I might be wrong, but I think the rule involves trading out future first rounds in consecutive years, eg. if we trade out 2020 first round, we would not be allowed to trade out 2022 first round next year.
There are various rules.
One rule is.
Clubs need to have used of at least two first-round picks in the previousfour-year period.
We have used one first rounder last year, and 2 the year before that.
So we can not use a first round picks in this year and next year if we wish.
Therefore 2020 we had 3 picks in previous 4 years
Therefore 2021 we had 3 picks in previous 4 years
Therefore 2022 we had 1 picks in previous 4 years and will need to use a first round pick unless we apply for dispensation.

Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
Don't go Blake!
We want you here.
Let them trade a future pick -- whom we have no idea of what they'll offer.
We know Blake offers class and poise, and with a little more luck, midfield dominance.
Don't go!!

If we trade Acres, that will give us what we need for Jones..
Also means that Dogs will have to cough up a fair price for Bruce. Or that we can keep Bruce
Also means that Cats may do a little better for Steven.

well, i agree that would be a little bit interesting if we can call the bluff on Bruce.

Yeah, I'd rather lose Acres than Bruce. Acres could be enough to mean we get Jones.

That’s a reasonable trade
As long as the Hill deal is not for 10 and next years first
Can't happen our first rounder is SAFE.
This deal sold our 2020 3rd rounder.
That means we can still sell our 2020 2nd and 4th rounders but not our 1st rounder.
A club can sell either their future 1st rounder or any number of their later future rounders but can't do both.
Only one exception - in the case of AFL corruption.
Hawthorn and GWS did a deal for O'Meara in which Hawthorn gave GWS their future 2nd rounder after they had already traded their future 1st rounder to St Kilda.
The trade details were submitted so late that they were not viewed until after the deadline so could not be amended.
The AFL had two choices: Allow their rules to be deliberately broken OR enforce the rules and disqualify the trade - consequence would have been O'Meara out of contract, goes into the preseason draft and lands at Essendon.
Gold Coast gets absolutely no compensation for the loss of O'Meara.
Despite ACE registering a protest within the first hour into at least two newspaper comments sections, the media refused to even mention the issue themselves.
A week later in aside to another story, there was mention of an admission from the AFL that they had made a "mistake" but would take no action.
All media personalities refused to even debate the issue.
The prostitutes in the media did an excellent cover up for the corrupt AFL.
thought the afl came up with a loophole after the event. you can trade both IF you can trade back a future 1st or 2nd rounder elsewhere.

St Kilda receives Dougal Howard, Paddy Ryder, a first-round pick (currently No.10) and a future fourth-round selection
FROM: PORT ADELAIDE
Port Adelaide receives two first-round picks (currently No.12 and No.18) and a future third-round selection
FROM: ST KILDA

Exactly. Swap what we get for Acres for Jones and then the Dogs can cough up if they really want Josh Bruce.

Some people on this forum have been pretty vocal in their criticism of our footy club in this trade period.
So, to all those critics please take a moment to reflect on this.
We traded pick 6 and a selection in the 50s, for two players, one of them a former AA and the other, in the minds of some, a future AA and pick 10.
That is an outstanding outcome and we are not done.
So we dropped from #6 to #10 for Howard and got Ryder for #59.
Looks like the deal with GWS was a waste of time.
Howard and Ryder make us better if we get Hill and Jones but lose Acres. With Howard coming in who can play forward and back and and at 199cm can pinch hit in the ruck which really makes him better than Acres, especially because we are also bringing in players for the midfield which is where Acres would have been restricted to next season based on the fact all key forward/back/ruck positions are well and truly fully stocked.
I was hoping we could keep Acres but the more I think about it I think in hindsight Acres was a player we could lose.

How so?
1/ It spelled out to Freo in no uncertain terms that they needed to be realistic in what they get for Hill
2/ It has allowed us to pounce on Howard without needing to have first traded Bruce to the Dogs.
Without the deal we could still be sitting on our hands till the last hour of trades with Freo demading way over for Hill, Port not being willing to trade Howard and with the Dogs only willing to give us pick 32 for Bruce.
We have forced the pace and the momentum is all our way.

Good trade - so we've got 2 players and still have pick 10 plus some 3rd/4th round exchanges - not sure why PA did this deal??
They did suggest Howard look around and he was obviously popular. His bidding pick value also increased with Port wanting 2 round 1 picks. I can only assume they are looking to duplicate some of the more recent good talent picks they have made in the draft!
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.
You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

In - Pick 10, Future 4th Round
Out - Pick 12, Pick 18, Future 3rd Round
- Effectively Pick 18 for Howard
- Ryder a swap of 3rd and 4th round picks
- Slight upgrade from 12 to 10
I sure to hell hope Howard is worth Pick 18....
Me too but I believe he has something given the popularity. Hes tall, relatively fast, good hands and actually led the team in 1 game this year so that's a big winner for me as Leadership is something we have needed to boost IMO.

I reckon he is...
200cm swingman with 3 or 4 years of development into him.
Fast and a good Mark and good ground skills.
I reckon he is a great pick up.
Kane Cornes was ropeable.
Nice looking backline taking shape
Dougs at FB, Carlisle at CHB
3rd tall options Wilkie, Battle, Austin, and maybe Roberton
Small/Mid sized options in Geary, Webster, Savage, Coffield, Paton
Could be something or could be nothing wild cards are Marsh and Joyce
Battle is the interesting one. Has a beautiful kick on him and would be wasted at Sandy but may not be a lock down back or up forward.
Life is never more fun than when you're the underdog competing against the giants.
In the last six years, we have not been able to develop a range of players up to their full potential, e.g. Billings, Gresham, Sinclair, Lonie, Acres, McCartin, etc. etc.
We get some mature aged recruits/guns, and then we need to fix the Development side of our Club.
I think we'll make the top eight next year, with the trades we have made, but it ultimately comes down to the development of King and Bytel.
Doesn't work, limbo for the next 10 years.
