Hugh has only had one full preseason. They don't do much in their first year.
Source re growth spurt? He was already listed on the club website at 196cm. Has he got taller than that? Thats' a big unit. He's still only 19 so FFS everyone, give him time.

I have a feeling that this will be a tight man-on-man game.

Lonie out for Membrey at smaller Etihad ground. Puts some grunt in there.
Montagna (inj) - Acres.

VFL is a long way below AFL. Gresham not ready yet for AFL.

I don't have a problem with Hugh being held back to develop and build his fitness

Good move

It's this crap about dehydration 2 and a half months ago still being a factor that is total rubbish.
For gods sake, he played a game a fortnight later. He is a full time athlete, I'm sure he can get over a bout of dehydration.

I think we'll have problems containing Gawn. Hickey tried hard in the NAB Challenge game but Holmes was the reason the tapouts for us improved.
Going in with just Hickey could get ugly in that dept.
If we do maybe we need to really sit on their midfielders. Especially Jones.
Could Geary do a shut down job on him ?
Jones can carve a hole in a weak midfield given the chance.

Fun Fact:
Melbourne have had 4 debutants in 2016 to Saints 1.
Melbourne had 8 in 2015 to St Kilda 6.
So 12 to 7 in the last 13 months.

What does that mean in terms of 'rebuilding'?

Isn't it appropriate that Petracca debuts against us... It's funny how things work out.

A bit of theatre from Roos perhaps? He should be out to impress. Similarly, so should Paddy. Looking forward to it, anticipating we'll continue Melbourne's streak of misery.

The Tractor vs the Cart! Ours might be slower but the ox is patient and the earth...is...whatever. The media will love pick 1 v 2 hindsight speculation. Petracca looks huge already - couldn't we have pitied our way to a priority pick - one flag in 100 years - throw us a bone!

I don't care if Petracca goes on to be a Fyfe level superstar mid. I'm damn happy with our pack-splitting. swaggering, huge power forward with the great hands who will send defenders flying like ten pins in the grand final. I'm putting the Cart before the Tractor.

According to a Melbourne supporter I know, 17 clubs would have taken Petracca at No 1. Only one would have taken McCartin. We shall see.

Fun Facts:
Last week Saints ave age = 25y6m, 95 games
Melbourne ave age = 24y3m, 75 games

Saints had 11 players with < 50 games
Melbourne had 11 players with < 50 games

If they bring in Oliver and Petracca they will probably be even younger.
If Joey misses we will be younger also.

Rubbish

If Melbourne win flags, he wins norm smiths and Paddy is not as good as Kosi

Of course there will be questions, as most people had CP pegged as a pretty clear #1

Easy for Melbourne to pick Petracca with Paddy already gone at their pick.

Who would they have taken if they had pick 1 and if they didn't already have Hogan on their list? No one knows.

We took Paddy and plenty of well credentialed people support that selection.

Nonetheless some folk love to play these games and will be quick to post negative Saints recruitment comments when Petracca stars (as he will cos he was a top 3 pick)

I suppose our other two debutantes couldn't debut for us as one is out for the year thanks to WADA and the other has his hammy problems. Who does that leave that may debut - White? Rice? I don't think they're ready yet. And Gresham isn't really ready yet either.

So far it's been a bust on the recruiting side this year as far as debutantes go. :(

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Fun Fact:
Melbourne have not beaten us in a proper season game since the 2006 Elimination Final.
That is 12 consecutive wins for the Saints. Quite a streak.

Don't pay more than $20 for those seats.

So how the hell do we beat Melbourne?

I honestly cant see it. Even if we actually show up and have a crack.

I reckon our mids may get smashed this week. They can bring in Oliver too, who goes alright.

Don't have a great feeling about this one.

Ahem...they haven't beaten us in 10 years...last year we beat them by nearly 40 points at the MCG without even raising a sweat. The pressure is definitely on them to produce the goods, we just have to brush up on out disposal.

You did point out their star spangled array of key forwards, I suppose?

Funny that, because Melbourne was into Brayshaw all through his draft year. Practically committed to him.

So if Frawley hadn't ducked over to the Hawks and the extra pick not been handed out, who would the Dee's have picked after we picked Paddy?

Interesting.

I warned him of the possibility of premature jubilation and hoped it didn't blow up in his face, so to speak.

Well, the wouldn't be a Melbourne supporter if they weren't getting ahead of themselves. Now they've won 2 in a row for the first time in 5 years I'm expecting 'The Streak' to come out on DVD any day now.
