Handball Received

Post: # 1723817Post Sainter_Dad »

An interesting stat

Don't know how much it means because we all know that the Saints are ineffective with their handballs, but:

When Richmond handball, then run and dispose of the ball they average around 600 metres gained each game

St Kilda - effectively - Zero metres gained.

And often when they handball it's to someone under pressure causing an immediate turnover.

Usually hence the metres gained being zero - but I am so surprised that we gain NO metres via handball received.

Mate its very relevant because it shows how our use of handball going backwards and sideways just invites pressure. Often this is followed by a turnover or a scrub kick forward. Our ball movement structures are completely ineffective and highlights how poorly coached we are.

We handball backwards out of packs to often which is generally to the oppositions advantage as we miss the target.

SD do you know Geelong's stat is just out of interest? they seem to be good at keeping the ball moving forward.

What's the source of this? Around 600 and effectively zero don't sound very statty.

597 metres gained was the stat that they were talking about - it was from a discussion that I had with a colleague - they remember seeing it - but do not recall where

sounds like a champion data stat to me - so someone with access might be able to confirm
Stonecold seems to have high level access so might be able to help out
However I dont really need the stats to confirm what I see out on the field
Anyone who watched the tigers vs pies game on the weekend can easily see the difference between the best sides and what we offer
Just watch the last quarter to see some superb examples of Martin and Cotchin releasing handballs to team mates - that were running forward AND in clear

The other interesting stat* was elevation of < = to Sea level was achieved; the high float hospital style was matched by the straight to your toe style. Hard to anticipate, gets the opposition confused.

* champion fake data.

I’ve posted this before but really feel it articulates the game style problem...
The game plan

Tap the ball and pass to mid, hand ball that to another mid, the handball back and fourth before a quick pass 20m to the side, that guy handballs behind him before a short pass back where it comes from. Pass the ball to the left, handball one to the other to the other, oh oh we're under pressure, hand ball out the back to another guy under pressure, and to another and to another, quick pass the ball, some how we're at half forward, short pass to a contest, hand ball to a man running into 50m, kick short to a contest, TURNOVER

So basically we use handball as a defensive tool instead if an attacking weapon to break the lines.

And Hawthorn were the only team with a negative (-37) metres gained from handballs.

I reckon Brereton is correct that the Saints need to be sure that if the receiving player of a handball is sat flatfooted there needs to be outsiders calling for another handball. The kicks just fail and are a given turnover. The second person to handball should be able to develop time to hit up someone with a kick only if directed by others in the team. That's coaching and leadership that seems to be missing being replaced with panic.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency
