Maybe we should consider playing him as a tall ruck rover - outside the F50.

At least he won't be bombing the ball into the F50 (unlike a couple of our established midfielders) - he's got an accurate and penetrating low kick.
Good call.
Move him to CHB.
Playing with the ball in front of him.
And helps plug the Carlisle/Roberton hole.

Much more likely to be running back blind with the flight at CHB. He is brave and doesn't know when not to go for the ball or check surroundings.

I could be wrong, but I think his head knocks are usually when he's going up against 3 or 4 players in the forward line, when hips, knees, arms and legs are flailing about and are more likely to collect him, or when he's lunging head-first to mark a wide ball.

You may be right about where it has happened specifically but I really cant see any rationale at this point, if the decision looks like he should retire, that will justify him ever setting foot on a footy field again.

If he’s less likely to be concussed playing a different position ...and Im suggesting a ruck rover type role, let’s say between wing and half forward, where he can get into space and be a linking, tall mobile player, with a penetrating kick - like a Tom Lynch (Adelaide) role.
Might be worth a try ... but it’s just a theory.

Sorry samoht, but I don't see Paddy as being mobile enough or having the endurance to play that type of role.

I actually think the saints look better without Paddy in the team.
If Marshall plays forward instead of Paddy and we have Pierce in the ruck then have two genuine rucks in the team.

Marshall is bigger, stronger and more versatile.

Jaxons, this is one time I hope you're not on the money. However, eight concussions in such a short period and often in situations where other players woukd unlikey be so affected suggests Paddy is at high risk of serious ongoing consequences. If it's over, I feel teeeu ly sorry for him. In the long run, though, it may be for the best

I am getting mixed reports on this.
Some people say he is announcing retirement as early as tomorrow, other convinced he is not and playing on.
I know I will be accused of sitting on the fence, just sharing what I have heard.
In summary, could go either way.

If he does retire (and surely he should), then I'm really sorry for him: it will be devastating for him.

But I have been convinced for quite a while that - even if he had been 100% fit - he wasn't going to make it. His attacking prowess has never looked sufficient to make up for his total inability to contribute when we don't have the ball. I believe that an "old school" forward can still make it in modern AFL, but they have to be an absolute A-grader. Paddy looks, at best, to be fair average quality at AFL level: which is not good enough in the high speed "total football" context in which the game is now played.

I realise I'm being harsh, but I think we've had enough of a look at him to know that this was almost certainly where his career was going. So it's probably in the best interests of both the club and Paddy for him to give up on his career and look for something else.

George on BF also has been quite a consistent ITK also indicating it’s likely both retire as early as tomorrow

Very sad if true

Thanks for sharing Jax and I have largely heard the same thing. The big issue with both Dylan and Paddy is the AFL's Insurers (players are actually contracted to the AFL via their legal agent i.e. the club). If the medical advice is negative and yet, the player still wants to play - the club is in a catch 22 as they almost cannot select them as the player would forfeit their right to a claim against the AFL for a career ending injury payout which is in turn, technically becomes a breach of care by the club. And Paddy and Dylan's contracts are both significant in terms of duration and value and hence, impact on TPP.

Pretty awful situation.

One has to imagine that there is at least something to this because surely... surely if retirement wasn’t in the conversation, the club would come out and say so

Was inevitable once it occurred. For both players. Imagine if either sustained a serious injury after this weekend? No-one would care whether the players insisted on playing, everyone would think that saints were reckless in allowing this to occur.

Time to move on I reckon. In hindsight, particularly with Paddy, this was always going to happen I reckon. A couple of his concussions have looked very light that 99% of AFL players would shrug off. Don't know what the issue is but you can't play a full contact sport and have that weakness.

As for Robbo - very sad but really if the tests come back stating certain things, then only a fool would play on or attempt to.

Pierce into the ruck. Marshall to CHB. Battle to FF. Wilkie to the third tall defender post. Lets move on. Best of luck to both Dylan and Paddy. Stay healthy.

A further update on this.
Roberton as I said earlier is now retired.
McCartin out indefinitely and getting external advice and testing on his brain independent from club.
In my opinion on what I’ve been told very unlikely to ever play again.

If this is the case, then it must be pretty devastating for Paddy and Dylan. The thing that's important is their health and wellbeing into the future.

Yes i know its about the players but the club can't take a trick - forever cursed

So Dempster Koby Roberton and maybe Paddy - playing careers ended all within one year due to exceptional circumstances
