I agree totally, Devilhead. For all the rubbish that all of us post from time to time on this forum , there is a collective wisdom to be found here, reflecting that we love the club ( perhaps aside from a few mischievous interloping posters ) , have seen so many games, have lived through so many coaches and administrations and have a feel for what works - and what does not - for our club. In that wisdom , we can collectively stand outside the bubble of the club and get a better perspective than those living in the vortex have. The contract extension for Brett Ratten is a classic example. There was absolutely no justification for pulling that trigger - it is not as if other clubs were about to swoop. Yet those inside the club saw some perceived pressure, panicked … and here we are.

This group of players are no longer playing for the club or the coach. Surely there has to be significant questions asked of the coaching group??? I wonder if the f....ts in charge of this club even consulted the players before the extended the clowns contract?

This is as bad as a coaching effort that trumps even the Richardson & Watters eras, its so poor its scary really....
We can talk lists
We can talk game plans
But tonight saw a side at qtr time who looked completely spiritless
Like they are no longer buying what’s being sold from coaches
Make no mistake player clean out urgently needed
But. Coaching clean out also required
If we were serious about winning a flag then we’d acknowledge we are no closer to a flag than north
I bet in panick ….they’ll run out and sign a De Goey as if that’s gonna right this train wreck
I genuinely like Brett Ratten , nice guy but he’s not the answer and should go
He should never have been extended
The gross mismanagement from the Board to allow this needs to be called out and people need to lose their jobs
This can’t be swept under the carpet

When are you going to learn

It’s the team - not the coach!

Put Brett Ratten in charge of the Kangaroos they’d be 1 win

Put him in charge for f Melbourne they’d be 13 wins

Put him in charge of Stk 9 wins

We are a middling list with an average coach

Business Management 101. If you were responsible for employing the CEO don't be there soon after the appointment when he's sacked.
Only reason for the extension. CYA 101.

I completely agree.

Out list stinks. We have some okay players we’ve brought in but we seriously can’t draft for peanuts. In fact, our drafting has been utterly shocking since the early 00s. We were better when we had Beveridge doing the job on his own. Trout, and all the ****heads then and since, have been absolutely contemptible.

FMD, who in their right mind would take McCartin over Patracca? It’s brain dead decisions like that which have left us with the cobbled together bunch of misfits masquerading as a football team. Even the current bonehead is taking roughies with first draft draft picks. Totally hopeless.

The truly unfortunate thing is this is going to take years to fix …

Again when are you going to get with the program…???
The list has holes we all know that
Webster
Butler
Higgins
Wood
Paton
Jones

All very ordinary footballers
But the side is not even trying - 11 tackles in a half tells u that
FFS we have a mediocre game plan that as King Dunstall and others noted that rewards cheap possessions out the back
We don’t reward genuine pressure that’s why guys like Butler keep getting games
Player effort and turning up to play is on the coach
We’ve lost 5 out of 6 slid from 8-3 and this team is no longer playing for the coach
He should go
ALONG with a clean out of mediocre players

I think in a slightly subtle way he was blaming the players.

Looking at Brett tonight, this coaching gig is not doing him any favours.

You gotta nail your first and second round picks - critical!!!!

Melbourne
Gawn, Viney, Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver, Pickett, Jackson

They trade well
Lever, May, Brown, Langdon

Have role players to support stats
Neal Bullen, Sparrow, Harmes

We have 1 star - Steele

4 very good players - Marshall, Sinclair, Wilkie, Membrey

Our early picks
Ross - Very good Role player
Billings - Role player
Dunstan - Gone
Acres - Gone
McCartin - Gone
Goddard - Gone
McKenzie - Role player
Gresham - Inconsistent not fully developed
Long - Role Player
Coffield- Injured
Clark - Injured
King - Not developed
Bytel - Injured

Trade
Hannebery- Bust (overpaid)
Hill - gave up too much (overpaid)
Howard - ok
Ryder - Good
Jones - OK
Butler - Role Player
Higgins- Role player
Crouch - good but role player

We have drafted, traded and built a middle of the road list

We have an average coach

And we’ll be better in a few years or the wheels will completely fall off

Must get DeGoey and Amon
Must have three picks inside the first two rounds
Must complete 1 trade

4 players must come into our best 22

Brett has clearly lost the group, not that they are a great group;
the group has some really really dumb players and some with with pea hearts, some both, but he cannot even get them to tackle and follow team rules.
That is poor. He has to go with half the team.
Enough of this absolute rubbish.
Did Hill and NWM play after half time?
Saw the presser, Brett has nothing

Yep those bemoaning it’s purely all of a sudden the list (and that’s part of it) totally ignore the lack of effort, cohesion and clear discipline to apply a structured game plan
The players do not care you can see it

So no Naughton ... Bruce held to 3 possessions ..... against one of the worst backlines in the league

And we lose by 5 goals

Not sure if there is anything further to be said

Must have occurred more than 20 times. Doggie first to a loose ball, we commit 3 to the ball winner who then releases to a team mate running past free.
That's been their stamp for ages. Slick extraction from stoppage and contested footy. Where we got smashed last night.
From the opening bounce. So disappointed.
Another schooling for Ratts. Another example of being out coached.

Put Voss in charge of the Blues and they will still only win 8 games. Oh wait!

Better coaching will improve a team.

It is not just players, and it is not just coaching. And it is also not just those two factors.

It's just a crap club with a massive debt that is so unattractive to players at other clubs, players just come to the club to park it in resort mode and pick up their pay checks. We don't like to admit it but we are different version of North. Will never amount to anything other than the occasional excursion to the middle of the ladder.

To those lamenting the lack of a game plan, I say this.
Any game plan relies on two things.
1. Get your hands on the ball.
2. Execute the basic skills.

We didn't do either of those in the first three quarters last night.

Our defence actually stood up pretty well given the onslaught of entries.

When we did get the ball back, we turned it over either on the half back line or the middle of the ground. We tried to go inside and through the middle but lacked the skills to hit targets. Too often we kicked to a small bloke in an outnumber.
Let's face it, we are nowhere near as good as we think we are. Our talent is not up to scratch.
We don't have a genuine link man between defence and attack. No genuine tall target to kick to from the half back line. I think a cloned Membrey or Battle would help.

There is a good and bad thing with Higgins...He is a very smart forward. He's one of the only ones that moves and presents as a target. But he's not a target unless he's 20m in the clear. He's too small to be kicking to in a contest.
Our tall forwards , especially King don't have the same forward craft smarts as Higgins. Milne used to do the same thing but he was surrounded by genuine smart forwards.

Is Ratts story that "we went into our shell" a euphemism for "we don't care about the fans or the club, we've got our contracts so why spend money on deodorant when we don't have to raise a sweat"? Seriously, Ratts has run out of excuses and to say that we lost when Seb wasn't available in the engine room is suggesting that he has trained specific people in specific roles and we have no depth. The frustrating part is we all know that the team is better that that and regardless of their feelings toward Ratts they should be playing for the fans, the team and personal pride. No pay packets this week. Ratts sat in the box all night and didn't get down to the boundary like his opposite number.
One team wanted to win, the other team were indifferent.
One coach had a plan, the other didn't.
One team bought effort, the other team didn't.

So all of a sudden after 8-3 we are a bottom 4 skilled side??
Who picks n chooses when to give effort???
Think you’re making excuses for poor coaching ..
