Jack Hayes to .........

Post: # 1944748Post Devilhead »

Full Back

Great Size (6,4), mobile, can jump, take a mark, is aggressive, would likely be a better option than Darragh Joyce as he has that advantage of having natural football ability

Steven May is similar height ..... McCartin a forward has moved back and is doing alright

It would free up Howard and allow him to play that CHB interceptor role ..... spoken about in other threads

Trying to think outside the box

Thoughts?

Playing Howard, Battle, Wilkie and Joyce would make us too tall and slow down back.

Would make it even harder for Highmore to get in. Who I think is going to be very good.

With Ryder coming in, does Hayes hold his spot?
He certainly deserves a spot on form, but as the OP suggests, unless he can be a starting forward or defender, he mightn't make it.

CHF for me. Guy is workhorse will provide lots of leading options. Can take a grab, good field kick, applies good tackle pressure.
Release Membrey as the 3rd tall.
King plays deep.

We've got injuries galore and yet now we have a selection dilemma in Hayes if Ryder is fit and/or we want to play Sharman.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Is Hayes any slower than Darragh Joyce?

Personally Sharman should be playing at CHF as he would provide a forward marking alternative and foil to King and I would think he is a better natural forward than Hayes ..... still befuddled as to why he isn't playing after the promise he showed last year

As mentioned if Ryder comes back in then Hayes will make way unless he can fill another position ie : Full Back where there is a gap given Howard maybe better being released from that position.

Other alternative is whether Hayes could play as an inside mid?

Like it. Structurally we need someone strong and physical down there. It will release Marshall to play as a follower or first ruck depending on Paddy’s availability.

I was going to suggest CHB for Hayes if Battle didn’t turn his form around, but that may be now off the table for a while, particularly as Joyce seems quite capable if needed.

Any case, I’d hate to see Hayes miss for “team balance” reasons. IMO you get good players in one way or another.

spot on he would be a great CHF but can play back if needed think he did that in the SANFL as well.
Would also take pressure of King.
Makes spot in team competitive with Sharman competitive is a great think same when Bytel gets back.
Should play butler as midfield or HBF he has the pace and could break lines would be much more effective

I saw Joyce differently
For me he was terrible in the first half, way too loose
My thoughts were papers stamped
Maybe I missed something

I don't understand why when we have a player produce an excellent game in a particular position we suddenly want to move him to fill a hole in another position.

To my knowledge Hayes has never played in a key defensive position in any standard of football. I could be wrong but he was drafted as a mobile forward who can pinch hit in the centre and around the ground.

Joyce ended the match all square with his opponent on Sunday IMO. I actually could not see Howard doing any better last Sunday.

Sharman appears the victim of a poor pre season. Hopefully a valuable lesson.

Could we go with:

Butler King Sharman
Membrey Hayes Higgins

Good marking options
Membrey plays as High HF
Hayes rucks in F50
Nightmare for opposition for kickouts

That would be my preferred forward line. Sharman can be interchangeable with one of Wood or Billings depending on form.

Sometimes in the box is best.

ie Battle to CHB forced by necessity and had a great year. Despite that he was moved all over the shop by Rats wanting him as winger and other roles

Hayes prior to joining us has played very good football as a forward and as a follower. He has in two games looked ok in this role with us.

We know has dose not have burst speed, which could make him a liability down back unless you play him as a spare man floater role where he would probably go well as he can read the play, But he can do this as part of his follower role.

Keep playing him as a forward/follower.

Would get burnt on the lead playing as a key back. I'd be interested in seeing him try out in the Battle/Wood wing role since he seems to be a good reader of the play and might be able to get involved more than those two.

Plonk him at chf and, if Paddy is playing, Marshall can share it with him or play as a follower or a kick behind play.

Can’t have

Marshall, Ryder, Hayes, King, Membrey all in the same team

One MUST be left out

Hayes is VERY undersized as a ruckman
