Players who have improved on their 2006 form
St Kilda players who have improved their performance from 2006 to 2007
Sam Gilbert
Leigh Montagna
Nick Riewoldt (arguable)
Nick Dal Santo (arguable)
That's it!
St Kilda players who until this year had played less than 15 games and have stepped up to senior football and showed they are going to make it at the top level
Sam Gilbert
That's it!
Is it any wonder we look like missing out on the finals?

Agree mostly.
Gilbert most improved by the straight at flemington.
Montagna played some ripping games, but still not consistant enough
Rewoildt played his best footy the last 2 months
Unsure about Dal,much of the same from him, brilliant one week, serviceable the next, taking a ride the next.
S.Fisher probably the same as last year.
Nearly all the rest have gone backwards....spells trouble for a club

I think Sam Fisher has continued to improve and has had a more consistent season than last year.
Dal - I would think not.
Montagna has had a very good season in 07. I believe he was quite disgruntled under GT.
Attard
Not too many really!
No doubt we are paying the price for a poor recruting over the past couple of seasons.......

Just a quick look at our drafting / trading this year and it's easy to see why
Armitage
Howard
Birss
Allen
Gardiner
M Clarke
Compare this with Port Adelaide
Boak
Stewart
Krakouer
Gray
Westhoff
Williams
Rodan
2 bit players V 4 regulars
To be successful you need new players to come in and make a contribution, particularly with our record of injuries over the recent past.

omg you don't draft youngsters expecting them to play regularly in their first year and usually if they do they are either superstars (ala Judd) or their develpment has already reached near it's peak. Only teams down near the bottom of the ladder play first years regualrly. Amazing some people here. See Gilbert last year.
I cant believe Montagna has been called inconsistent in 07..
I reckon there is no doubt out most improved this year! Last year Joey & Gram improved lengths & Joey has improved on that again.
He was once a bit player but now is a major concern for other teams..
He is a great chance to win our B&F because of his consistency...
Go Joey!!

Couldn't agree more. Even Riewoldt only got a brief blooding in his first season at the Saints: and we were at rock bottom.ausfatcat wrote:omg you don't draft youngsters expecting them to play regularly in their first year and usually if they do they are either superstars (ala Judd) or their develpment has already reached near it's peak. Gilbert's rise means that we have one more young player who has stepped up this year than do the Swans.
It's all very well getting excited about the likes of Port, but let's see how they go in the finals.
All this stuff about past recruitment decisions is becoming extremely tiresome.
Our list is just as good this year as it was last year and probably as the year before. Perhaps it hasn't improved as much as it needed to do in order for us to win a flag but - if we had hadn't had the terrible run with injuries and, perhaps, if we'd been coached a bit better (lordy hush ma mouth) - we still would have been odds on to make at least a PF (and, you never know, we still might get there).
Some of our players are underperforming from recent seasons: Gehrig, Dal, Harves (since the break), Baker, Hayes (but is recovering from injury), Goose (ditto), Gram (but we all think he is playing injured). But that's only to be expected when the team as a whole is badly out of form because of injuries, poor coaching (I must learn to control these outbursts), etc.

Re: Players who have improved on their 2006 form
I think Stevie Baker is a different player this year, with #43 often taking the tagging role, #10 is playing more attcaking role (goals!!) and I think that is an improvementcwrcyn wrote:St Kilda players who have improved their performance from 2006 to 2007

How about Sam Fisher? is definitely a better player
fqf
Not to many players could have improved or the side would have improved unless of course this game plan doesnt suit our players. I think at the moment it is a bit of both.
Not enough players improving or worse still going backwards and the style of play which is tiring on the legs and to watch and worst of all keeps sides in the contest due to lack of scoreboard pressure.

blake is better = recovering from his back injury. again folks forget how he was an auto selection before being cracked by stafford I hope someone cracks stafford back
kosi had no impact in 06, getting better in 07
leigh fisher is better in 07, didn't have much impact in 06
monty started the season very well but is looking tired right now
lenny hayes is running into early 06 form and 07 will be better
fiora is better
Gilbert is a revelation
on some of the others
fisher was a very good player in 06, can't see that he is that much better in 07, in the absence at various times of max and maguire he was great in defence. I dont really think he is better used as a loose man than as a marking defender, in fact I think he is losing touch a bit.
i think folks underestimate how good our defence was in 06 often missing players through injury.

i reckon monty is a marvel,Halo Halo wrote:Montagna looking tired?? He had the most possestions from either side again last week!
He had two games that werent very good but he played well on Saturday night - Didnt look tired to me!!
the one thing I think the team is missing is a head kicker such as powell.
as such I think our midfielders come in for 'treatment' ball, dal santo and montagna would be three targetted.
what we need is a powell/keogh/greig willing to ramrod the opposition and provide passage for our midfielders.
I guess I underestimated his contribution against shytney.
marvellous player and rising rapidly in the ranks at st kilda.

Don't forget this is the same person that said Gram is carrying an injury after one bad game.Halo Halo wrote:Montagna looking tired?? He had the most possestions from either side again last week!

As for the question, I think our improved players are.
Joey, Fiora, Blake, Gilbert.
And hack pup is out again, bowled without troubling the scorers.

Blake's injury has never affected his form at all.Dan Warna wrote:blake is better = recovering from his back injury. again folks forget how he was an auto selection before being cracked by stafford I hope someone cracks stafford back.
He hardly played in 2003, played the first 2 games of 2004 (nothing spectacular) and was injured in round 3. He was never a regular player and his performance hardly altered when he returned. This year he has been given a different role and more game time and is having a good season.
Just because you repeat this line 50 times per week it doesn't make it true.
Have to agree. If Blake was so badly injured how did he ruck all last year. His back is fine as far as I know.mad saint guy wrote:Blake's injury has never affected his form at all.Dan Warna wrote:blake is better = recovering from his back injury. again folks forget how he was an auto selection before being cracked by stafford I hope someone cracks stafford back.
