Oh what a problem to have - an abundance of riches - and it is beginning to sound like a genuine abundance - it will be good to be in a position that the 'kids' can learn their skill and have it razor-sharp before being plunged in the deep end of AFL Life

Sounds like the players in the senior side won't get a game next match.

Re: Reserves scratch match v Carlton
This is excellent news. With injury worries for Jones and Hannebery, and Dunstan out for 12 weeks, it is great to see Byrnes and Bytel looming as genuine midfield options. Likewise Sinclair is putting pressure on the small forwards .
In that report 17 Saints are mentioned, including 2 who played for Carlton! The only 6 on the list not mentioned were the injured Jones and Dunstan, plus Webster, Roberton , Clavarino and Bell. I wonder how many of those 4 played.

How much notice do you take out of a scratch match, when you have to give the opposition players to even up the numbers.Sure you want your guys to play well but makes you wonder how that equates to senior selection.Unfortunately thats all we have to go on

Re: Reserves scratch match v Carlton
Interesting isn't it, I am not sure "form" is the main aim of these matches. It would be more about running out a game, having their bodies experience tackles, knocks and bumps.
At some point through the season players will be called up so their bodies need to be ready. Selection, I imagine, will be based more on training sessions, discipline and attitude, especially once in their hub.

You’d think both teams would be going pretty hard to impress. Standard might not be great but the attack on the footy would be fierce.

Re: Reserves scratch match v Carlton
Good to see Bytel and Byrne’s as the headline again.
Byrne’s and Hind I suspect will be pressing for Hanneberys spot if Jones doesn’t come up.
Always good to see a win.
We got flogged by Richmonds reserves last week so still not sure how carried away we can get with our depth.

Re: Reserves scratch match v Carlton
When they next play a scratch, instead of making up numbers as the Saint did for Carlton, they should play the 5-5-5, 15 players aside format.
That way, each group [backs, mids and forwards will get match time that equates realistically to the 18 aside set up.
ie 5 backs, [no back pocket]. 5 mids, [wings out of the square at the bounce, 3 mids inside, centreman, ruck, rover]. Then 5 forwards [no forward pocket]
It's a well tried format played in juniors and many minor leagues where they don't have the numbers.

Carlton only had 14 to start with I think.and they played 16 a side.St Plugger wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:06pm When they next play a scratch, instead of making up numbers as the Saint did for Carlton, they should play the 5-5-5, 15 players aside format.

Re: Reserves scratch match v Carlton
Yes, I understand that was the case, but for a realistic match practice or otherwise, the 5-5-5, 15 aside set up in practice/reality, is more alike to the 6-6-6, 18 aside set up than what the 6-4-6, 16 aside set up is.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:09pmCarlton only had 14 to start with I think.and they played 16 a side.St Plugger wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:06pm When they next play a scratch, instead of making up numbers as the Saint did for Carlton, they should play the 5-5-5, 15 players aside format.

Makes sense in theory perhaps, except for the extra space at centre bounce maybe.St Plugger wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:17pmYes, I understand that was the case, but for a realistic match practice or otherwise, the 5-5-5, 15 aside set up in practice/reality, is more alike to the 6-6-6, 18 aside set up than what the 6-4-6, 16 aside set up is.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:09pmCarlton only had 14 to start with I think.and they played 16 a side.St Plugger wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:06pm When they next play a scratch, instead of making up numbers as the Saint did for Carlton, they should play the 5-5-5, 15 players aside format.

The old VFA used to play 16 a side with no wings.St Plugger wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:17pmYes, I understand that was the case, but for a realistic match practice or otherwise, the 5-5-5, 15 aside set up in practice/reality, is more alike to the 6-6-6, 18 aside set up than what the 6-4-6, 16 aside set up is.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:09pmCarlton only had 14 to start with I think.and they played 16 a side.St Plugger wrote: ↑Sun 05 Jul 2020 11:06pm When they next play a scratch, instead of making up numbers as the Saint did for Carlton, they should play the 5-5-5, 15 players aside format.

So the key question is do Leo Connolly and Sam Alabakis both have to go into 14 day quarantine now?

Oh of course, fraternising!. Luckily the rest of our team only played contact sport against them.
