As odd as it may sound, if we are getting O'Shea, that may make Stanley dispensable. It would allow Bruce to play forward, where he showed more in a couple of quarters than Stanley did in a couple of seasons. With White and Lee in the seconds and expected to show something this year, I think Stanley is tradeable on exposed form. I agree his "potential" is tantalising, but eventually you have to "s*** or get off the pot" as the crude old saying goes.

At what point do you cut your losses and admit that the flashes of brilliance are as much as you will ever get from the player? Stanley has had 5 or 6 years, and whilst his ability to go into the ruck and play key forward is valuable, I think that in the medium to longer term we will be able to cover that adequately. Short term we are going to struggle anyway, and Rhys is not going to be the difference to whetheh we suck next year or not.

Agreed.

My reading would be this

If we trade Stanley for #21

We trade #1 for #4 and #7 from GWS

That gives us 4,7,21,22

1 - GWS - Petracca
2 - Melb - Brayshaw
3 - Melb - McCartin/Wright
4 - Stk - McCartin/Wright

7 - mid

21 -tall slider
22- mid slider

Pick 47 in 08.
6 Seasons. 40 career goals.

How good should he always have been?

Ok so let's say wright gets taken at 3.
McCartin ain't a ruck and none of our other rucks can play forward.

Seriously not liking it.

Trade Longer. Oh that's right no one would want him.

Stanley could embarrass is if he goes.

Sure if he was 25 or older piss him off, but gee, pick 21 doesn't inspire

I would hope not , years of developing him to let another club take him and benefit while we get a maybe at 21. Look at game v Freo that is a glimpse of what he can do , yes inconsistent but has only played just over 50 games. Would be crazy to take 21 IMO.

Longer was wanted by two clubs - the one that drafted him and the one that traded for him.

As well as that Longer is 21, a baby as a ruck man.

Hickey kicked three goals in a game last season, so he CAN play up forward.

And who said Wright cant play ruck. How much have you seen of him?

What is his vertical leap?

Who said we were after McCartin?

Who says he cant develop?

Glimpse is the most important word here.

1 game in 60 and he is suddenly a world beater.

Most players only start to show what they are capable of after 50 games in the big league... Not to mention the bigger types. Pick 14 or walk away.

Yep Id be happy with 14.
21 doesnt seem enough. By comparison Hampson went at 28 last year. Rhys is a lot better than Hampson.

I have to agree. Would be very disappointed to see him go.

did Billy run over your dog or something ??

all this talk about our rucks not being able to play forward blah blah blah Rhys could barely play forward given the delivery we had coming in .. it took Roo playing out of his skin to be an effective forward with our forward entrys so lets not be too hastey to say our rucks cant play forward ... big picture stuff we are just going through the motions to build the list the next 3 years so making sure we have every base covered is not as important as it would be if we are contending ..

as i said before a blue chip midfield makes an average forward line look awesome so that should be our priority

as for the theory that if we let him go he will come good and we will be kicking ourselves well honestly as a wooden spoon club who tried for 6 years to get him to come good you can say we gave it our best shot so if he leaves and comes good then good luck to him

Geelong must see him as a 3rd banana fwd/ruck.
They already have the Tomahawk and Mitch Clark.

Great twist of words - world beater! No, but better than pick 21 - 14 would consider it and has played a few more than 1 serviceable game. Big guys take time, especially those who are naturally athletes not footballers. 6'8 athletes who cover the ground , can kick and play multiple positions don't grow on trees , even if he has limitations.

Not saying we were, but what if that was our thinking and he goes at 3?
Wright can ruck
Longer can't mark
Hickey could go forward, but no point if back up can't ruck or play forward.

I get a feeling Pelchen loves Hickey.
We really need Hickey to not be injured.

How many ruckman do Geelong need? They will have Clarke, Vardy, McIntosh, Simpson, the hurdler (name?) and now Stanley. Seems way too many talls?

Would like to see Stanley stay, however I understand the clubs plan. We need to get more than GOP's through the door.

Pain last year was Mac leaving, Dal leaving. year before bj leaving.

We need to trade whatever currency we have. Unfortunately Rhys has currency.

My thinking if GWS want #1

GWS #1 - Petracca
Melb - #2 - Brayshaw
melb #3 - Wright/McCartin
Stk #4 - Wright/McCartin.

We get a tall regardless.

Longer can learn to mark, he is 21 after all

Wright may be able to ruck, who do you know.

Hickey can ruck and Mark and go forward.

2015 Holmes will be pushing for selection - can mark, can ruck, can kick.

Surprised given that they already have Clark.

They have also over recent years completely changed their staregy with the recruitment of recycled players.

We're they once proud that their team was all home grown?

I guess it's hard for the club to have an athletic 200cm player who isn't really a power forward or a power ruckman, but dabbles a bit in both without huge impact. I think we're a OK with rucks and we really need a consistent strong key forward, and Stanley is not that, so maybe that's where this is coming from, and probably pick 21 is flattering Stanley so we should grab it and look for midfielders and forwards.

Would be good to get Taylor Hunt included for #21 or give them #22 for #14 and Stanley. I wonder if Melbourne want too much for Clarke and this is Geelong way of putting pressure on them ?

Looking ahead I beleive now we will trade #1 for #4 & #7 then select Wright or Durdin at #4.

Plus we also have Lewis Pierce. Still only 19.
Recruited as a late birther. Equivalent to a second year player.

i would hope pierce can play forward. or either of longer / hickey are able to play 100% ruck.

maybe this signals the intention to draft wright after all, following a 1 for 4 & 6/7 trade - if he's gone by pick 3 we take mids or a fwd and sort it out later, it's not like we are going to miss finals because of this.
