And if:
Kane Williamson spuns his bat;
Boon and Smith touched each pad;
Davey Warner undoes his gloves and does them up;

whilst the ball was coming down the pitch would you expect them to be successful?
This is the point - do that if needed - then get to business and stop the ‘idiosyncratic behavior’ once they begin the actual activity they are participating in - in the case of the goal kicking - once they start their approach - I would actually say beforehand they should get the ball ‘right’ then commence their walk in to kick - the ball spinning should be done by the 10 second mark of the initial 15 seconds they get

Spot on to a lame argument.

You can be shown a technique and be taught that technique, it is only once it works for you can it be committed to rote learning, 10,000 repeats of the same action.

Pretty hard to spin the bat when the ball is coming down the pitch?

You only get half a second to hit the ball?!

He spins it as they are running into bowl.

and King doesn’t spin the ball as his about to kick it, he spins it as he is walking in

Personally I wouldn’t, don’t feel the need to

But Jayden Stephenson does it, and he kicks it well… might work for some?

Is it the main problem with Kings action
No
It’s him laying back on the kick

Again it has to be asked, why are you arguing this? Shite examples that had nothing to do with kicking a football. I would not be hanging my hat on Jayden Stephenson.

Did Plugger or Dunstall or Ablett or Quinlan or Beasley or Heatley or Hudson or Young or McKenna or Wade twirl the pill as they walked in?

None of your cricket examples were still.doing their idiosyncrasies as the bowler hit the crease. Give up that cr@p B.M.. This is the money shot.

I would actually attest to seeing someone flip the ball with only 2 paces left before kicking it - needless to say it was not successful and I lost my tiny little mind

The mechanics of his kicking action (laying back, not kicking through it)

The psychological effect of Goalkicking

Are the ACTUAL issues

I don’t think he should spin the ball, but it’s not the reason he misses

Worrying about the wrong thing,

This notion of ‘just kick like plugger’ is ridiculous

NO I don't think it is worrying about the wrong thing - and why are we talking specifically about Max King ?- its about the coaches giving the players ( all of them) a routine to kick a goal that includes things like confidence in your ability to execute and a 'cookie cutter' plan - ie something that is practiced and easily replicated when the time comes to shoot for goal - they don't need to be clearing their mind with idiosyncratic behaviour up until the point of kicking if they have a routine that makes sense and they are confident in

That routine is their idiosyncratic behaviour

Sport had taught me a lot of things over the years

The most poignant would be that everyone is different and what works for one athlete doesn’t work for another.

There was an old school thinking that we warmed up as a team, we have the same methodology and do the the team thing.

These days
We look at the individual and how they perform best within the team.
They don’t all train the same, they don’t prepare for a game the same, they don’t warm up the same.

Each player is different
And the key is to get them doing what works for them

Currently King is kicking poorly
Some of the problem is mental, he’s worried about missing
Some of it is technique - he nurses the ball and doesn’t kick through it.

In golf, the slightest bit of deceleration in your swing ends in a bad result. People decelerate when they are worried about outcome. It’s why bunker shots can be difficult for some.

He’s an average player, but I’ve always found Mason Cox a very reliable kick for goal inside 40m. He has a very simple action, obviously learnt it much later in life than most AFL players.

Confidence is an amazing thing

When you’re thinking about goals rather than being worried about missing - it’s just allows you to relax and be natural

His first shot at Goal was from outside 50
It did 2 things
It was a no pressure shot - not expected to kick it every time
It made him kick THROUGH the ball

Therefore he accelerated through the ball and the kick had more energy - less likely to fade or mis kick

I couldn’t GAF if he twirled the ball on his finger Jacko style

If he stays over the footy and kicks it with some real momentum

And has BELIEF in himself!

Not during his approach - he settled - laces between his left thumb and forefinger - right hand slightly higher - and had a fixed and steady approach to kicking.

I don't give a Royal if he does hand stands BEFORE he settles - but once he settles and begins his run up - please do not frig with the position of your hands
