We may delist him if he doesn’t get an offer.
I think someone would pick him up as a DFA.

St Kilda may choose to offer him a much reduced contract.
He is a restricted free agent.
Any club could offer him a $1 contract and see if St Kilda are willing to match.

I think you will find that although he did take the field he did not "play" for most of those matches.

I'm putting forward a glass-half-full picture (seeing as nobody else will). He's an aerobic beast. Can we free Steele up by turning him into a tagger? (He'll need some hardcore tackling work in the pre-season.)

Re: Jack Newnes
Steele does an excellent job, shuts down or negates and gets the ball, it is his role, it is what separates him from Hannebury, Ross and Dunstan.
Newnes is depth at best unless he can play his best game 4 out of 5 games. No point in clogging our best 22 - 25 and stiffling any opportunity to develop our kids.
Halve that two year offer, he is still better value in 2020 than who we will pick in draft round 5 or round 6.

He played as a defensive forward against the Bulldogs and shut out Johannsen which helped us win that game.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Fri 11 Oct 2019 7:45amSteele does an excellent job, shuts down or negates and gets the ball, it is his role, it is what separates him from Hannebury, Ross and Dunstan.

No one is saying he hasn't played a very good game for StK. I want that to be the rule for a 150 game player, not the exception.longtimesaint wrote: ↑Fri 11 Oct 2019 7:58amHe played as a defensive forward against the Bulldogs and shut out Johannsen which helped us win that game.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Fri 11 Oct 2019 7:45amSteele does an excellent job, shuts down or negates and gets the ball, it is his role, it is what separates him from Hannebury, Ross and Dunstan.

I was meaning we have seen that he can play that role, maybe use him as a defensive forward or tagger and release Steele to be an attacking midfielder.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Fri 11 Oct 2019 8:31amNo one is saying he hasn't played a very good game for StK. Re: Jack Newnes
Fair enough Longtime but I'm not sure Steele is an attacking midfielder. He's a disciplined player that will bust his gut to perform his role for the club and pick up possessions.
Tagging a half back flanker is a licence to not get the ball, just make sure the HBF doesn't impact - he was great on JJ.
That's the problem with our midfield, none of Ross, Dunstan or Steele can be described as attacking. No Hannebury, no Steven only magnified that in 2019.

Re: Jack Newnes
Tagging role doesn't sound a bad idea to me - he has always been prepared to do the team thing. In fact that may be why his game has suffered - not really versatile enough to play all the positions that have been expected if him. Course he was ridiculed a long time on here for never laying a tackle so that'd have to change!

Re: Jack Newnes
Perhaps I am wrong, but I thought a DFA might play on minimum wage, were there is some expectation of a decent salary and tenure for a FA.ace wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2019 11:57pmWhy would someone wait to pick him up as a delisted ?Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2019 10:09pm We may delist him if he doesn’t get an offer.

Re: Jack Newnes
I don't understand the hate for Newnes.
Sure he is nothing more than a GOP but that doesn't mean he deserves the crap that is written about him.
FFS It's not his fault that there is no-one better that the coaching panel think should get a game ahead of him.

Re: Jack Newnes
St Kilda already made him and offer and as such under the rules he cannot become a DFA (otherwise all uncontracted players would become one which would get around the ability for clubs to match RFA offers). Also there is no compensation picks for DFAs.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 10 Oct 2019 10:09pm We may delist him if he doesn’t get an offer.

The only options for players who have been made an offer, and who are uncontracted are:
- not accept the offer and to be traded
- not accept the offer and to be delisted and nominate in the draft
- to retire
- to accept the offer and play on at StKilda

Re: Jack Newnes
Jack has upside and most have forgotten how most people viewed him say before 2016 -17 where you would probably say 2016 was his best year for the club. He's 186cm and a great overhead mark but has had limited opportunity to showcase that side of himself, when he has played forward he's shown he can grab the ball in the air similar to how Members secures a mark. He's also shown he's an accurate kick for goal. When he was up and about he was also good at getting the ball inside 50 so he can get the ball but what happens after that sometimes let's him down. Coincidentally his high i50 count coincided at time when the F50 structure was working better. It could be if he is still at the club next year that he has a light bulb moment and really applies himself as a result of this current reality check, it happens. The big question is where does he fit in, my guess is somewhere around the half forward mark to act as the tallish guy that can run and mark the ball that is either being kicked by the opposition over the forward defensive zone or the forward link up player to distribute to the i50 ala Lynch from the Crows.
