Goddard: living up to top billing
Michael Gleeson | July 3, 2009

EARLIER this year, Brendon Goddard burst into a manager's office at St Kilda with a head of steam. He had just read that Melbourne had more members than St Kilda.

How could this happen? Melbourne, for God's sake! It couldn't win a game and had more members than St Kilda? Something had to be done: a telethon, something, anything.

The moment revealed several things about Goddard: first, the competitive beast within that cannot stomach a rival besting him at anything; second, that he hurts for the club, not just for the team.

Several weeks ago there was a mix-up on the ground and the Saints found themselves without a ruckman at the centre bounce. So Goddard took the tap. "He is a very competitive beast and that is what has made him a good player," coach Ross Lyon said. "He is the classic modern footballer. There aren't many positions he can't play — not that we plan on playing him in the ruck — but he will do that and being a competitor he will do OK."
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Another similarly moulding moment in that early career came when Collingwood made a serious bid to lure him. "I was really young and financially it looked really good but I never saw myself playing for another team so at the end of the day it was never really an issue," he said. "As much as they can offer you deals and perks along the way, I could not live with myself if I was to move to another footy club." Goddard has been St Kilda's everywhere man on the field, swinging into every position on the ground. But the club is equally his everything.

thanks BJ

Interesting read.

"When I got here I think they thought he was a player without position; they bulked him up to 97 kilograms and played him centre half-back but he was a mid. He runs exceptionally well — speed endurance."

He was hardly a slouch as the rebound man out of defense either... there are players that coaches can make look good (e.g. IMO Lyon's been great for Blake), and players that can make coaches look good. Goddard's one of the latter.

How many times did BJ play at CHB? I cannot remember it happening.

Did he fill in there when Goose got injured or was he groomed as a permanent CHB?

BJ also did a great - really honest - interview in The Age just as he was starting his comeback from the knee reco. He made a point of the realisation that missing nearly a season had made him aware of how quickly the footy career goes and that you only get one shot at it. He had just come back from the States for memory.

The way he and Lenny have come back from reco's is a credit to both of them and the club management.

There were multiple occassions when all of Max, Goose and Sam Fisher were injured in 2007, possibly 2006 and Goddard and Jason Gram were playing full back and centre-half back

Reincarnated stated at the time that this would only assist both players versatility for coming years if and when injury came about

Both players were beaten however showed they could come close to breaking even. Goddard played on players like Lloyd, Lucas and Brown

Saints43 doesn't remember reincarnated even being on the forum in 2006/2007. And the joining year of 2009 suggests you weren't.

And which games did BJ & Gram (!?!) play at either CHB or FB?

It's a pretty simple question... if you don't know - don't reply.

Reincarnated points out that he attends games with other human beings but also talks to other human beings about football but in particular st.kilda

Simple answer, rounds 2 and 3 of 2006 against Essendon and someone else. Goddard went to Lloyd and Gram went to Lucas, both didnt go too poorly however were beaten in a team that was flogged that day

Happy with the simple answer???

Or will you continue you semi-aggressive tone?

In Round 2 2006 we played Richmond. In Round 3 2006 we played Brisbane.

Maguire & Fisher played in both matches. And Hudghton played in Round 3.

If Gram played at CHB and BJ at FB in either of those matches then it's no wonder GT got the arse.

And reincarnated's first paragraph would almost constitute nonsense.

And don't PM me again.

In short, no, not happy with that answer.

I think the more relevant point that BJ was ballooned up like a gorilla (remember all those Mr Universe-like training pics of BJ???)....all at the time when the trend was about increasing aerobic capacity and run.

Now it is much more Buckley like in how he is being used.

And the best of BJ is about to come IMO.

IMO he is about to really start dominate games as a free ranging player......

I do remember Gram playing on a younger Buddy Franklin.
It was either early last year or the year before that.
