Barrett - Should the Saints say goodbye to Nick?

Post: # 1674442Post shrodes »

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-05-29/b ... k-riewoldt
NICK Riewoldt has played footy at its highest level for 17 seasons, desperately wants to make it 18.

He's 34, turns 35 in October, and his troublesome knees are as banged up as ever.

One of those knees now has bone grinding on bone, forcing the six-time St Kilda best-and-fairest to the sidelines at least for a fortnight, possibly for three weeks or more.

For him, the doubt over his knees is something he has successfully managed for at least half of his extraordinary career.

But that doubt is now a far from ideal backdrop as he and his management begin long-planned talks with Saints officials about a new contract. It is a situation which does not help his case to be a listed player in 2018.
Betteridge's law of headlines anyone?

Slow news day for Barrett by any chance?

If he is fit Riewoldt is still a great player and will be next year. If his knee holds up he is still a very viable part of our list.

What about Ablett and his dicky shoulder Barrett?

Is it time for AFL.com.au to say goodbye to Barrett???

We live in hope, JB. Just when we thought Hutchy was bad, along comes Damo and lowers the bar further.

Nothing wrong with coming out of the closet these days, if that is what you meant.

Nick is clearly still in our best handful of players when fit, but I would prefer that we managed him better in order to give him a better chance of playing at his bet later in the year…

He should have had a rest weeks ago, regardless of what he says he can do.

If we can't do without him in round 5 or 6 then we are stuffed anyway… we could be much smarter with such a valuable player who has degenerative knee issues.

Play rounds 1,2,3, rest round 4, play 5,6,7 rest round 8, play round 9&10 - bye, play 12,13,14, rest 15, play 16,17,18 rest 19, play 20,21,22

4 managed games throughout the year and he might not be hobbling around like a 70 year old.

Danny Southern of the Bulldogs retired 16 years ago at age 24
because he didn't want to miss out on playing with his kids due to 70-year old knees

Surely Montagna knows this is his last year? Cant be a secret surely?

I'd give Roo one more year - but only if the medicos give the green light. And it should be made clear that 2018 is his final year.
