Accuracy

Post: # 1569700Post Beno88 »

It appears as though our accuracy, or inaccuracy, in front of goal is becoming a serious issue.

Obviously our kicking all over the field has been poor, but failing to convert is hurting us more than anything.

Poor kicking in front of goal has arguably cost us four games this year (GWS, Essendon, Bulldogs, Richmond).

This seems as though it's been an ongoing issue for us in recent years. In 2013 the league accuracy average was 53.1%, we were at 50.6%. In 2014, the league average was 58.5%, we were at 50.6%.

This year the league average is 54.7%. We are at 51.5%.

But it's when we lose that it's more alarming.

Our last four losses have seen us kick 29.53! Accuracy of just over 40%. In those games, our opposition has averaged only 2.5 more scoring shots per game but are kicking 5.5 more goals.

I'd like to think this can be improved before poor conversion starts costing us games when it matters.

Bad kicking is bad football is the old saying.

It would be interesting to compare the accuracy of the top 8 versus the bottom 8. Compare their forward entries, to scoring shots and then accuracy.

More time needs to be put into goalkicking in my view, particularly from 30m out directly in front. How professional footballers can miss those is beyond me.

Statistics can be missleading.

What does 51.5% actually mean? Does it simply mean that 51.5% of our scores are goals, and 48.5% of our scores are points?

Hitting the post from 65% metres is not innacurate, but statistically it may appear that way.

If our forwards would stay in the goal square, and lead and mark (like Plugger did) 30 metres directly in front of goal, I'll bet our statistical accuracy would improve.

On the other hand, if our forwards are running with the flight of the ball from the half back line, and taking problematic shots from great distances then our statistical accuracy would be awefull.

Teaching kicking technique may not necessarily improve accuracy, but a more efficient game plan may do the trick

Im unsure there is a better way of measuring it especially as Bruce seems to mark close to goal and he has 42 of them.

I thought kicking for goal was the major difference between us and Port on Sunday. We seemed to have a lot of hard set shots and couldn't get them, as well as panicking with some easy ones from general play. Certainly something we need to work on, think it's a mix of skill execution and composure.

Good sides kick accurately for goal so it is certainly an area we need to look at in the off season.

A lot of our points on the weekend was rushed. So it throws out your statistics.

When you get clobbered by 10 goals, it's a bit more than accuracy- we were still in it at half time against PA, then ground to a halt. Very disappointing.

2 were rushed. But we also kicked the ball out of bounds on the full in the FWD50 twice.

Until parents start letting there kids kick on the streets again and stop feeding Ipad's into there face, kicking in the AFL will continue to be poor. How much has changed, just 20-25 years ago the streets would be littered with kick to kick kids, now, ghost town

Kicking - my favourite subject  You make a good point Toy Saint.

It seems that the Saints Supporters have been able to see the problem for years, but the Recruiters don't/can't  Perhaps we may get "lucky" in this area, like Hawthorn.

Wind may also have something to do with it for those pesky outdoor games but I reckon it may be windy in Seaford too. Therefore those sport scientists/PE instructors also might have something to do with it as we can't be using our legs and feet to kick for goal more than 5 shots a week (if that).
