When can we go it alone????

Post: # 1235892Post ShakenNotStirred »

I'm talking about as a standalone VFL side. I know this topic has been done to death but thought I would raise it again at a time when some of us r talking about a rebuild.

We only have to have a look at those sides who have a standalone VFL side to see where the success lays.

Admittedly this year the interstate sides have somewhat dominated but I'm still of the belief that being merged with Sandy stifles the development of our kids.

Sing it loud and sing it proud but most of all hang around for this club will rise to claim the prize and then we will realise its not such a surprise. :-)

do you have access to a recurring $190,000 for every year?

as pointed out by an article recently and in relation to another club
there is roughly a saving of $135,000 per year by remaining in an alignement.

some clubs- Hawthorn_ have managed to remain aligned- just but have dissenfranchised their supporters.

although many have pi55ed of their affiliates supporters-
at this point the Saints and Sandy are treading a fine line- which has widened this year thanks to Pelche, McPhee< Hudson and co after being drawn very very thin last yeat- in keeping the majority of Both clubs happy.

and yes subjest Just like the BJ subject has been done to ... exhaustion.

I remember reading that the AFL had said no to further teams going alone in the Afl, seems a little unfair that the Fth and the pussies are allowed such an advantage. The article was about the Saints enquiring about a stand alone side. I think it was late last year or pre- season. Stinks IMO

I may be wrong with my timing ( it was July 2011)
The AFL drew a monotorium tying clubs to their affiliated clubs around this time. We have to stay with Sandy until the end of 2013 lime it or not. They also increased the costs of the licence by about $150,000 per year to try to discourage clubs from going alone before this date. They did everything they could to discourage more teams going it alone. I am sure I heard Dimwitt on the radio saying that more alignments would hurt the VFL too much
Personally I like the current alignment

Here is a snippet

Deadline looms for VFL team decisions
Caroline Wilson July 28, 2011
ESSENDON will move to sever its relationship with the Bendigo Bombers at the end of this season with coach James Hird having lobbied heavily to the club's board for a stand-alone VFL team.
With the deadline just days away for Victorian clubs to state their intentions regarding the contentious issue of VFL alignments, The Age understands the AFL has worked to discourage clubs from abandoning their VFL teams and will place a hefty price on the establishment of stand-alone teams.
However, Essendon, which has also launched a campaign to raise $30 million for its new Tullamarine headquarters, remains convinced that its on-field fortunes will receive a significant fillip by moving to the model successfully adopted by Geelong and Collingwood - winners of three of the past four premierships.

The AFL clubs have until Sunday to put forward their submissions to AFL Victoria and have been told that, once finalised, all VFL alignments must remain in place until the end of 2014.
In a series of developments The Age understands:
■ St Kilda coach Ross Lyon, who has been pushing to split with Sandringham in favour of a Saints reserves team, appears to have been thwarted with the club's existing agreement with Sandringham in place until the end of 2013.
■Carlton is negotiating with its VFL-aligned club the Northern Bullants to change its name to the Northern Blues and its club colours to navy and white from next season with the VFL team's jumper expected to closely resemble that of Carlton's.
■Melbourne, despite falling out with Casey over the Brendan Fevola debacle at the start of this season, has been persuaded to continue its cautious alignment.
■Richmond has unofficially chosen to make the redevelopment of Punt Road its priority, pushing back any plans for a stand-alone VFL team for three years.
Hird has been strongly backed by his senior assistant Mark Thompson in pushing for a Bombers reserves team to play at Windy Hill next season. Although the club appoints the coach (currently Shannon Grant) and has a major influence in the running of the Bendigo side, the Bombers' football department remains frustrated at the distance between Windy Hill and Bendigo.
As the recently restructured AFL Victoria moves to formulate a long-
term plan for the perilous state of much of football's heartland, the state's chief, Peter Jackson, and Grant Williams have instructed clubs to complete their plans by Sunday, warning them that stand-alone VFL teams will become increasingly expensive to run as they help fund existing VFL teams.
The clubs have been told they must stick with whatever decision they reach for the next three seasons for the sake of VFL stability.
AFL Victoria is expected to significantly increase the annual licence fee - currently about $130,000 - meaning clubs looking to move to a stand-alone team could be faced with an annual bill increase of at least $100,000. The estimated cost of funding a stand-alone team this season is $500,000.
While the AFL has poured millions of dollars into the establishment of club-aligned AFL academies in New South Wales and Queensland, Victoria - the traditional home of the game - has no such centres of excellence, which AFL Victoria remains hopeful of establishing with much-needed funding from the broadcast rights pool.
The three-year moratorium on the new VFL structure, to be established for the 2012 season, means the Saints' uneasy relationship with Sandringham must remain in place.
St Kilda has no facilities to establish a stand-alone team in time for next season despite Moorabbin's excellent ground because the club pulled down all change room and other facilities. The small size of Sandringham's home ground is one of a number of frustrations for coach Lyon and his team.
Hawthorn has made no move to change its flourishing and formalised relationship with the Box Hill Hawks while Melbourne is working to radically rework its partnership with Casey.
''Our frustrations have been very public with the Brendan Fevola situation,'' said the Demons football boss Chris Connolly, ''and we've been working very closely with AFL Victoria and Casey to ensure the best outcome for everyone.
''We have to improve the relationship.''

Essendon are entering a stand alone team next year.

it is why Bendigo are now known as the Bendigo Gold rather than Bendigo Bombers.

And more importantly Aussie Jones is the new Bendigo team's coach!

Agree we need to find a way to have our own stand alone team.

It could and should be based at Moorabbin where we have a merchandise shop.

I'd like to think our Social Club volunteers could leverage off a reserves team to generate some cash.

Which part? Supersaints' post or the article itself?
Because after telling off everyone that posts without knowing the facts, you certainly wouldn't be guilty of that same offence, would you?

Back on topic...
I don't believe that it is a coincidence that four of the last five premiers have had their own VFL side.
It will be interesting to see our relationship with Sandy after a few seasons...The stories that went around when Lyon took over from Thomas regarding Casey were similar to the stories that I am reading about now with Watters and Sandy. Until St Kilda is in a position where it dictates total direction to a VFL team then it will always be behind Collingwood, Geelong and, shortly, Essendon (who will have their own team next season).

Well Essendon have their own side next year. We had a chance last year to apply to have our own side. We didnt. We now have to wait till 2015 but we can then have our own side if we apply. lets face it we wont. We dont have the money or we would have done it last year. Im glad you got me to explain. It is good to pass off my vast knowledge. it can only help the forum.
