Our recruiting from 2000 onwards. The year a player has been elevated from the rookie list is when I include them as recruited. I don’t include Rookies in the stats until they are elevated. I have a detailed spreadsheet of who the players are, how many games they played and how we got them(trade, Draft, Pre season draft, Elevated rookie) 2009 was probably our worst, 8 player recruited, 0 still on the list with only 1 50+ player.

Looking over the period as a whole, I don't think we have done all that badly. There's not much point in moaning about 2004-06 or 2008-10: all years in which we finished in the 8 and - except in 2006 - made it through to at least the second last weekend, so of course we weren't going to have great draft picks to play with.

We've had so many posts on SS over the past 7-8 years whinging about our appalling recruiting - especially in 2004-06 and, to a lesser extent, 2008-10. Both GT and Ross Lyon have been accused at various times of "ruining our list". But, in reality, we had an extremely good list between 2003 and 2011. Given a bit of better luck with injuries and the bounce of the ball, we might have won four or more premierships over that period.

There is such a futile culture of blaming the coach and players on this site: which is why I've deliberately kept away since Watters's sacking. Watters, too, tried to do his best for the club. It appears that he wasn't good enough. That's a shame.

If we want to be critical on here about what's been happening since 2010, I think the appropriate targets would be the former President, the board and the former CEO.

But how about instead of this we start looking to the future. You never know, it might turn out to be ok.

Just thought people might be interested as I compiled the list for myself. I was surprised with the recruiting of 2007 better than I thought. I think what we recruited 2011 and 2012, seem like a reasonable bunch, given the compromised drafts. I am looking forward to the next 2 drafts and what talent we can recruit. It is difficult to compare against others and would take me ages. I post to create discussion isn't that what the forum is for? I don't think anyone has compaired out recruiting over a 10 year period nd thought people might be interested. I think you you get over 100 games from a player that is good, over 200 is great and over 250 brilliant.

What would be more interesting would be a comparison of all the spending budgets of recruiting departments throughout the league.

Of those 'lost years' you would most likely see St Kilda's recruiting department in the bottom 2 or 3.

It's all good & well potting the likes of Bevo & Peake (& to a lesser extent Thomas & Lyon) when they were operating on a chicken feed budget compared to the much 'stroked' likes of Geelong, Collingwood & Sydney.

Give Bevo/Peake/Trout the recruiting budget & network that Stephen Wells enjoys & you'd see a different result in our recruiting 'hit' percentage.
