My Team

Post: # 506068Post Huzzad »

Not sure if there is an old thread floating around for these, if there is I did not find it. Anyway, here is my starting line-up for 08 (Assuming everyone is fit, and discounting injuries and suspensions.)

BP/FB/BP: L.Fisher Hughthon Maguire

HB/CB/HB: Gram S. Fisher Baker

W/C/W: Montagna Hayes Goddard

HF/CF/HF: Schneider Riewoldt Dempster

FP/FF/FP: Kosi Gehrig Milne

RU/RR/R: King Dal Santo Ball

Interchange: M.Gardiner, Harvey, Fiora, Gilbert

Emergency: Jones, McEvoy, X.Clarke, Armitage, Attard

Who would you put in the starting 22?

Roo on the wing? Interesting choice. Not sure if I would put him there myself....seems best used in running bursts on the lead, wouldn't want him spent by half-time, but interesting option for him.

not the worst suggestion. he does have a huge tank on him and endurance is probably his strength.

Roo used to play on the wing when he was a junior

193cm wingman are hard to find and especially someone as hard working as Roo

We have a good forward line with Kosi down there, Roo would be better on the wing and a lot of us have said that over the last few years

Thats why Gilbert looks so good on the wing, tall, fast and neat finisher

Hard to match up on

193cm gun CHFs are harder to find. Playing on the wing he might average 25 disposals and 12 uncontested marks. He would be useful, but we have a host of players who would be almost as good. Playing at CHF he might average 18 disposals, 10 marks (several contested), 3 goals and 3 goal assists.

A star CHF is more useful than a gun wingman. Kosi can't be relied on to hold down CHF He doesn't have the engine and isn't all that durable.

C: X.Clarke, Hayes, Montagna
HF: Harvey, Riewoldt, Schneider
F: Gehrig, Koschitzke, Milne

I can't believe so many people put Fisher at CHB. He's a good player, but no where near good enough defensively to hold a Pavlich or Brown to less than about 10 goals.

B: S.Fisher, Hudghton, L.Fisher

C: Goddard, Hayes, Montagna

It might be time to check some facts. Maguire, and to a lesser extent Hudghton missed chunks of 2007 leaving Sam Fisher to hold the backline together. There were even times when his only "Tall" support down back was James Gwilt !!

since we tend to direct nearly every attack at roo you'd expect him to rack up quite a few touches

we actually almost need him to perform at least that well every week for us to be any sort of a chance

imo one of our greatest strengths ... riewoldt ... is also a glaring weakness, often exploited by opponents, and we have become, at times, pathetically reliant on him.

we need a much more even spread of goal-kicking options and, imo, kosi playing as a permanent forward is just a start.

i probably don't need to remind you that we were 14th in the league for converting inside 50s to goals last year and had just three guys who kicked more than 30 for the season.

geelong were first and had five.

i do agree with you, however, that roo should stay a forward rather than a winger, even though he'd be very, very good in that position.

the challenge is to fit riewoldt, kosi and fraser into the same forward line.

all are top players and team-minded and there has to be a way for this to translate to more goals for st kilda and a forward line that is more efficient at turning opportunities into goals

that's my rant

correct ..which is why Sean Dempster was recruited ..I would expect to see him as a backup to Fisher & Max

i am a little bemused at the selection of charlie gardiner in some posters 22 considering he did nothing with the cats when they were going poorly last year and he was getting opportunity after opportunity

prove me wrong though

Others may disagree, but I see Dempster less as a key defender (without Maguire and Hudghton, I'd still expect to see Sam Fisher and then Gwilt manning the key defender positions), and more as a guy who will play a utility role like Blake's... with the influx of rucks, it's unlikely that Blake sees any time there at all, making him a defensive utility only. Tag, add height down back, which is pretty much what Dempster did in Sydney.

What Dempster has that Blake doesn't is the ability to kick a long ball, which is a get out of jail card that would really have been handy when the game was close and Blake ended up isolated with the ball and nowhere to go.

I don't actually see Dempster in the 22 round 1, but Blake's spot will be under pressure (as always).

if blake gets another top 10 b and f placing next year (without dramatic improvement and awareness) we will have seemingly gone backwards

sad but true

let's hope these new guys are made to earn their stripes.

king, i would think, is an automatic selection in round 1 but with the others let's not make the mistake of thinking that because they're new they're automatically better.

blake has always been able to hold off the competition in the past and it will not surprise me in the least to see him do it again.

he seems to be well thought of by the coach and did well in the best and fairest last season. like everyone he has weaknesses, but is underrated in my opinion

Also..........Attard is recovering from a knee reco, meaning he will miss a large chunk of 2008. This would then put other rookies ahead of him in the pecking order for most/all of 2008.

It would be much better if we didn't have any long term injuries, meaning this discussion/debate would be irrelevent !!
