Tim Membrey appreciation thread

Post: # 1972052Post Templar »

Just want to put out there how highly I rate Tim Membrey as a St Kilda player.

For me he has writ his name in the book and I hope that he goes on to have a long career at the club.

Stand out feature is how he continues to run and present for four full quarters. Whether its his fitness, sheer will or both, there were many games early this year where a punt on him for a last quarter goal was a very good bet. (Only screwed up when the coach started moving him back late in games to bolster defence)

Sure he has missed some set shots but he is not alone there, not only players at the Saints but players across the AFL seem to miss set shots regularly. He nails them too. Gotta love the characteristic jump and mark too.

The vision of Tim Membery running, presenting, selfless acts, team player ethos etc. Totally committed to 100% full effort for four quarters every game deserves serious acknowledgement and kudos. And I won't hear a bad word about him.

Congrats on the 150 dude.

His work rate is 1st class & for his size does an incredible job as our second tall forward & as fiery said great set of hands & is often called on to go back at the end of quarters to sure up the backline . All in all acquired for nothing has been a fantastic pick up IMO

About time we got one back from the swans. They have been stealing our forwards for long enough.

There is a lot to like but he is continually guilty of holding the ball up after taking a mark up the field allowing for opposition players to get back .... takes an age to make a decision and invariably it ends up being a kick to congestion

Sorry but had to be said

Misses far too many set shots.
Holds up play and cannot hit a leading player.
It usually rebounds.
Disappointing and deflating, more often than not

Absolute selfless foot solider for many years now. I am still astounded some on here wanted him dropped this year.
He is a 64.7% kick for goal ( yes stats don't include out on the full )
He is all about team and whatever the coach/ team need he delivers.

All players have deficiencies however week in week out he brings 100% effort and is so much more important to the side than many here realise.

Goal kicking accuracy/average is not very different than many other current big names in the AFL. But yeah take cheap shots at our good players if it makes you feel good.

Wellard

It’s an appreciation thread

And your comments at way off the mark

I can’t think of a better hit up forward in the AFL?!

What I find very notable about Membrey is that whenever I watch games with opposition supporters, they always comment on what a good player he is.
Sometimes you become so accustomed to your own teams strengths , that you can overlook them.
He is a terrific player, and that double foot leap is almost unique to him.

Members is the Jason Blake of the 2020's. He plays well above his size and shows up every week. He is one of the players who we can count on to do his job every week.

If we could just find another effective tall forward to take some heat off him, he would have a much bigger impact. Hopefully Hayes is that player next year and King has a huge off season in the gym.

With no disrespect to Blakey, one of my faves, Tim has far better skills, athletically and aerobically.

And I admire the way he has changed his game by necessity to cover more territory quickly during a game. He could only ever partially fill the void left by a champion who retired at the end of 2017 but he sure has a real crack.

Nothing wrong with Blake's aerobic capacity. Not as quick as Members obviously, nor the excellent turning circle which is an underrated part of Tim's play, he can turn on a dime

Blake was an aerobic animal

Only behind Andrew Thompson in Time Trials in early 2000s

Funnily enough
Harvey was not at the top - but older then I suppose - but different running to on a footy ground

The constant repeat burst efforts were Harves domain!

Last night On the Couch it was brought up why at times we didn't move the ball quickly into our forwardline when in the ascendancy from an opposition turnover

Will be keeping a close eye again on Membrey when he marks it up the ground / outside 50 ..... see how quickly he moves it on ..... as said good player but its one part of his game he can improve upon

If you like mediocrity, sure, put Skunk on a pedestal.
He's not in the top 20 forwards of the comp.
He's got skills and he works hard, never gives up, but his biggest faults are his goal inaccuracy, especially at crucial stages, and his poor kicks that usually don't go to a leading player.
Desire and work ethic are his best attributes, one of the best in the club, HOWEVER he can't finish the job reliably.

Starting to think Wellard's partner has a crush on Membrey or something?

Mediocre, poor kicks etc???

His kick efficiency this year is above 70% which is way ahead in the AFL pack
(that centered ball turnover last week was a deadset shocker but clearly an anomaly)

Some random comparisons Aaron Naughton kicking efficiency 59%, Shai Bolton is 55% Degumby is 53%.

Goal accuracy is in the 50% like most other fwds in the league. Has also nailed important goals on more than a few occasions this year. Yeah he missed some too but most afl players this year in the same bus. Maybe it is all the ferkakte advertisements flashing around. Enough to trigger an epileptic fit. Come to think of it when Paton didnt see those 5 players waving at him last game there was a red and black animated ad zooming around the fence behind them. Who approves that crap? Those ads are an abomination and devalues the game. Bet if they did studies on it all of that visual noise would be impacting players concentration.
