two picks 44 doesn't make sense.

Good to see Ess go from Hird’s to Bird’s....

But good trading by you guys. Carlisle and Pick 14 looks good for you guys. I’m glad you guys held firm with Dodoro, who seems to be under the pretence that Essendon is still a “powerful club”.

USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

So this is done.

Trade has been completed.

We gave up 5 to Essendon, 24 to Sydney and got Carlisle and pick 14.

Yeah.... I think we win out of that one.

Surely Swans get 24 not 44 so they have 23 & 24 for the academy kid

Fkn Dedoro just went on Trade radio and thanked Hawthorn for their professionalism.

He thought Carlisle was going to the Hawks.

This guy is unreal.

Still conflicting reports on whether we got 44.
If we didn't then we have given up a pick between 8 or 9 for Carlisle , which is overs.
Did we cave in at the end and not get 44?
If that is the case then we got our man for a bloody big price.

Yep. It was:

ST KILDA has landed key defender Jake Carlisle while maintaining a position in the first round of next month’s National Draft after securing a trade with Essendon and the Sydney Swans.

The Saints will acquire the recently turned 24-year-old Carlisle and the Swans’ pick No.14 in exchange for pick No.5 (to Essendon) and No.24 (to Sydney). The deal also involves an exchange of picks and players between Essendon and Sydney.

St Kilda Chief Operating Officer Ameet Bains said the Saints were delighted to welcome 198cm Carlisle to the club on a four-year deal.

“At his best Jake is an elite key defender and we are thrilled to have him join the Saints,” Bains said.

“We were adamant right from the start that we wanted to secure Jake but it had to be the right deal for the club, something agreed with Jake and his management up front. We feel that we have achieved that by retaining a first round pick at the National Draft.”

Bains said fans would be excited at the prospect of the 85-game defender forming a long-term partnership with Hugh Goddard among others.

“Securing Jake helps us fill a significant need in our list – a key defender – and is in line strategically with our list management objectives.

“We are very excited to have also secured a deal for Collingwood’s Nathan Freeman, which also helps address a need for a midfielder with elite speed and endurance."

Yesterday St Kilda traded its 2016 second round pick to Collingwood, while also swapping pick 63 for the Magpies’ pick 68, in exchange for 2013 top 10 draft pick Freeman.

“The fact that we can bring Jake and Nathan to our club while still keeping a position in the first round of the draft is a wonderful outcome for St Kilda,” Bains said.

St Kilda now has picks 14, 44, 45, 68, 81, 99 and 117 in November's National Draft.

don't they do it all through a computer system these days, so why the confusion?. I agree its an expensive trade. Dons have done very well. The hawks being assholes and sticking their nose in gave them great leverage when we were naively so openly desperate for him. There is an unwritten rule in club land that if a player wants to go to a club you let the two clubs negotiate. Hopefully Jake integrates in really well.

The article has since been edited,

'The fact that we can bring Jake and Nathan to our club while still keeping a position in the first round of the draft is a wonderful outcome for St Kilda,” Bains said.

St Kilda now has picks 14, 45, 68, 81, 99 and 117 in November's National Draft. "

Looks like the cheaters and the swine colluded to cheat us after agreeing to the original deal.

I would not say bloody big. He was always worth more than 24 but not as much as 5.

5 = 1878
14= 1112
24 = 785

= 1551 points = Pick 8. Which IMO may be a bit high.

Obviously would have been better with 44 as that would have been Pick 14. Which IMO is fair value given the WADA Cloud and "attitude" concerns.

However good tall defenders are in short supply, and hopefully if Goddard develops we will have two of them. Many clubs do not have one.

Howevera a BIG plus is that all his new team mates know that Carlisle passed up a deal to land him at the Hawks and chose the Saints instead and that should create a positive buzz.

It will also assist in 2016 if we are trying to land JOM or Kelly next year as we have now gotten both the Carlisle and Freeman deals done.

We now have a spine to last many years: McCartin Bruce Carlisle Goddard.
* Three of them can when required play back or forward = great versatility

Saints PR probably wrote it last night, and did not update this morning when the deal changed.

Carlisle should be a good pick up , no doubt about it.
However with all our grandstanding over the last week and a bit , all we have managed to do is get Carlisle for the equivalent of pick 8.
To me that is way above what we should have paid.
Essendon & Sydney got the better deal. Why did we cave in on 44 at the last minute?
Bains didn't do as well as we thought he would.

How did we get screwed over??? We got our trade target and stayed in the first round of the draft, so in terms of points, we picked up Carlisle for a points differential of -1502 which equates to a pick between 8 and 9 which is maybe slightly overs but certainly not reamed.
I think Sydney got reamed big time on this deal, they effectively traded Bird for an increase of 16 points which equates to a draft pick between 72 and 73, I'm not sure why they even got involved in the deal.

Reckon we did alright...Essendon did really well (and that hurts)
If Carlisle had ended up going to Hawks it would have felt pretty ordinary....not many 24 yr old KPP's out there, he could be a great 5-7 year player for us
Maintained a first round pick....what is the quality difference between pick5 and pick14? possibly not enormous in this draft........
Pick 23 becomes pick 27 effectively......again, after 20 it is pretty even apparently

Well done Saints, just missed out on the shadenfreude of seeing Dodoro humiliated, but nevermind

Carlisle fits our demographic perfectly. He's the same age as Tom Hickey, and has shown himself to be an excellent key defender. How many more years would it take for us to a) find another key defender, and b) develop him to the point of being at Carlisle's level? My guess would be around 6 years, with no guarantees. Quality key position players are the hardest to find, so if you can get a good one who has many years ahead of him, then you need to take that opportunity. Okay, we've coughed up our second round pick in a weak draft, and we've slid from early first round to mid-late first round with our first pick. You can't get players for nothing unless they're free agents, so I believe the club got the best outcome possible given Essendon's stubborn stance.

I know it stinks, but our priority was a quality key defender. We got back pick 14, so it's not a disaster. We got Goddard, Mckenzie, Dunstan, and Acres at around pick 20 remember. I know we won't get the cream of the picks, but a midfielder at 14 versus a midfielder at 5 can often mean very little in the long run.
