Gilbo's 200th
Nice piece in The Age
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/a-r ... 4zbuz.html
"Sam Gilbert isn’t ready to reflect. There was a time he didn’t think he’d make it to 200 games, but now that he is almost there, the hope of good things still to come at St Kilda keeps him going.
His career hasn't followed a classic trajectory. He’s not a particularly decorated player, but it is easy to forget how good he was in St Kilda’s grand final seasons of 2009 and 2010, with an All-Australian squad nomination and third placing in the Saints’ best and fairest to his name across those memorable years.
...
But he has never quite reached those same heights again. Injuries ruined what could have been his prime football years between 2013 and 2015, and his own form in some way mirrored that of the Saints as they fell down the ladder, and began a rebuild which has, at least for now, stagnated.
But there are reasons Gilbert has lasted. His versatility is one. Most of his career has been played as a defender, but he has provided nuisance value up forward and even pinch-hit in the ruck last year."

Re: Gilbo's 200th
Cops a fair bit of stick on this site Gilbo, particularly for his foot skills which are not always AFL standard.
What is often missed is the hardness Gilbo adds to the team, he hits hard and is aggressive.
200 games is a bloody good career, well done Sam.

Good career.
He was a critical part of the 09/10 teams.
Someone's gotta say it....
Thanks for Duthie knuckle head.

Has been a great servant for the club.
Has the perfect build for a modern footballer.
And a really nice bloke as well.
Well done Gilbo.

Re: Gilbo's 200th
I wanted him gone at the end of 2013. In a way there are positives with him still around as he's been a good mentor and role model during the rebuild...as long as he remebers to wear the right boots and as long as the young ones in the team don't get any kicking lessons from himJoffa Burns wrote:Cops a fair bit of stick on this site Gilbo, particularly for his foot skills which are not always AFL standard.

Happy to see him in the team the last few years and congratulations Sam on a great achievement

Re: Gilbo's 200th
Any whipping boy that makes 200 games is a good player... He took over when Blake retired... He's handled the mantle well.. Just like a lake not a huge talent but his endevour could never be questioned...
Well done Gilbo

Well done Gilbo. A true club champ and warrior. The bloke would run through a bluestone wall for ST KFC.

Re: Gilbo's 200th
One of my favourite players, tough as nails and will play just about anywhere and do anything for the club. He has one of the best sidesteps in the game, unfortunately he always steps to his right which then completely buggers him up because his right foot is there for decoration only.

Re: Gilbo's 200th
Some players have x facter. Gilbert has chaos facter ... or G facter.
Gee why did he did that
Gee how did he do that
Gee that was good
Gee that was brave
Gee he was great today
The team is generally better with him in it. Even if he can manage to kick the ball out on the full from any angle.
Great reward to get to 200 and a champion of the saints

Re: Gilbo's 200th
Any player that gets to 200 games deserves enormous respect, the statistics on the percentages that do is very low.
A player to survive that long needs to have the ability and durability to survive all the challenges the brutal AFL system provides.
Well done Gilbo...

Let's not forget that you can always rely on him to step up in big games. He had mighty games in both the '09 & '10 GFs, in fact he's the one that got us back into the 2010 GF.
