.

Go one on one and back six of our defenders to do the same job seven did last week?

I really liked the Gilbo move fwd. Dal fwd is another possibility, but Gilbo is such a good physical match up.

Seriously I reckon if you make Maxwell take a man, you really screw their structure.

The others often feed of his spoils.

Or you throw Stanley in the deepest end ever??

As RL says - 200cms and super quick.... Even if he does nothing but chase, he otherwise simply has to be watched...

Just thoughts...

A lot depends on Dal and Gram's fitness.
If they are even close to full fitness the Filth will ahve a real problem.

ALl of a sudden they are confronted by a midfield that got on top of them last week but has now been bolstered with an AA and an almost Norm Smith Medallist.

If either can spend quality time in teh middle then that frees up other mids.

Does anybody think Maxwell would be zoning off if he's got to mind BJ or a more fit Dal on a half forward flank for a while?

I'd send Ray to Thomas and tell him to follow him wherever he goes. Farren is good enough to match/beat him in the air as well as quick enough to keep up with him on the ground.

CJ goes to Swan - Swanhad 12 disposals on him in the first half, when they were their most dominating.

Dempster again goes to Didak.

Let the Filth decide if they want to pit Pendles head to head with Lenny again?

Interestingly, Ball was almost irrelevant last week (did he swap with Pendlebury?)

I actually like this idea, could start on the bench, have Kosi rotating in the ruck and have Rhys Lightning darting around the 50 presenting making a tall defender accountable. Could just be a smokey for selection.......maybe

Probably make Roo stand around the true CHF position and kick straight to him and keep it low, not stupid big bombs and definately not out on the flanks. I think keeping in the corridor as much as possible puts the Woods under pressure

Need some mobility in the F50, so they aren't scooping up the spills once it hits the deck, and running it out of there....I really liked Gilbert forward for this reason.

Call Didak's mates round to his house with a couple of dozen slabs, a hsv ute and a couple of melbourne underworld identities. You wouldn't see them for a week.

Yep i'd definitely be content if we limited Swan and Pendlebury again. Cannot fathom how crucial these two are for the Pies.

Thomas: plan A, take him out a mirror. plan B, tell him there are no cameras at the ground. plan C, play Peake on him.

Maxwell: plan A, rotate Dal, BJ and Gilbo through HF. plan B, select Rhys plan C, kick the ball on top of him with Kosi charging out

Shaw: plan A, Farren Ray. plan B, select Miles. plan C, remind him the G is surrounded by Booze Buses.

maxwell?
just make him a accountable
all he kept doing last week was calling blokes back when someone went down their to make him accountable

shaw?
he's the most dangerous imo
someone should run with him and then get HIM chasing tail

thomas?
dunno

Shaw won't be chasing anytime soon. Hasn't done it for 22 weeks, why would he start now?

i wonder if Ball will play more then 68% of the game. and if he is more injured then last week, then maybe not.

doubt that we will tag him though

18 scores from 35 inside 50s. Fisher and Gwilt rebounded more than Collingwood did.

Didak & Pendels are injured, though they will play their output will be restricted. One more hip & shoulder from Zac & Didak will be out.

some good responses -

True, Fisher and Gwilt rebounded more from inside 50 - as the rebound stats are only measured from inside 50 - but I reckon a rebound is still a rebound.

Their 3 players - Shaw, Thomas and Maxwell had 70 possessions and provided plenty of dash and cleared the ball away from our forward line/rebounded it strongly - so we need to combat that.

Maybe 20 of their 62 inside 50's started from Shaw, Thomas and Maxwell... we can't give them the same leeway.
Malthouse mentioned after the game Fisher and Gwilt - so stopping our rebound must be uppermost on their minds .

We need to likewise target their strength from the game - their Half Back line.

In my opinion, Maxwell was really important to them as a third man up against Roo. When Goddard moves to our forward line, it was really hard for them to double tag both him and Roo... and when we got it forward fast, their backline really struggled. I just hope we are able to move it forward fast again.

I think we looked so good in the second half. Reducing their scoring ability so much, it reminded me of the Geelong game where they didn't score in the second half. Suggested to me that we'd worked them out.

It became, for me, more about the game plan (as much as I hate to say it) than about individuals (particularly on their side) ... though Goddard's spectacular efforts when it mattered really did make a difference.
