Who should inherit?

Post: # 608136Post 3rd generation saint »

As it seems likely the great man Robert Harvey will retire at season's end, hopefully very late September with the medal he seeks the most, and keeping with tradition set by Burkey and Stewie, who do you think may inherit the number 35?

Hope he goes around again personally.

If he does retire then I hope he gives it to Jack Steven.

Maybe this year?

Man I'd love to see Stevo get it, as a Beda boy. But dont you think it's a little risky to give the most famous number at our club to an untried 18 year old?

Personally, I reckon Armo or Geary. Cos out of the current crop Im most confident they'll be guns.

Burkie to X. That was inspired.

My feeling is that the great man will just retire graciously.
I don't think it will concern him at all who takes his number. He started with 52.

A lot of pressure to put on a kid who is yet to play a game. It's the type of pressure that could destroy someones career.

Bigred - I agree - The number 35 is sacred to us all - and as such should be afforded the honour of being retired - Harves will not ask it to be - we should just all demand it.

But, having said that, I want to see it being worn next year.

Let Harvs decide as it is now a great tradition started by the club.

Fiora

No, seriously... retire it, unless HE wants to pass it down.

Funny though that the #3 and #23 were handed down, but neither player has lived up to the hype so far.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

Dunno about hype, but both players have great skill and are still about 25. So let's not judge too soon.

You are right.

I believe there is room, especially at club level, away from match day, for some sort of sentimentality.

Banger and Trevor Barker, are just the heart and soul of the place.

Hanging up the jumper would be a strong mark of respect.

Banger would'nt be interested though.

Harvs will more than likley pass it on the same way Burkey and Buckets did. Intresting to note though that the famous #4 worn by legends like Baldock and Lockett is in moth balls this season.

I wonder if Thomo didnt select a player to pass it too or the decision was made to put it aside for a year but I would love to see the #4 back next year. IMHO #4 could be worn by our captain like Port do with #1 and Richmond do with #17. Pobably wont work but it was just a thaught

Considering it is a high number, unlike 3 or 23, I think the club should leave it vacant for at least a few years.

Retire it, enlargen it to huge flag size - and hang it from the rafters of the Dome - hell I even started a campaign 2 years ago to have the wing named in his honor.

The huge 35 would be a great reminder to all players - of the qualities needed to succeed!

Well, it would be up to Harves.

On one hand, if Harves went to just about any Saint and asked the question you'd think they'd take him up. On the other, if he doesn't, it may well end up virtually retired regardless of what the club does... it would take a lot of guts to ask for #35 as a kid coming up, and by the time you've justified yourself to that extent, you're probably wearing a lower number anyway, so may well not even want to change.

While we're making player suggestions, mine would be Clinton Jones. He certainly doesn't have the dodging skills that Harves did during his prime (well, few players can hold a candle to Harves during his prime 10 years ago), but his game is built on hard work and speed.

If you'd told me I'd make that suggestion 12 months ago I would have accused you of being on crack.

For what it's worth with the comments on X and Kosi, and then mys suggestion of CJ for #35, I don't look at the handing down of numbers as being "these guys will be the best players", more as "these guys are really good clubmen who we want to be career Saints". If we're waiting for another Harves to be able to wear #35, we'll be waiting a long time.
