Definitely Fiora out from the wing, I'd push Heath Black forward to the wing and then give Pekin a spot on the HBF.

And, as others have said, Morris has to be CHB. Maybe push Morwood to the other HBF and drop Jack to the bench. He's still ahead of Ray, for mine, though hopefully not in another year.

Sheldon is probably ahead of McConville on the ball. (In my memory, anyway...)

Then you could play Heatley next to Gehrig in the forward line and put McConville on the bench. Or otherwise drop McConville from the side and bring in Gotch or O'Brien if you want a specialist forward pocket.

Technically Carl Ditterich is not a recycled player as he played for the Saints first, so I would move either King or Gardiner in the #1 ruck position and have Hunt on the bench. The same can be said for Jayson Daniels and maybe have Rene Kink on the bench as well

out of the team, in terms of contribution to the club not just who was the best player, (not including ditteritch since he started out here) you'd have to say Gehrig would be the best by a fair bit, followed by Hammill and Gram .

I'm not familiar with some of those names, but it certainly looks like our recruiting has improved a fair bit from the late 90's onwards.

Agree. it is an interesting exercise with more twists and turns than a Paul Callery baulk. It would be easy to generalise and say that we have had a lot more success with recycled players thesedays, compared to say the '80's when we seemed to keep our fingers crossed, recruit players at the end of their careers or those with significant baggage (Jacko!!) etc. The fact of the matter is that the landscape has changed significantly since then with drafts, salary caps and so on. We just have to keep up with the landscape as it continues to develop... and I think have done a fantastic job of it in the last few years.

Another interesting historical note is that in the years from 67 - 71 there were virtually no recycleds coming into the club, apart from Bond and Barrot from memory.

I'll go with everyone's feedback here and present..with notes...the final Best Of on Monday night as promised. Following that I'm working on a best of team from down the Great Western Highway. That's a few days away yet.

Thanks to all the contributors to this thread, has kept me busy during a week when I've been laid up with a killer sore throat.

Sad reading is this post. It shows how pathetic the culture of our club was for years..poor leadership from the top down, next to no development of young players- just buy any discard from a club regadless of fit, and the ultimate result is more failure. In contrast is the current club culture, where we see real development planning, recruiting of recycled players only if they serve a particular purpose or resolve a weakness. I wish our current culture existed in the late 70s and through the 80s, we may have a had another flag up our sleeves.

THE FINAL LINE UP (for mine!)

B Matthew Young (HAW) Zac Dawson (HAW) Brett Voss (BRIS)
HB Jayson Daniels (SYD) Russell Morris (HAW) Robert Mace (HAW)
C Jason Gram (BRIS) Stephen Powell (MEL) Tim Pekin (FITZ)
HF Dean Anderson (HAW) Aaron Hamill (CAR) Craig O'Brien (ESS)
F Ken Sheldon (CAR) Fraser Gehrig (WC) Silvio Foschini (SYD)
RR Peter McConville (CAR)
R Carl Ditterich (MEL) Paul Callery (MEL)

INT: Rex Hunt (GEE), Heath Black (FREO) Graeme Bond (RICH), Paul Harding (HAW)

COACH: Ross Lyon (BRIS)

MATTHEW YOUNG (HAW)...97 games post Hawthorn. Squeezed every ounce of ability out of his body but was a sometime whipping boy with some horror clangers. Still holds out others at BP.

ZAC DAWSON: (HAW)...23 games, still holds out Luke Penny (45) as a genuine full back.

BRETT VOSS: (BRIS)...135 games, unchallenged and amongst the first picked in this group.

JAYSON DANIELS: (SYD)...41 games post Sydney. Still qualifies under (my!!) recycled rules. Serviceable and a crowd favourite upon return. We loved the JD.

RUSSELL MORRIS: (HAW)...66 games. The faithful have spoken. The Fly pushed Paul Morwood to the apologies list.

ROBERT MACE: (HAW)...72 games, probably best in the forward pocket but was also used to pinch hit across half back from time to time. Edges Black to the bench. Was always a tough unit.

JASON GRAM: (BRIS)...99 games, amongst first picked. Will surely challenge Callery, Pekin, Gehrig and Voss for most games played of the recycleds.

STEPHEN POWELL: (MEL)...68 games, another who gave all with what he had. The Ling hit forever etched in the memories those who saw it.

TIM PEKIN: (FITZ)...112 games, the handball king, great pick up from the Roys. Jettison's Fiora to the apology list.

DEAN ANDERSON: (HAW)...67 games. Unfairly maligned, started as a Saint but didn't make it to the senior list before arriving at the Hawks. Could have easily been a 150+ gamer for the Saints in retrospect.

AARON HAMILL: (CARL)...98 games. Amongst first picked and hands down the best ever from Carlton. We loved The Hammer.

CRAIG O'BRIEN: (ESS)...52, ironically (given his only stints at FF were when TL was injured or suspended, when the two were at the club at the same time) followed Plugger to Sydney, but good enough in this team to push Jezza (well into the twilight of his career at St.Kilda) to the apology list.

KEN SHELDON: (CAR)...53 games, in this traditional resting posi for the rover, for mine he was ahead of Gotch and Mitchell.

FRASER GEHRIG: (WC)....145 games and Captain of this team! Will we ever see another recycled 145 gamer have the same impact as the Mighty G?

SILVIO FOSCHINI: (SYD)...69 games, always dangerous around goals and made it cool to want to be traded to the Saints. Better than any others in this position IMHO.

PETER McCONVILLE: (CAR)...54 games, gave great service and one the Blues were actually sorry to see go.

CARL DITTERICH: (MEL)...50 games second time around. Still qualifies and still has a place in the hearts of the faithful. Many still don't forgive him for the Demons stint. IMO get over it, Big Carl was terrific.

PAUL CALLERY: (MEL)...105 games. Pint sized but all courage, took on all comers. Amongst the first picked.

ROSS LYON: (BRIS/FITZ)... best in this era (against the criteria) hands down. Best in this era anyway.

REX HUNT: (GEE)...57 games, was still good enough when he arrived at the Saints. Edges out Farren Ray, Gardiner or King, but hopefully they'll reclaim their places in the future. Pushes Jason Heatley off the bench. Toughest call but Rex is in!

HEATH BLACK: (FREO)...53 games,. This thread is not about potting ex-players. Love him or loath him, we missed his drive (and grunt) when he went back west. Controversial inclusion.

GRAEME BOND: (RICH)...56 games, still had enough to make it to the pine in this line up. Could go small forward or back pocket so in for team balance and demanded by some of the faithful.

PAUL HARDING: (HAW)...62 games, gave great service and in this team as Big Carl's back up. Great player but hopefully will be overtaken by Gardiner or King in the near future.

Apologies to:

Aaron Fiora, Brad Gotch, Kristian Bardsley, Gavin Mitchell, Alex Jesaulenko, Ricky Nixon, Michael Gardiner, Farren Ray, Steven King, Paul Morwood, Jason Heatley.

Thanks again to all contributors to this thread!

Very good comment, spert. I guess the draft has given the clubs the power to negotiate without brown paper bags of money and contracts written on a serviette at the Old Melbourne Hotel....

...and conversely with the glass half full, it shows how professional we are now and I don't think we will ever have days like that again.

Excellent, thanks for all the hard work, Elvis.

At its best that team would go well, but (unsurprisingly) lacks the out-and-out superstars with flair that win you big games. If only Brian Wilson and Jezza had come across a couple of years earlier...

Indeed..I remember a game at Princes Park v Hawks one day, Scott was on 100 goal pace in the 2nds, so they gave him 1/2 game before taking him off and playing him in the firsts, such was our need for a key forward
