"unless a rival can come up with an "extraordinary" offer.

The Saints first pick stands at No.3, the club's first inside the top five since 2002.

And, St Kilda head of football Chris Pelchen today warned clubs off the prized selection.

"While we remain open-minded to trading in the 2013 AFL Trade Period, our pick three draft selection is off limits unless we received an extraordinary deal," Pelchen told the club's website."

The Herald Sun reported two weeks ago that Bruce was keen on a move to St Kilda.

Totally agree. Pick 3 should only be a consideration should some super come along. ANd I cannot think of any rumoured trade targets that would qualify in the super category. Strong stance. Correct stance.

Yes but once upon a time we gave up Pick 6 for Barry Brooks. Even common sense needs to be reinforced sometimes!!

In regards to Luke Delaney I prefer this comment:

“We’ve had some level of discussion with Luke’s management as he remains a player of some interest to us,” Pelchen said.

...to previous media speculation re us offering him a 3 year contract.

I won't be too upset if this speculated trade doesn't come to fruition.

In fact this has to be diversionary because if pelican is as ruthless and shrewd as we are said to believe he certainly would not be revealing his cards
Therefore
Bruce we want but may not get
Delaney we will likely get
Pick 3 is likely to be traded

I saw it the complete opposite. I thought it was a strong statement to let EVERY club in the comp (and their media buddies) know that we are NOT the pushovers that we are being portrayed to be this year. I'd even go as far as to suggest that we have had some "Pretty Ordinary" offers already !!

To me it sounds like they are offering up pick three if something good comes along. I would say they are in the mood to offer just about anyone and anything up for the right deal.

If johnny Patton and Bruce etc. where on offer I think they would do the deal that means. then trade Dal up or something. A deal won't get done but it is def available for the right deal.

Bernie Vince and Rory Sloan or something similar would get it done too I think.

Rory Sloane on his own would get it done for sure. if anything pick 3 isnt enough.

I would offer pick 3 and a player to GWS for Paton and pick 9. I have been making this offer for at least 3 months, and GWS have ignored me.

Yep, I reckon most of the footy public reckons we 'lost' on our trades for picks 12 & 13 last year, so would not surprise if some clubs offer up some ordinary 2 for 1 deals to try and prize out pick 3.

Same here bb. You would think our combined pressure would have made GWS cave by now

Keep pick 3 I reckon. Let's build a new core for the team from the ground up from the draft. Next year we should get a similar pick and provided we make wise selections that's 2 elite players right there.

Patton has got the talent no question. But his body is letting him down. Kozzie #2 in the future it looks like.

Was it not also a top ten for Fergus Watts? Or am I getting wires crossed?

Patton couldn't play in his first year because he had tendonitis like a young Rooey. Rhys Stanley tackled him and pulled him down and did his knee. That doesn't sound like injury prone just unlucky and tendonitis is pretty common in huge kids.

I think Richmond had pick 9 from memory which they got Vlastuin who is probably one of the best 5 players drafted last year. Brody Grundy wasn't even in the top 10, Olly Wines was pick 7, Chad Wingard was 6 the year before while guys like Tambling and Thorp were in the top 5. As long as you get the picks inside the top 10 and use them well you can still get super talent.

I never said he wasn't a good bloke, just never lived up to his full potential because his body let him down.

Yep. We traded pick 17, which was our first rounder, to Adelaide for Watts. They used it on Darren Pfeifer who was subsequently dumped by the Crows and re-drafted by Port in the 2011 rookie draft. Played zero games last year. There's some useful information for you.
Our first pick in that year Gilbo at #33. We also chose Rix, Phillip Raymond and Justin Sweeney.
