When Ryder kicked the first goal and Longer stood there transfixed, waving his arms to no where in particular and not even near the arc of the goals. He failed to put any pressure on and looked totally clueless. The writing was on the wall!!

According to the AFL website Hickey has been better than Longer this year in the ruck. 8.6 hitouts to advantage 4.7 clearances per game on his own vs 6.8 and 1.7 clearances.

Hickey has had 17 center clearances on his own and laid more tackles and more 1%

In Marshall we may have a 2nd ruckman.
Play him for the rest of the season with Hickey.

Probably right but I'm not convinced Hickey is as bad as some say yet, the team has been playing terrible football this year and that never helps. He's been serviceable in most of the games I've seen and then he played one bad one and Richo drops him.

It’s funny, my match report of Longer at the Sandy vs Frankston the week before he came in copped a lot of criticism here...

At the time I said that despite being the dominant ruck, he offered little around the ground with the suggestion that there was little to indicate that he’d developed his game.

A few know it alls ripped in saying he was a physical beast that took 5 contested marks, got to contest after contest and was very physical...

Isn’t it weird that Longer could apparently play a game like that and then in the 3 games that followed in addition to the fact that he typically doesn’t play that type of game, completely fail at demonstrating those qualities again.

He's always going to dominate hit outs at VFL level he's a cut above in that regard for VFL but his ball in hand and around the ground work is to be honest not even VFL seconds standard.

What I find VERY hard to believe is that 2 people who watch football could actually think Longer is any good. I just dont think that is possible.. The only conclusion I can draw from that impossibility is that

We have 2 half ruckman. Longer competes and does provide a physical presence ( put Gawn on his butt a few times last week) but gives us nothing around the ground . Hickey is a better footballer, especially around the ground but provide minimal physical presence and at times you question his want to even compete. Put Longer' aggression to the contest with Hickey's around the ground skills and we would have a good ruckman.

Longer to Geelong, Hickey to Richmond and go get Lycett.
