Saints biggest wins

Post: # 1561907Post bergholt »

As perfectionist posted, that was our fifth biggest win ever.

We've been lucky/unlucky that most of our biggest wins have come in the last 25 years. I reckon that means we collectively should remember them pretty well, any memories of these?

R22, 2005: 139 points over Brisbane at Docklands (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/20 ... 50827.html)
- Milney kicked 11 straight, it was a pretty fun day out

R7, 1991: 131 points over Adelaide at Moorabbin (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/19 ... 10504.html)
- I don't remember this one, apparently Plugger kicked 12

R22, 2012: 128 points over GWS at Docklands (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/20 ... 20825.html)
- only a couple of years ago but personally I don't remember it at all

R23, 1991: 120 points over Brisbane at Moorabbin (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/19 ... 10824.html)
- another one from 1991 that I don't remember, Loewey kicked a bag

R14, 2015: 110 points over Essendon at Docklands

R2, 1970: 110 points over Fitzroy at the Junction (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/19 ... 00411.html)
- definitely before my time, 4 each for Breen and two Pascoes

R2, 1950: 109 points over Hawthorn at the Junction (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/19 ... 00429.html)
- well before most of our times, Peter Bennett kicked 8 and Jim Ross 6

R22, 2008: 108 points over Essendon at Docklands (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/20 ... 80831.html)
- big win to get us into the finals, Milney kicked 7 but BJ was best on ground (ironically)

R10, 2004: 108 points over Carlton at Docklands (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/20 ... 40530.html)
- huge win to close out our 10 game winning streak, 9 goals for the G-Train, Hayes and Dal both great - big memories of this

R10, 1992: 108 points over Brisbane at Moorabbin (http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/19 ... 20523.html)
- just the lazy 12 for Plugger, another I don't really remember

The 1991 one was fantastic. Plugger hurt his back in the practice game and it was his first game back. Totally unfit and fat. Kicked 9 by half time and poor Danny Hughes got dragged straight in front of the animal enclosure. Pluggers first 3 games that year were impossible to believe considering how unfit he was.

I don't know how old you are Bergholt but that game against the Crows was one of the great victories of all time.

The writing was on the wall in the 20 seconds. Vidovic down to Harvey who put it on Lockett's chest.

The 2008 Essendon game got us the double chance, we had top 8 sown up.

Didn't we have a big win over Sydney at the SCG in 1998? I thought we won by 101 points or something? The players all linked arms & formed a huge line up after the game.

I was probably there because we went to all the home games that year, I just don't remember it. Another relic of a misspent youth.

Dirty kicked 6 that night. Those were the days the players went out after the game. It was a big night.

Yeah I was at that game, I can't remember what year but around that time or the final score but it was a big win. I ended up getting drunk with a bunch of players that night. Everett and Sziller were very big drinkers. It wasn't the most professional recovery in those days.

100+ point win over North 2010 was special too. CJ's best game for the club. Kept Brent Harvey to 0 possessions.

As Bergholt said - most of our biggest wins have come since 1991 when Kenny Sheldon brought a bit of professionalism to Moorabbin.
Before 1991 we had only won 3 games by 100 points + - now 16, plus a lot of games by over 90 points in the past decade.
Before 1991 we had only kicked 160points + 3 times - now 17 times, plus a heap of scores of over 150 points in that time.

The club have been so much better to barrack for since 1997 or thereabouts.

Fond memories of those games in the early 90s at Moorabbin...when Adelaide and Sydney were bunny sides.
You could walk into the ground knowing that if Plugger was fit and playing that a 10-goal victory was on the cards.

We smashed Carlton for nearly a decade at the dome starting in the Thomas era after they got nailed for cheating.

I was at:

R22, 2005: 139 points over Brisbane at Docklands - I was there as part of a mate's bucks. He was a Fitzroy fan, so not too happy. Milne was on fire and could not miss. Darryl White played his last game.

R7, 1991: 131 points over Adelaide at Moorabbin - this is in my top 5 games. Winmar returned too. I remember Plugger shaking the ball in front of Rodney Maynard after taking another mark. Brilliant day.

R22, 2012: 128 points over GWS at Docklands - I think I'd need to see a video to remember this one!
- only a couple of years ago but personally I don't remember it at all

R22, 2008: 108 points over Essendon at Docklands - it was pretty hilarious to need a 100 point win and get it. Happy times.

R10, 2004: 108 points over Carlton at Docklands - Pagan put Fev at full back for a while to teach him a lesson. Great win, but I remember being annoyed at the way we didn't really stick the boot in in the last quarter!

Saw all but the 1950 and 1970 wins.

All sweet.

Crows was brutal with Lockett running amok, and not just goals.

In 2008 I had pre-calculated the % required, ever the optimist!

This weekend was the most complete team though. Was like a machine.

There was nothing memorable about the 2012 win over GWS really. They were getting flogged weekly and we just continued it.

The only exciting thing was the fact we were up 108-15 at half time after booting 10 goals to none in the second quarter. If we had have gone on with it we definitely would have broken a few more records. Unfortunately we managed just 2.1.13 to 1.2.8 in the third. And ended up 'only' winning by 128.

IIRC, it was Seb's first game!

How about the Adelaide game at the Docklands 2011 - we won by 103 points, they only kicked 2 goals, and Craig was sacked as coach the next day.

Didn't quite make the list, I only had the top 10. Pretty memorable one though, you're right. Milney's 8.2 was a dominant performance, him and Schneids combined for 13 goals.

Small forwards kicking goals reminds me of the game against West Coast in Round 9, 2004 where we won by 101. Guerra kicked 7 straight and Milne 4. Not to mention 5 for the G-Train and 4 for Sammy. That was an unbelievably fun couple of months of footy.

That 2012 win over GWS was the game we should have smashed the 2005 record, and possibly a few more in the wider competition. We kicked only 2.1 in the third quarter and a wayward 6.6 in the last, and against probably the weakest team we'll ever play against given their circumstances.
St Kilda 7.2.44, 17.6.108, 19.7.121, 25.13.163
GWS 2.1.13, 2.3.15, 3.5.23, 5.5.35

Siposs 24 touches, 10 marks and 1 goal; Tom Ledger 21 touches and 1 goal, Milera 14 touches and 3 goals, Stanley 7 marks and 1.3, Dempster topped our disposals with 29, Geary had 27. And we had no Riewoldt. One of those days. Could so easily have been around the 160-point mark.

It was the game we wore the Members Thank You/Newspaper jumper:

Yep, huge win in Round 10. Sziller with 6 as mentioned and Sierakowski with 3 himself. Lockett actually kicked 4 at the other end. The players linking arms after the game though and singing the song was was the Round 19 win from the year before - probably the first time that season we genuinely looked like we were heading for something huge. Down by 30 points during the third quarter but stormed home with Lappin kicking the sealer from the pocket. Broke Sydney's streak of 20 straight wins at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFOLMS2Odrw

And it is just so wonderful that two of our top ten wins have been against the injectors . . . smashing the smug pricks . . . we owe them so much more.

And they shalt receive in abundance!

Interestingly, 8 of those floggings have occurred over only the last 25 seasons.

In the last 25 years:
Our greatest victories against the other 10 remaining traditional sides are thus;
Top 6 Greatest Winning Margins against Carlton and 10 highest ever scores.
Top 2 GWMs against Collingwood.
Top 3 GWMs against Essendon and our highest ever score.
Highest ever score against Geelong
Top 4 GWMs against Melbourne
Highest GWM against North Melbourne
GWM against Richmond and our highest ever score
Top 2 GWMs against Sydney Swans and 5 highest ever scores

Add to this that we have also enjoyed massive victories and extremely high scoring against our interstate rivals as well in this time and it's clear to be seen that it's been a great time to barrack for the Saints since 1997.

Only the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn have been safe from the record breaking Saints in this time.
