Roo on Richo and season 2020

Post: # 1777926Post saynta »

From the Hun.

Saints, Richo must pass 'eye test': Riewoldt

St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt says his old club – and its coach – will be judged on effort this season with its glut of injuries not serving as an alibi for under-pressure coach Alan Richardson.

The Saints have endured a horror off-season. Last week defender Dylan Roberton (heart condition) announced he would take a year off, that coming on top of star defender Jake Carlisle's season-threatening injury and the uncertainty around the future of key forward Paddy McCartin (concussion).

Midfield dynamo Jack Steven only recently returned to training after also taking a break (personal issues), leaving the Saints' hopes of vaulting up the AFL ladder in doubt.

Herald Sun reporter JON RALPH last week wrote Richardson's task "just got a lot harder, but the least we can do in his year of living dangerously is judge him by realistic expectations."

Today, Riewoldt said the Saints still needed to show something and a judgement could "absolutely" still be made on his old club.

"The best game styles we've seen over the last few years have really rendered personnel irrelevant," he said on SEN.

"You want your best players playing, absolutely, but you can still show enough with the cattle that you're going to have out there …

"You can still see it, it's the eye test, it's the effort that the players are giving, it's the adherence to a good game style.

"You can only base any decision on what you see in front of you and if the players play great style and the players give great effort every week, the wins and losses will take care of themselves."

Doesn't Richo become our second longest serving coach this year? I think he's also got the lowest winning percentage of anyone to coach over 100 games. Not much will save Richo but wins or at the very least a lot of progress that looks very very obvious. I think the trigger clauses all set in this year and he can be sacked fairly easily. Poor performance will see board challenges and nothing brings the knives out like saving your own job.

Smart man is Roo.

If Richo's game plan is on we will win many more games than not regardless of injuries.

Injuries are no excuse.

This year we do not have an over-inflated opinion of where we are at.

Players are a lot more desperate. Everyone's careers are on the line. Makes a big difference.

Richo will overtake Grant Thomas as our second longest serving coach in round 14 this year.

Assuming we don't play finals, Richo will overtake Alan Jeans as our longest serving coach in round 3, 2029.

Jeans: 332 at 58.28%
Thomas: 123 at 51.63%
Lyon: 121 at 64.46%
Alves: 115 at 48.26%
Richardson: 110 at 34.55%

Fair call. Surprising coming from Roo. But fair enough.

Riewoldt clearly doubts the Richo game style and player effort
He’s not letting him off the hook nor should we
Bring effort show some structure give us at a minimum a decent approach into fwd 50 attack ffs and not long bombs and people might judge differently ......but judge they will.
There is much more than win/loss to determine outcomes

Its our equivalent of the BREXIT stalemate. Only the AFL might ask us to leave. Just treading water till we get a new coach and a talented selection panel. We have to win the first, surely, but try graphing the rest of the season and factoring in growing player disenchantment as the losses pile up. 2019: AR still coach and Newnes, Savage, Sinclair, and Lonie are all still in the best 22. Someone is taking the piss, surely. Suns are shortening.

Oh dear, so Richo if not sacked during this year easily becomes our second longest coach.....
