Kardinia Park - 20 Years Ago

Post: # 1805353Post Beno88 »

Saturday 5th June 1999

Geelong 16.12.108
St Kilda 18.10.118

We came from six goals down in the third quarter for a remarkable win. We kicked into the wind in the last term and were still 25 points down before piling on the last six goals. I still remember the crowd going nuts behind the goals when Ben Walton kicked the sealer. It was the only win I've ever witnessed at Geelong and it was a game I'll never forget. Andrew Thompson starred and Barry Hall was superb up forward.

Ironically it was the beginning of the end for that era. We sat third after that win, but went on to win just three more games and finished 10th. Watson only coached 5 more Saints wins after this game, but ironically is one of only two St Kilda coaches to have succeeded at Kardinia Park in the AFL era.

Enjoy the last quarter...

Nice...Loewe tap> Harvey LH handball> Trianidis acceleration, 3 bounces, casually and skillfully drops on to his right foot (left footer) cross bodied lob-pass to Brown. Wow..what skill was Trianidis!
..and what the hell happened to him and the rest of the team, after the boarding house pudding game against Hawthorn? I wonder if sports psychology 101 look at the Saints in that period?

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Gee sometimes you forget just how good Robert Harvey was.

That weak dog Garry Hocking ran through Robert Harvey at a stoppage, too. Harves was watching the ball as it was was thrown in the air when the weak dog ran across from the other side of the ball up to clean up Banger with the cheapest of shots.
(But I missed the game because I was with my then partner watching the latest Star Wars release at the cinemas.)

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

A game to be a proud Sainter.
I was there too.
Hocking ran right through Harves at a throw in just in front of the old Past players Stand.
Happened right in front of me.
Banger was killing it.

20 years ago ! Wow.
We're overdue.
I'll be there with a "reserved confidence" :D

I too have very vivid memories of the hit ... and the win. I recall being very excited on the drive home, unaware it was all about to unravel for Timmy and the team.

Still, those great wins stay strong in the memory.

By way of proving that point, and showing my age, I recall a day in the early 70s when we smashed them down there by 100 points .

I got a lot riding on this tonight. My kid has bet me a pack of footy cards that we’ll win.
