It’s hilarious

The AFL put this demand (caveat) hoping it was very unlikely to be met

Eddie Maguire was all pro Tassie - when it was never going to get up

Now the AFL are going to have to put up or shut up

And Eddie was banging on about how bad it will be now - having changed his tune

AFL doesn’t want it
Clubs don’t want it

Fans want it
Tassie want it

Ones things for sure!
Tassie won’t get 12 of the first 18 picks in their first draft like GC & GWS did

Another hilarious point
Not enough kids drafted from there?
What they don’t get to have players born out of Tasmania

Why would people live we there
Maybe the lifestyle, maybe the beautiful city of Hobart, maybe the affordable housing, maybe the paycheque?

Sponsorship- they can be from anywhere in the world

Stadium
A disgusting act by the AFL
Demanding a under roof that holds 50 000 in a boutique market
GWS and GC stadiums were not 715 Million
Bellerive is a good stadium - just upgrade so that it holds 35 000
And it’s facilities are first rate
Gabba, SCG, MCG, Adelaide Oval, Optus - all cricket grounds

WTF does TAS need to cough up for an overpriced stadium?!

I’ll tell you why

They were held to Ransom

The obsession about the stadium is all about the failure of successive Tasmanian governments to come up with any sort of sensible strategy for using the land at Macquarie Point that used to be occupied by the old railyards until the line through Hobart to the wharves was closed a decade or two back. At first the plan was to move the hospital there, but there was a massive public outcry against it (and I can't exactly remember why). Then there was an idea of moving all the various Antarctic organisations in Hobart into the space, but that wasn't going to win too many votes or create a lot of media interest. So, in the absence of a better idea, we've ended up with a football stadium almost by default.

A football stadium, which by definition will be empty most of the time, is not a good use of such prime land IMO. But apparently York Park and Bellerive are not up to scratch in the AFL's view (although Bellerive looks perfectly ok to my eyes).

In the end, the taxpayer will be the loser, as per usual.

UTAS and Blundstone Arena have been fine as venues.
Why not keep using them?
Why bleed taxpayers for a vanity project?
Beggars belief.
They won't fill them to capacity.

Both grounds are good enough to play AFL footy now?

Surface is brilliant- the best in the AFL

Spend half that amount
Fully refurbished Bellerive (with input from Cricket Australia and Cricket TAS)

Spend another 25M on a training facility

Allow Tassie to target 1 uncontracted player from each club
Access to up to 4 FA’s
Access to home grown players (draft and OOC)
3 picks in each round of the draft in Year 1
1, 9, 18 19, 27, 36, 37, 46, 55 etc
2 picks in each round in Year 2
1, 9, 18, 27, 36 etc…

Ability (if they want) to trade only 1 pick in each round)

Nb- as a recruitment strategy Tas should do what Brisban did
Recruit country kids - who won’t miss the bright lights of the big city and enjoy a nice 200 000 size city to live

Team should obviously be called the TAS Devils

Tasmania are a foundation stone of Australian Rules Football - along with Victoria, South Australia and West Australia.

And look at the players they have provided to the VFL/AFL (including to St Kilda).

That they take their place in the Australian Football League competition is right and proper.

History dictates this.

In regards a suitable facility (and noting the support for the facilities enjoyed by all Clubs in the Competition - including St Kilda), the requirement is facilities equal to the facilities afforded to players across the Competition.

The description being "facilities", facilities which will include public amenity (as we see with St Kilda).

We see sporting facilities constructed across the Nation, and enhanced now to accommodate female participation.

Governments provide the funding, along with other entities such as Local Councils.

It is right and proper that Governments, both Federal and State, so fund, because government is not exclusively about the Balance Sheet (and not spending money).

It is also about society and public amenity, so the Arts and sport as start points.

I would suggest that the criticism of Federal Government (part) funding for a facility for Hobart, Tasmania we see on this site is attributed to the disappearing numbers that continue to vote Liberal, nothing more and nothing less.

The interesting thing will be if the AFL decision is for 19 sides, and if there are applications to field a 20th side.

thats it isnt it..all the jargon about the pros and cons of the stadium and team it has now all been reduced to "let's name it " lol
was always going to happen and as far as I'm concerned bring it on.

PS always have a chuckle about the never ending debate about Govt spending allocation. Can bitch about it till the sun goes down yet it happens anyway :)
Never in the history of man has govt spent money and all were happy.
having said that love seeing the self professed world changers on here telling us how it should be :)
one in particular ;)

My understanding is that footy is NOTHING like it used to be in Tassie. I can’t recall too many great players coming out of there in the past 10-15years. It’s an emotional argument made by former players who originated from there like Roo. But the reality is that we don’t need a Tassie team and I don’t believe they’ve done anything significant to deserve one, let alone have a billion dollar stadium for a population of that size. Madness
the crowd numbers, if you can call 10 people a crowd, at the Tassie game on the weekend transcends the absolute mania that exists for the beloved game of AFL in Tasmania, or so it would seem.

one word...Lobbyists!

"emotional" manipulation was perfectly deployed by the lobby group to convince the masses they are a "foundation stone"...what utter garbage in terms of justifying the creation of a financial lemon of a public asset to launder zillions of dollars into the offshore accounts of the TV rights and gambling moguls.

it's disgusting how easily we are manipulated.

Gil and the AFL board take instruction from their bosses. No!! Not the general public. The corporations and the big dogs.

They include executives from Channel 7 and Foxtel, and BHP and Woodside and Sportsbet and Toyota, the sponsors and coterie groups from existing AFL clubs, and not forgetting old money from the BlueBloods

If they want to watch their teams play this new Tassie outfit...they want their corporate box and they want facilities they have been used to at other AFL venues.

Not to mention, there's some nice earn for all parties who will be involved in the build and the management of the new venue

It’s over capitalising and a massive waste of money

Spend 250-300M on refurbishing

25-30M on a training facility

Save 400M on spending which doesn’t need to be spent!

And their profits will be off the back of desperate Victorians who risk their lives by clinging to a rusty red boat to flee a brutal dictatorship in the hope of finding work and starting a new life free from persecution and Collingwood supporters.

 8-)

I just don't understand why anyone is still living in Victoria. If we were to believe Murdoch and shows like Sunrise and A Current Affair we should have all moved to a better life in NSW and Queensland

I was going to respond with some facts regarding population numbers and how prosperous The Big V's economy has been under the brutal dictatorship, but facts (as you know) are no match to the perpetual propaganda coming from those who oppose the State owning infrastructure for the benefit of All Victorians.

The right wing media continue to demonise the Victorian Premier and paint a picture of debt for debt sake, ignoring the fact that we'll have superb assets that boost economic activity for the next 50 years

One minor point- wikipedia says Bellerive Oval has poor access.
Folks can take a ferry or a bus.
There is no proper parking nearby so lots of fans park in nearby streets, upsetting locals.
And the local council took over a local park as a car park, upsetting locals again

I watched Eddie and he was really obnoxious about the Tassie situation.
His facts were very selective he gave some bull to his lackeys on the the other seats like player numbers well how many players has gold coast produced or GWS so and how many people do go to games there.
The amount of money being throw at these 2 clubs is outrageous, then they put ridiculous restrictions on Tassie with the new stadium.
Hawthorn has 10,000 Tassie members not sure how many north have just imagine how many of these will follow a Tassie side plus the supporters of other teams who will start to follow a Tassie team.
I also remember the SA and WA teams playing at Footy park and Subiaco respectively and they were not great grounds but that was ok for the AFL then sounds like they wish to screw Tassie again.
The Jack jumpers in the NBL are a revelation in the way it was set up with a development program and feeder teams who play in the NBL1 from north and south.
It said it couldn't be done but look at the Jack jumpers so Eddie and the AFL get your heads out of your rear end and get a Tassie team in the AFL.

Come on now Vortex you are not at all intimating that Albo is corrupt 😱 ( heaven to Betsy - no way - he’s still in his media honeymoon period)?
No way is Albo thinking ahead, and wanting to get sporting Tassie voters onside to vote out the only State liberal government at their next election. Never 👎
