With this year being dubbed a super draft, should the club be brave and trade out a package of senior guys to land an extra pick(s) inside the top 10?
Little bit like Hawthorn in '04 when they essentially traded out Nathan Thompson for another pick in the top 10 (Lewis) and then continued the trend in '05 when they traded out Jono Hay and Nathan Lonie for picks 18 & 14.
At the moment, we have a few positions that are a little overcrowded, those being the ruck, key forward & inside mid
Bruce
Membrey
Paddy
Battle
Armo
Ross
Dunstan
Steele
Hickey
Longer
For arguments sake, would you trade Bruce, Ross and someone like Weller for a pick in the top 10 and a secondary pick inside the top 15-20?

Re: Trading into the top 10
The reality is if you added any two of Sloane / Gaff / Kelly, who would you drop from the 22? There is probably your answer.The_President wrote: ↑Mon 18 Jun 2018 11:24am With this year being dubbed a super draft, should the club be brave and trade out a package of senior guys to land an extra pick(s) inside the top 10?

You also have to assume Coffield and Clarke will be better next year and demand a spot. Also have all the half backs like Geary, Rice, White Webster etc.

Re: Trading into the top 10
I think we would do it just for the top 10 pick, but unfortunately combining a couple of 2nd round value players with a delist material player won't get it done.The_President wrote: ↑Mon 18 Jun 2018 11:24am For arguments sake, would you trade Bruce, Ross and someone like Weller for a pick in the top 10 and a secondary pick inside the top 15-20?

Re: Trading into the top 10
I agree we need picks. But honestly there is no one on your list nor any combo of players on your list that bring a top 10 pick.
Bruce pick #40-50 ( honestly, I dont know if he wants to play or maybe he's lost, but can't see a player who has gotten worse each season for 3 yrs commanding much)
Membrey keep
Paddy pick # 30-35 ( still too raw and his game reel shows a slow, stay at home forward that could be a decent 2nd man up but never going to be the main target, still good value)
Battle keep ( lots of upside)
Armo no takers ( been a wonderful soldier but he is fading)
Ross pick # 25-30 ( he can be effective with his possession but more often the issue is he gathers possessions then poorly disposed of it)
Dunstan pick # 40-50 ( decent mid, had some good runs and could add value to a club lacking an inside slogger)
Steele pick #45-60 ( this is generous)
Hickey pick #40-60 keep him - dont have a replacement
Longer pick #40-60 ( just because he's tall)
Bruce pick #40-50 ( honestly, I dont know if he wants to play or maybe he's lost, but can't see a player who has gotten worse each season for 3 yrs commanding much)

Re: Trading into the top 10
The reality is that we might get a Top 10 pick in a weak draft but - 2018 isn't a weak draft so, no one is going to give up quality for list cloggers unless they have a specific need. I could see Essendon requiring Ross or Dunstan as they have no big midfielders. The only issue there is the Ross and Dunstan are very limited accumulators with average skills who don't hurt with their possessions. Bruce can run but is an average mark and kick and can't ruck so, not sure who'd want that player - certainly not for a Top 10. Hickey and Longer are both very limited - one is strong who doesn't do much after a hitout and the other is not strong who accumulates possessions around the group but is ineffectual in the contest.The_President wrote: ↑Mon 18 Jun 2018 11:24am With this year being dubbed a super draft, should the club be brave and trade out a package of senior guys to land an extra pick(s) inside the top 10?

Happy to keep Paddy, Membrey, Battle, (one of) Dunstan or Ross, Steele. The rest we'd be very luck to get a late second rounder in a strong, deep draft.
Our only hope is that GCS have another brain fade and offer something decent for Armo (a la pick 2 for Weller last year).
Go you red, black & white warriors

Re: Trading into the top 10
Delusional
We have a core of players Drafted with higher end selections over recent years
We have obtained Carlisle and Freeman by trading
What we do not have is a core of experienced players capable of determining the result of any game including by providing leadership
That is the gaping mid ship hole which sees us taking water
What we do not have is skilled, quick players which is why we have really struggled to beat Brisbane and Gold Coast both of whom have troubled us with outside run until our big, cumbersome mids caught up
The summary of this is that we need further very good and experienced players to fill the age and leadership demographic we are missing and the so called "outside" skills bring players who can get the ball then really hurt Opposition sides with their skills
We need class not "grunt"
