Actually I just read that Stevens is out of contract. Doesn't that mean we get him for nothing?

That only works if he nominates for the PSD and then Essendon and 8 other teams have access to him before us.
If we want him we have to trade with the dogs.

If the Doggies have offered him a contract then he can reject that and go to the PSD or be traded. So Essendon could get him with pick one in the PSD.
If the Doggies have not offered him a contract then he will be delisted and be able to be selected as a delisted free agent.

Because he is the only ruckman we have who has any currency. Longer is worth less now than he was 12 months ago, and arguably we would be "selling low " . They would be banking on one of Linger or Pierce coming good - with Holmes as insurance for the next 2 seasons.

I would imagine that we are offering him a fair but not over the top deal and well under $450K.

Looking at his year on AFL player ratings seemed a bit unlucky to be on the outer after round 17 I think it was.

I admittedly haven't followed him closely in recent times so perhaps went early. I've heard he doesn't have a Dogs contract in front of him (or that they've withdrawn his offer), if thats the case he will be a DFA. If Dogs do in fact have a contract I can't see us giving up more than a pick in the 60s. I doubt we'd get a better prospect drafted in that range.

As prw pointed out, probably only knocks out Wright or Meatball so immediately improves our best 22.

He's no a grader but he has proven in the past that he can get high 30 possession games and double figure tackles who can hit the scoreboard so he could be an astute moneyball option.

Trading Hickey will weaken our list. He's so important structure wise. We've also put the time into his development and this year we began reaping the rewards. He's the ruckman we need for our next challenge. I have faith that Lewie Pierce will be his back up. Unfortunately, Billy's trade value has plummeted on the back of a very ordinary, injury riddled year. We need Hickey more than we need Lachie Weller.
