Yeah agree Con we definetly need someone with a bit of outside pace.

Oliver is another inside mid isn't he? We have plenty of them already.

Seems to be mainly inside yeah but tested well in agility and the 20m sprint so could end up being very versatile at 187cm. Kicked 6 goals in the final TAC match!

Mathieson seems to be exclusively inside - doesnt do anything on the outside and is below average for speed. I know that doesnt mean he wont be a gun player - he very well may be - But I am purely talking list balance in this discussion - and for list balance purposes we need some run.

Partington looks very similar to Freeman.

I think the ones that most suit our needs are Clarke, Milera and then Tucker (Bonner and Ah Chee also considerations if those three are gone).

No upgrade for Sinclair? Likely to be better than 2 of those so seems unfair.

But does that mean they dont rate Dunstan, Acres and/or Ross?

If they dont rate these three to be good in clearances well then we should have traded one of them. If they DO rate these three guys in clearances then we dont need Matho.

The way I see it either:

a) Get Matho but trade out one of Dunstan, Ross, Acres
b) Back in Ross, Dunstan, Acres as clearance specialists and bring in some more balanced players who can provide some outside run (Milera, Oliver, Bonner, Tucker).

Everyone knows we lack pace and outside run. I dont see the point of having 5 or 6 slow guys trying to win the clearances (including Armo). It just doesnt seem like a balanced list to me.
Plus one, Con. Like most people, I've only seen the highlights reel of Mathieson, and quite frankly it left me underwhelmed. I don't understand the apparent love for him even when we had pick five. Clayton Oliver for me. Lots of improvement left in him. Potential gun and exactly what we need. We already have several Mathieson types.

Unfair? It's list management, I'm sure the kid will understand if that's what happens. Jack Frost played 22 games for the Pies in 2014 and wasn't promoted at the end of the year. In 2015 he played 20 and was finally promoted. That's smart use of the rookie list, would love to see us do the same.

Sinclair will be promoted even if it is with pick 117

You know WW, I am not into conspiracy theories, however I am thinking that the recruiters always knew that #5 was going out the door because of Carlisle and with that started to condition us by way of ITK's that they were very keen on Mathesion as they knew that if they picked him up in the teens they would have a cool story on draft night to tell.

Because quite frankly, while he seems to be a good player, we have a plethora of those types. Coupled that with the fact that we are getting another GoP HBF in Rice and it would be an ordinary draft night in my view.

Don't get me wrong, I think both Matho and Rice are capable of being AFL footballers, just that they are not exactly what we require.

To me Tucker or Gresham would be a better fit for a running mid.

I know the highlights can be misleading (by emphasising the positives) -
But, anyway - going by what I see - he's elusive, finds and creates space, goes for a run whenever the opportunity presents itself, takes a strong mark, seems to kick both feet (I think), is a tackle machine - really latches on, shrugs off and eludes tackles, makes the right decisions, quickly - and he's not slow - but not quick. He's said to lack polish.
I like the way he bounces straight back up after going to the ground.
Ticks a lot of positive boxes - and a couple of negative ones. However, he's more than just an inside midfielder.

Agreed samoht...IMO Oliver would be perfect for us. Unfortunately, it appears he may be gone by our pick. :(

Ah Chee if available. i think we need outside speed and a player with the X Factor . We really lack this ( billings may have it but too injured to know). really the lack of this type of player hurt us in 2009 and 2010. I think this was what Lovett was meant to be.
We have a good young group of foot soldiers but need a couple players with that X factor
IMO

Your forgetting the two list spots we filled with Carlisle and Freeman

Yep, my mistake.

But I'd really still like to get hold of Lovell, real ball magnet who kicks goals

I have total faith in Trout and his recruiting team and am sure they will pick the right kid at 14, but on the little I have seen in would be best available Clayton Oliver for me!

Look I have faith in our recruiters too - but I have no idea if it is blind irrational faith at this point. The cold hard reality is we are coming off 16th, 18th, 14th.
So at this point I have faith but I acknowledge I may well be insane

As well as Ray, we have Eli, Murdoch, Saunders, Curren and Lee on the list. If only one of that Loy is delisted there are some lucky boys.

Ray isnt contracted. Saunders is but it looks like we will Rookie him. Eli, Murdoch and Curren are on notice. Probably two of the three will be gone at the end of 2016.

I'll be happy if one of those three earns a 2017 list spot, played 11 nondescript games between them this year (some injuries didn't help).

Matho unlikely

Darcy Tucker if available, but probably gone

No to Rioli

Patington, Gresham, Oliver, Ah Chee all good pick ups...

Curnow and Dunkley are a bit like Acres... Could be good or could be nothing
