Some of the fringe players like Shenton, Murdoch ,Membrey and Holmies were really good as well. Wright was disappointing - I don't think he's got what it takes. Longer played forward a lot and worked really hard without dominating. Pierce looked lost in the first half but then competed really well in the second. He's pretty athletic for a big guy and took a couple of storng grabs - he's got potential.
Excellent summary. Can't really add anything except for my undying love for Gresham

How is Holmes compared to last season? The soft side of me likes a feel good story.

He's a bit of the forgotten man but was great today. My worry with him is like with Eli - what is the weapon he has that he can take into the AFL? The players who make it AFL level have some real weapons that makes them dangerous. Just being a good all round player isn't enough these days.
Curren clearly has guns. That is not enough?

Thoughts on game:

Good solid win by Sandi against a good opposition!

People complaining about the Saints not having input to the Sandringham set ups can stop worrying. Hudson gave Longer and Pierce heaps of time up forward today, even when Minson was dominating Holmes.

BOG
Templeton, Gresham, Curren, Grymborg, Newcombe?

Players notes:

Contrary to what people have suggested Eli will make it as a midfielder - good skills & motor.
Gresham for a 1st year player showed his class, not flashy but very very effective.
Curren just gives 110% every week, great eftort today! Terrific game and good depth player.
White has extraordinary kicking skills and awareness, good draft choice.
Rice a smart footballer but will need to work hard to be anything other than a back pocket.
McKenzie cant see him becoming the wingman the club wanted, is destined to become another smalll defender. No attacking game but better skilled version of Geary, when ready.
Murdoch is a exceptional kick but cant win or find the ball himself, plus made some ordinary kick out errors.
Delaney is a shadow of his former self - club would have got much better value out of Hardigan (Crows) as suggested by many. Delist 2016
Pierce is starting to show something as a forward but needs to get much stronger in the upper body.
Holmes honest does some good things but not an AFL ruckman, monstered by Minson at times.
Longer ok as they are trying to develop him as a forward ruck option?
Shenton good honest trier, has some pace. List clogger delist 2016.
Wright no where near AFL level kicking skills, made far too many costly turnovers. Delist 2016.

Good win but apart from Gresham, Templeton, Longer and White there is not a lot of future AFL players. Surprisingly I was much more impressed with the Bulldogs list/future AFL potential players even though they lost.

Bit hard there on both of Rice and DMack who are both coming back from Glandular fever. Particularly Rice as it is his first year at the club.

Goddard's last 3 quarters were good. Should get better as he builds fitness after an interupted pre-season.

But yes there are a number of players who have been tried for some years who can be let go at then end of this year.

Pierce's second haldfwas probably the best I have seen him play. Gave me some hope that he may still make it.

match report in the Age
In other matches, Port Melbourne withstood a gritty Northern Blues by 19 points, Matthew Kreymborg led Sandringham to a 28-point win over Footscray with four goals and, on Friday night, Geelong belted North Ballarat by 74 points.

Pretty much agree until the last sentence.
Gresham and White are the future of our club. DMac will be a player as will Lewis Pierce.
Lewie will be a gun ruckman, he's much bigger this year and much more versatile player. He set up the win with two goals in the third quarter when the game was up for grabs. Longer will never be a forward/ruckman Lewie is!

My thought when I saw Billy in the forward line was they were playing all 3 talls to ensure they got some game time with no Devlp game this weekend
hence rotating 2 through the forward line and then mainly Jason in the ruck
Jason was hampered mid second qu with some sort of knock but ran it out

Lewie seemed off early in the game but came back strongly with those goals and was solider after that .

Footscary kicked themselves out of it in the last with 1 gl 9 pt-- But hampered by Sandy pressure- which improved after the first quarter./

SANDRINGHAM 18.9 (117) d FOOTSCRAY 12.17 (89)

Streak: Sandringham – L B W / Footscray – W L L

Telling facts: The Zebras got themselves in the winners’ column for 2016 in a pressure-packed but entertaining clash with the Bulldogs at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. The first half was a see-sawing affair that saw several lead changes, but Sandringham made the decisive move with an eight-goal-to-four third quarter to set up victory.

Leading goalkickers: Kreymborg 4, Curren 3, Shenton 2, Pierce 2, Membrey 2 (Sandringham) / Redpath 3, Grabowski 2 (Footscray)

Kreymborg looks like a very good player. Very dangerous around goals. If he keeps it up will be drafted into the AFL.

Reckon you're way too quick to write off Rice, Curren, Dmac.

Why are people in such a hurry to write off young fellas who've just arrived at the club or are still finding their feet at the top level? I don't get it. Everyone needs time to develop.

This article on Seb Ross from today's Age gives some nice insights into the challenges guys like Rice, Curren, Dmac, Goddard, Eli et al are currently facing.

Exactly.

Plus look at the Hawks. They DEVELOP players for years at Box Hill in many cases before they get to play a batch of games in the seniors. ie Sicily who is
21 and has now only played 8 games, but certainly now looks to be capable of playing asa regular senior player. He knows what to do and where to run because he has had the time for it to be drilled into him.

What really excited me yesterday was that you could see that Sandi was playing the way that the StKilda Senior team is meant to play. So anyone going up can slot in as the gameplan wil be instinctive to them. Simple concept but hey I have not really seen that on display before.

The Club is clearly thinking long-term too and aiming to have a "complete" team for the 2018/20 window. Certainly not all will make it as the wheat is being sorted by the chaf, BUT players are now being given serious development as part of the process.

= Pierce has been perserved with to play that Forward-ruck role that we currently do not have. But with a 2018-20 success timeline Pierce will be 23-26 and ripe to possibly own that role then.

= Geary (small back) replacement: Rice, White, Murdoch , DMack = At least one will be good enough by 2018/20. These add to Savage, Newes and Webster.

= Membrey is still only 21 and so still is very much a viable potential third forward option.

Midfield remains for me the area that the club needs to add some real class in. From those not in the 22 now apart from Greshem we mainly have potential depth mids rather than future elites and in the midfield you do need to havea batch of guns if you want to win a flag. I think the club is planninga FA to bea source of this, but getting an absolute star mid via FA to the Saints reamains a tough gig.

Thought Gresham's game yesterday was exciting to say the least. He is tough moves well through even heavy traffic and has great hands and foot skills, he is a great pick up. Curran played very well but will find it hard to get back in to the seniors as we have so
Many similar type players. Was impressed with white. Great pace and foot skills although a couple of scrappy kicks spoiled what otherwise would have been a very good game. I thought that rice was serviceable and obviously has the toughness like the old man. Every year that I have watched Pierce at sandy he has improved, could be the real smokie for us in two years time. Don't think wrights disposal is afl level unfortunately as he is otherwise a very tough footballer. Dmac was serviceable whilst Billy should be destroying this level but isn't. Eli worries me, has the smarts but maybe lacks another string to his bow. Holmes was good and is still developing. There is a young kid Noone at sandy who is very calm with ball in hand and is extraordinarily courageous, well worth a rookie spot I would have thought. Murdoch and shenton just don't impact enough. Goddard reads the ball incredibly well, very Dustin fletcher like IMO

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2016-04-2 ... in-of-2016
Sandringham Coach Paul Hudson made mention of that fact post-match and how pleased he was for his side to rebound after the Round 1 loss to the Box Hill Hawks two weeks ago.

“Our focus was to start well and not to be too far behind, which we achieved. To also gather momentum and find a way to win was really pleasing also,” Hudson told saints.com.au.

“We got on top in many of the key areas and making the most of our opportunities was really important for us. It was terrific to deliver on those goals we set out for today.

“We had a lot of guys step up and play their role which was terrific. Matt Kreymborg (26 disposals, 4 goals), Jade Gresham (31 disposals, 1 goal), Eli Templeton (32 disposals, 1 goal) and Tom Curren (32 disposals, 3 goals) played really well for us.”

Hudson also made special mention to Tom Lee and Darren Minchington, who have been rewarded with AFL selection in Alan Richardson’s St Kilda side following strong VFL form.
