Nick Coffield is…

Post: # 1987207Post skeptic »

My pick for the player that’s going to improve out of sight over the course of 2023.

He was tearing it up pre-injury 2022 and by all accounts had improved out of sight. I don’t know how he’s tracking in his recovery but I reckon he’ll be more motivated then ever having had the time off.

My hope last year was that the penny dropped with the club and they were going to drop the nonsense of Coffield getting bigger, putting on mass and playing more key position… the kid is a runner that can jump. His ideal role is to be a play maker off a HBF and use that leap/grab of his to go third man up when need be.

More to that though… I reckon if Lyon is able to bring a particular structure/set up to our defence, I reckon it will really benefit Coffield’s style. He’s not a true mid and I don’t reckon he can be per’se but a running defender, that does a job, goes third man up when need be, set up play with good disposal off a flank and spreads the other way… kid has all the tools IMO.

Really excited to see what he brings to the table in 2023

Reminds me a bit of Goddard. Decision-making when he is “on” is potentially elite and disposal first-rate.

Just needs to be “on” most of the time.

Hope he gets a good run at it.

Not the worst call. Goddard was a very hesitant early on.

But he fixed that by his 3rd year and was a gun by his 4th year. Coffield is coming into his 5th year.

He was pretty good (a bit overrated imo) in 2020 but we could certainly utilise him if he gets back to that level.

He’s got to muscle someone out of the team, however, and he’s behind Sinclair and McKenzie. Got to get in front of Webster (3cm taller but doesn’t play like it) once and for all.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Knee reconstructions tend to get in the way, which was a factor early on for Goddard as I recall it.

The club thought he was set for a breakout 2022. Hopefully they were right … just a year out.

Speaking with him at the B&F he was quite bullish about being a part of the back 6 (7). He said he was on target with his rehab and hopes to take part in most of the pre season.

He was really happy with his 2022 pre season prior to the injury.

Of course, his desire to be a part of the defence was pre RTB but as mentioned above, there is a similarity with Goddard's early years being played everywhere, settling no where. I think RTB will love him & bring out his best.

Didn't convince me he had the attack on the contest needed to be a selection lock. Needs to be more proactive and focussed. He is a good size and is deceptively quick. He never really exploited his speed before his injury.

I believe he has enough ability to make it as a half back. Ross Lyon will demand more form him that his previous coaches, so hopefully he responds

Transcends the mental fragility of the teams DNA.

Once he has been touched by RLs magic wand he should transform into a hybrid of Dusty and Steven May.

It will take a little while for him to get full confidence in his knee, but when he does hopefully he can step up.

... a work in progress.

Nothing to suggest he won't be a good player for us. I'm looking forward to him pushing for a regular spot in the backline. It has to be said that the position that he seems best suited to is probably the easiest position in the team. The intercepting tallish defender. So he needs to be very good at it.

Coffield is the perfect size and skill set for the modern day wingman.
Whether he has the running capacity is questionable.

That is certainly where I'd like to see him played if fit and firing.

Ralph Clark NEVER hesitated - very courageous in the air!

Was often in two minds with the footy or hung on to it a bit too long!

How can you guarantee any place in the team they should all be up for grabs
I hope its not his favourites get in and stay in even if playing bad I hope aim wrong with my concerns.

First thing a coach says first night of training is all positions up for grabs.

Reality is it’s never true.

If that’s the case, then it’s odds on that Nick and JB and Hilly and maybe even Seb Ross will be among the first players to be dropped. They have to change the way they both defend…. and also the way they attack the footy from this point on
