I wonder if you make these statements sometimes just to be argumentative?

2007
But it was the run and play-on tactics employed by St Kilda in the third quarter, instigated mainly by Sam Fisher, who was magnificent as the loose man in defence, that changed the game. They had 52 handballs to 37, with the handball receive ledger going from minus 15 to plus one in the Saints' favour, while the inside 50s were 44-34 their way
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/s ... 1113956543

2009 season
Fisher again showed a strong presence in St Kilda's home and away season, playing as either a loose backman or the centre halfback. He performed strongly in the first qualifying final against Collingwood with a career high 42 disposals
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Fisher_(footballer)

2011
St Kilda’s favourite ploy of leaving Sam Fisher loose man in defence allowed him to rack up the stats, but it left the problem of what to do up forward against a numerically (and spiritually) superior Geelong defence.
http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/st-kilda ... ving-dead/

2012
Sam Fisher had success as the Saints' loose man in defence, while Brendon Goddard was the Saints general again, dictating play from down back. Goddard had 21 touches to half time and finished with 33 as well as one goal.
http://live-footy.heraldsun.com.au/matc ... 0120140208

2013
St Kilda is one of the best sides in creating a loose man in defence who is able to read the play and create a two-on-one situation on the opposition’s gun forward. More often than not, Sam Fisher is that player, whose rebounding ability also hurts the opposition. Fisher did this to great effect in the first half, affecting a number of spoils and contests in front of Lance Franklin. Fisher also had three rebound 50s before leaving the ground with an injury. That spelt trouble for the Saints as the Hawks saw an opening and went for it.

Absolute accuracy there...

I believe everything I read from expert on Wikipedia ... I craft all of my knowledge by reading Wikipedia

So who were the opposition coaches just allowing fisher to run around on his own in the back half dominating.

Or was it more likely that it appeared that way because he read the ball and dropped off his opponent when they pushed high up the ground. As Nick Riewoldts opponent would. His large stats would come from zoning where initially clubs allowed free possession in the back third, before stk, then moreso Collingwood decided to press.

But hey, you'd know that

I'll go on what I know

You go on what you read on Wikipedia

Oh,

And btw are you suggesting Luke Delaney is a better defender than Sam Fisher?

Far from it, I'm suggesting we need to keep Delaney on our list as he's more than handy and we lose 2 kpb soon enough

I agree with that

At 150k he is not hurting and can play a role on the list.

Like Jarryn (obviously not as good)

But hopefully we have better players starting in their position otherwise we aren't much chop

Won some footy playing loose in the last but was well beaten by Patrenko most of the game. Really, enough of this freeing him up bulls***... He needs to sacrifice his possession game and pick up a key forward...

He is our strongest overhead defender.... Play on a key fwd is more important to us than getting a cheap kick behind the ball.

Well look at it this way, Were still to see if Goddard fills that role, and if Carlisle is injured or it we get another KPB we still might struggle with depth. He's a good depth player its not as if we have a surplus of key defenders

Playton

The first two are actuall suggesting he wasn't a loose... Or in fact a running back

Saying that because hudghton, Dawson, Blake are there he can't play as a drop off, or plus one he has to play key back

Second one explaining how a player is able to manufacture themselves to get loose ... It's not just a fact of having NO opponent. Michael Johnson was best at it in the afl

Third was critisicm about his match up with Patrenko... Instead of being wasted on chump like patrenko.

Do you realise every defender spends Half of the game getting off his man, offensively. It's when the team is in possession. No defender in the afl plays shoulder to shoulder with an opponent for 120 mins... A lot of the time is spent spreading when the team gains possession or pressing forward to hold the ball in their half... Or be an option sideways

But hey, you sound like you know your footy... Perhaps make a comment on footy yourself though?
Do you think Sam Fisher had an opponent 2007-2011 in 5 years of footy?

keep digging up anything you can

With Fish out for another 3, and probably looking shaky for 2017 as a result, I'd suggest Luke's job security looks pretty good. Has he got the goods to tie down Daniher this week? If not, who takes him?

Fisher is cooked. Great career deserves to go out as all time club great.

Would be ludicrous to go around next year and hobble around with a busted body. Ludicrous.

Delany hasn't got it. I think he is out of contract. They would be mad to give him another one.

Agree Fisher is done...
Need to keep Delaney as backup. Very solid just not creative enough but worth keeping.
Lee will be delisted just not good enough to and body isn't up to afl footy.
Fisher has often played as a loose man.
MUST try to develop or recruit a back with goddards delayed development. Hurley would be a nice fit.
Would be nice to see Coughlan play a few games.
But with Geary, Wright, Gilbert as backs, any new backs.....must be able too kick!!

Fisher turns 34 on Sunday.
He is currently out of the side injured.
We have Carlisle coming back next season.

Anything who thinks Fisher should play next year is placing sentiment over reality.

We may as well get Darryl Baldock back. And Trevor Barker. And Robert Harvey.

All champions.

He tried to get the ball off Daniher by spinning into trouble, only succeeding in rolling around on the ground.

He did NOT get my 3 votes this week.

He is unlikely to play in St Kilda's next premiership win.

He's unlikely to play in another St Kilda win. Tom Lee over Delaney by the length of the Flemington straight. Delaney has no skill, awareness or footy smarts.

I actually felt quite embarrassed for him when the ball was coming in to a one on one and he was facing his opponent instead of the kicker.
Compared to him Spud Dawson actually looks like Silvagni combined with Scarlett!

I wish we'd kept Tom Simpkin....

There I said it.

Could win a one on one, and make them earn every possession.

At least for this season while we waited for Jake.

Tom is fearless and strong but you've got to have more strings to your bow these days to hold down a spot in defense. We have to find talent and sometimes they can be older age draftees.

The Swans found a beauty who is flourishing after Malceski left and Reece Shaw retired...2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 37

The Doggies also got a bargain with Marcus Adams last year.

Yep pretty sad. I don't like slagging players and it was all there for everyone to see. Hopefully plays a lot better next time.

Neither has Lee. I would get rid of both of them.
