Analysis of tactics against Port

Post: # 1855801Post Saint Mick »

Thought some people might find this piece interesting - it goes into a bit of depth on how we beat the Power at the stoppages on the weekend.

It was written by a mate of mine who was due to take up a role with the Swans analytics team before the shutdown, very bright footy brain!

thanks for the link!

Ratts also used the words "this is the blueprint for how we want to play" haha

Bring that sort of gameplan against the Swans, and we'll have a great chance to reverse recent history against our nemesis.
Swans are a bogey, we seem to run them into form all the time.
Last time we beat them was 2013? It certainly was a long time ago

Thanks for posting. Super interesting. Would love more of this analysis. Helps me to understand the chess match going on out there.

I think you may find that Ratt’s analytical resource is top drawer - and it is a strength of the Coach hence the focus

Meetings upon meetings analysing and questioning from straight after the game and continuing the next day and the next et al

Who said ruck tap work wasn't important, especially when up against lone rookie?!

Looks like Hinkley may have underestimated saints midfield a bit by sticking to his tactic of having his wings free at stoppages then taking too long to react.

Nice piece.

Top notch analysis is useless without guys who can pick the ball up cleanly, time their run to support in numbers, handball and kick accurately, absorb a tackle and understand the space around them.
I'm stunned by the improvement shown in these areas against Port and shocked by the failure to identify guys over the last 3 weeks, who clearly don't possess those skills.
This is a great piece of work.

These aspects are all what Sinclair is good at.

One thing the analysis showed was how we adjusted against Port's adjustments.

It would be fantastic to have a similar analysis of the North, Freo and Pies games. I am sure our coaches and analysis guys will have done it.

With this analysis, what also shone through too is how in this game that we were so reliant on the directional tapwork of Paddy. This help give our midfield the edge.

Freo with Darcy done we should have dominated the ruck, but did not.
Against the Pies Grundy destroyed us (though much of our team were pretty poor)
Against North, Goldstein had the edge.

Over the seasons there has been much debate over the value of rucks, and are they important or not. When you have elite mids then the value of a winning ruck to one's team is not as great. But when you have a so-so midfield such as we have at present then the importance of a winning ruck is much greater.

A very interesting inside look at footy today. The old sayings - "see football, get football" and "you don't need brains to play footy," are now as ancient as Stonehenge.

Still, we need very good players to execute the strategies properly, as well as adjusting from quarter to quarter.
