Getting rid of him cost us at least one flag, biggest trading c**k up ever, apparently Yabby didn't like his lifestyle choices!
Second biggest blunder was Lovett in Ball out.
Tossing up between Hannabery and Freeman for the bronze and based on last couple of weeks Hill might also be up there!

Whiskers, this deserves a thread of its own. Voting style, perhaps Sainter Dad can arrange it. A 5 to 1 of trade / draft selection - swap in our history. The Stewart one is a contender.

Useful keyboardist. I suppose Jeans had to make a stand but he may have been handy in 71 Grand Final.

In the post 2000's Lovett was the gold medalist, butt average footballer, s*** bloke, no training ethic who had one gift - elite speed but FU else.

Another shocker was the nepotism trade, our first rounder for Fergus " SOCEO" Watts.

The trade for Tom Lee was a shocker, and Mc Evoy not shaping up to well either.

Quite liked Tom Lee, but were other team’s looking to use top draft picks on him? McEvoy, had finally come good after a lot of ordinary games so let’s flog him off.

Fun fact (for those that don’t want to neck themselves, turn away now) ... Fergus Watts (14 & 17) is one of only two AFL players who have had a club use their first round pick on securing their services.

The other is ... Barry Brooks (15 & 6)

Classic Saints 🤦🏻‍♂️

Brooks was actually 6 & 31 - shocking either way

As it was we didnt miss out on much with 6 anyway - Salopek, Mackie, Luke Brennan, Hamish MacIntosh, Jason Laycock, Jason Winderlich, Jay Schulz, Byron Schammer, Daniel Bell, Nicholas Smith, Stephen Gilham, Cameron Faulkner, Kris Shore, Troy Selwood, Will Minson, Bo Nixon - all taken from 6 to 21

Apart from Goddard, Wells & McVeigh the 2002 draft was putrid - maybe the worst

Edit - sorry Matt - did you mean that 2 clubs have used their first pick to secure their services?

Watts - Adelaide with pick 14 and then Saints with pick 17
Brooks - Port with pick 15 and then Saints with pick 6

Yes - that's what I meant. In the case of Brooks - we sent our Pick 6 and 31 (to use on a ruckman who'd been drafted with Port's pick 15 and played ZERO games for them in his single season there!!) . Port used 31 to get Byron Pickett (who played in a flag) and then used 6 on Salopek.

Funnily enough - Salopek was a massive St Kilda fan as a kid and is now back in Vic and a member of one of the Saints Coterie groups.

Lovett not playing the 2010 GF cost us a flag.

Watts and Brooks were both destroyed by injury making these trades look bad.

WHAT?!?!?!? Have you lost your mind?

We traded our pick 12 to GWS for Tom Lee and picks 24 & 43. Pick 12. FFS! Is that your definition of "bugger all"?

The only thing worse than wasting pick 12 on Tom frikkin' Lee was then using 24 and 43 on Nathan Wright and Josh Saunders.

Kill. Me.

Take the names out of it and 12 for 24 and 45 is equivalent to giving up about pick 62.

If you do want to take into account the players taken with the picks, maybe you can tell us all about the long and successful career of Kristian Jaksch.

Lovett had nothing to do with that loss. If anything it was a credit to the Club to make that GF despite the fact we drafted him.

Ball & Max at Collingwood cost us that flag. Collingwood's defence was a colander prior to 2010. They moved the ball methodically and accurately (something they had trained for a couple of seasons to do, they still do the same today) what they didn't know to do was defend. Don't you find it odd their 2010 defence was remarkably like St Kildas?

You won't find that in the Patient Ox's self fulfilling autobiography.

Actually, traded pick 12 for Tom Lee for picks 24 and 45. Traded out 45 later for 43 & 40 in the Jamie Cripps trade. Draft Value difference between pick 12 and 24 & 45 is 136 points or pick 61 - not much difference.
The only standout around pick 12 was BRODIE GRUNDY at pick 18. Who would we have picked? There were a few duds in that region.

The real issue as you mention was use of the picks for Nathan Wright & Saunders. Wasn't too much around those picks, but could have had Tim O'Brien or Kamdyn McIntosh for pick 24.

Lovett was not the answer or the difference. I'm more than happy that reasons beyond a single flog of a bloke would have made the 2010 flag ours.

Just like I firmly believe Robert Harvey would have been the difference in 2009, not Ben Cousins.
