Six degrees of Robert Harvey

Post: # 584785Post my les foote »

From the "Did Harvey play with Barker thread"

Nine players can cover the history of the Saints in the VFL / AFL. Can it be done with less players? Can any of the other original teams do it with less? If Harvey and Hudghton retire at the end of the year, can we still do it with nine players?

Joe Hogan 1897 - 1906 91 games
Vic Cumberland 1903 - 1920 126 games
Bill Cubbins 1915 - 1930 149 games
Bill Mohr 1929 - 1941 195 games
Harold Bray 1941 - 1952 156 games
Neil Roberts 1952 - 1962 169 games
Ross Smith 1961 - 1975 234 games
Trevor Barker 1975 - 1989 230 games
Robert Harvey 1988 - ? 369 games

I can't say for sure that these guys played with each other eg. Joe Hogan and Vic Cumberland but both were at the club and playing senior football for at least one year together.

It's times like these that I really wish West of Moorabbin was up and running!

My first reaction was - wow, that's pretty amazing research!

But I would also suggest - not to disrespect them, but perhaps to reduce the list... if you put Barry Breen in, as opposed to Trevor Barker or Ross Smith.. Breen was our game record holder at one time... would that reduce the size of the list? Not sure. And I don't know how to do this kind of research.

No, Barry Breen doesn't help the list - he debuted in 1965, after Ross Smith had already started playing and finished in 1982, before Barks had finished and Harves had started, So whilst he played with both Smaith and Barks, he couldn't replace them on the list.

Why don't you really impress us Les and come up with a list of continuous games linking the players through the history of the club?

I'm loving this - underdogs at 3 to 1, grand final experience in our favor and Pies over confident. Go Saints - I'm loading up!
