We largely picked Brett Voss because of his brother and he was an exceptionally good player for us. What a bargain he was.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

That was a great move. Agree with that.

Rest of draft starts in 10 minutes!

Hmm....

He was horrendous to start with.

Coach backed him and backed him and he got some confidence. Ended up being a very good and underrated player.

Why did we trade 26 for 36 and 46 ?
I'm not all over the points system.
I would have preferred keeping 26.
Can someone explain this?

ST KILDA concedes it didn't know the full extent of prized recruit Dan Hannebery's struggles with his body when it traded for him.

Now I understand
The Sydney West Coast swaps happened either side of the Blakey pick 10

North queue jumped to 8.
Pick 8 worth 1551 points but North only had to surrender 80% of that number = 1241points
They had stock piled picks 42, 47, 48, 55, 58
Pick 42 = 395
Pick 47 = 316
Pick 48 = 302
Pick 55 = 207
Pick 58 = 170
Total =1390
Surplus 149
I am not sure if they retain those 149 points for a late pick.
Pick 42 47 48 55 definitely go to back of draft.
Other picks move forward
Not sure what happens to 58

Sydney had stock piled picks 26, 33, 38, 39, 40.
Sydney don't want to lose their second round pick now 26 in a queue jump for Blakey
Sydney do an early deal with West Coast
Sydney's pick 26 (it will later become pick 29) for West Coast's 2019 3rd round pick.
Sydney now has picks 2019 WC 3rd round, pick 33, 38, 39, 40
Those picks become picks 2019 WC 3rd round , 34, 39, 40 and 41 because of North's queue jump

But the deal has second component after Sydney take Blakey, West Coast will trade their original pick 22 but which will now be pick 24 in return for Sydney's 2020 2nd round pick

Sydney queue jump to 10 .
Pick 10 worth 1395 points but Sydney only had to surrender 80% of that number = 1116points
They had stock piled picks 26, 33, 38, 39, 40
But due to North queue jumping and the West Coast trade these have become 2019 pick & picks 34, 39, 40, 41
Pick 34 = 542
Pick 39 = 446
Pick 40 = 429
Total = 1417
Surplus = 301

Now West Coast and Sydney complete the deal
Sydney sell their 2019 2nd round pick to West Coast in return for West Coasts original pick 22 that has now become pick 24 and will eventually become pick 25
Sydney also get pick 49 with the surplus.
Genius move by Sydney.

Now every pick later has been moved back 2 places but 5 late picks have been moved back as have 3 of Sydney's picks.

Now it is Collingwood's turn to queue jump at pick 13
They had stock piled picks 41, 44, 51, 57, 59, 60
These have become picks 43, 46, 54, 60, 62, 63
Pick 13 worth 1212 points but Sydney only had to surrender 80% of that number = 970 points
Pick 43 = 378
Pick 46 = 331
Pick 54 = 220
Pick 60 = 146
Total = 1075
Surplus = 105

It is complicated, the clubs have continuous update of their picks places and values on the night but it helps if the have a skilled mathematician like Sydney working with them.
Sydney moving their second round pick out of the way and then reinstating a second pick was clearly planned well in advance.

Luke Valente is still on the board. What a get he would be if he slipped to us. Unlikely, but you never know.

Edit: Just went to Freo.

Couple of really good ones gone now. I reckon Kieren Briggs will come on for GWS. A powerhouse.

Curtis Taylor and Jacob Koschitzke are still there. Tom McKenzie, too. Would be pleased with any of those three.

St kilda could have selected him if they didn't trade 26 for 36 and 46!
WHY would you trade away 26?
It make no sense to me at all.

Well, it didn't seem too bad at the time. And I wouldn't have thought Valente would be there at 26. What's actually really hurting us is all the clubs leaping ahead of us with the Academy bidding - our picks are getting pushed way back now.

Pick 41 - Jack Bytel. Good get. If we can get him fit, he'll be a player. Lots of character.

Just have to work through those back issues.

Definitely a slider...primarily due to his injuries. But he was speculated about as a top pick in 2017. Hopefully he comes good.

Quick Bios from elsewhere:
Knightmare's Phantom Draft - Pick 38
Height, Weight: 188cm, 82kg
Summary Profile: Powerful ball-winner who has struggled for much of 2018 with back complaints. One of the most prolific stoppage players in the draft pool.

Fox Footy's Phantom Draft - Pick 28
Clubs: Calder Cannons/Vic Metro
Position: Midfielder
Size: 189cm, 80kg
Bio: It’s been a frustrating season for the inside midfielder, who was sidelined with a nasty back injury. But Bytel has enough runs on the board to suggest he should be drafted. The contested ball winner is good at the stoppages and has the ability to win plenty of the ball. Was a member of the AFL Academy.

Yeah he can play.

Not the outside pace we are screaming for, but this is realistically the best available.

189cm.... big unit for a midfielder. Should suit today’s midfield set ups nicely.

We ended up taking Matthew Parker. Bit of a wild child, but had a great 2018 season in the WAFL. Explosive.

Pick 47 - Matthew Parker (South Fremantle)

The exciting 22-year-old forward has plenty of raw ability and would improve rapidly in an elite AFL system. Parker has slotted 24 majors in 15 games for the Bulldogs and has athletic traits that will no doubt turn recruiters' heads. He is a good size at 187cm, blessed with rapid speed, loves to lay a tackle (averaging four per match) and isn't shy jumping for a speccy either.

With Ben Long and Jade Gresham, we have some real spark in that department now.

Very disappointing to miss Jacob Koschitzke. He goes to Hawthorn at 52, two picks before I think we would have swooped at 54. All-Australian defender.
