These are player numbers that I can recall that played during the 1950’s I’d say from about 1954 onwards. In those days the guernsey numbers used to change a bit. Some players had the same number from when they started, others might get a number change in the middle of a season. I tried to recall the first ones I had seen play who had the number, not the more famous players who wore the guernsey a season later.

1. Les Foote
2. Brian Moloney
3. Bob Kupsch (? Spelling)
4. Ken (Chesty) Mulhall
5. Lester Ross
6. Allan Callow
7. Brian Walsh
8. Neville Linney
9. Roy Apted
10 Neil Roberts
11 Bill Stephenson
12 Harold Davies
13 ??????????
14 Bruce Phillips. (Hate leaving out Allan Jeans, however I saw Phillips in the number years before Yabby came along)
15 Bill Young
16 Verdun Howell
17 Frank Hanrahan
18. ?????? Walton
19 Eric Guy
20 Bud Annand............. my all time favourite. I nearly got expelled from school because of Bud -a story for another day!!!
21 Peter Clancy
22 ????????
23 Brian Muir
24 Lance Oswald
25 Keith Drinan............... the best exponent of the drop kick out from full back one could ever see, pin point accuracy.
26 ???????
27 Peter Bennett
28 Jim O’Brien
29 Bill Coady
30 Brian Gleeson
31 ????????? -may have been Ray Barrett (?spelling) but I may be wrong on this number.
32 Jeff/Geoff Jones
33 Lindsay Fox
34 ????????????
35 Graham Minihan
36 ??????????
37 Geoff Feehan
38 Milne McCook ??????? This is a real guess here
39 Ian Synman
40 ??????????
41 ???????????
42 ???????????
43 ???????????
44 Ken Kupsch (again spelling)

Not having much luck with the 40’s.

Took awhile but numbers and names of some of those I First saw wearing those numbers eventually came back. Not bad for so long ago........... but if you asked me what I had for dinner last night - I wouldn’t have a bl@@dy clue!!!!!

I’ve been mates with Harold Davie’s son for 33 years loris. Played footy against him in Cairns and we became friends thru both following the Sts. In later years Harold - a charming man - found our house for us thru his real estate business. I went to his funeral here on the GC in 2002 then the season after was priveleged to go to watch the Saints at Etihad as guests with his family when the club wore armbands for him.

Great Stevie, to know someone else rembers him..... even if you didn’t see him play. I always said that Robert Harvey modelled his hair style on Harold Davies hair style.........very 1950’s hair cut was the Harves’.

You and I the only ones to remember Bill Coady. I guarantee I’m the only person to have number 29 on his back in those days. Bill senior was a close family friend.

Your Dad would have been a colleague of Bill Coady’s father wouldn’t he Bernie Shakey? Years later in the late 1960’s Bill’s Dad, Chief Superintendent Coady was my Boss for a few months. A real gentleman, very proud of his boy.

Bill was one of a few policemen that played for our team in the 1950’s - Bud Annand, Allan Jeans, Bill Coady and Bruce McClennan. Come to think of it now, #31 might have been Bruce McClennan, not Ray Barrett.

Ray Barrett was no.28 in 1956 but switched to 31 during his second stint in 1958.

I remember ....
26 - as John Manzie
22 - Russell Reynolds (maybe wrong)
50 - Colin Carter (Rod ‘tilt’ was the swan)
18 - was and will always be the ‘Cowboy’ to me
8 & 36 - Elliott brothers
40 - BOG in the mud - Temay
10 - current poster big.... can answer that one
27 - much referred on this forum George Young
The most famous number 27 in StKilda's history was not George Young.

Try Barry Breen!
Yep, kicked a handy point in that number before switching to #4
Not quite Joffa. Went from 27 to 17. Famously bought a huge roar from the Moorabbin crowd when he pulled on the famous #4 mid-game in 1969 (post-Baldock).

Ad the doc at 4 ffs.
The thread is called Who do you remember. I don’t remember him because he was before my time. I guess I’m not (quite) as old as you. Ffs.

When I read this, I just wonder if any young supporters, or even the players, know of these numbers, whose footsteps they walk in. Like Lockett and Stewart are amongst the best of all time! Yet Barry Lawrence and Darryl Baldock wore the same numbers.

This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

Lots of fantastic memories in this thread.

Sadly, that's all we've got now.
