So Who Do You Stop?

Post: # 1840145Post BarryGrogan »

Who gets the best defender?

Who gets the second best?

Who gets the 3rd stringer?

You can't put a third stringer on Marshall. Membrey would eat the 3rd defender for breakfast.

King might have the luxury of his first season with the 3rd defender.

What about the midfield?

Hill gets the best yeah? So Hannebury and Ross will get the 2nd and 3rd?

Means Clark, Dunstan, Sinclair and whoever goes through there suddenly has it much easier.

What about the half back line? Do they shut down Savage still? So Billings is off the chain? Or will Coffield now get no attention and have the extra second or two use the pill?

Man, it instantly looks very different, doesn't it.

See these posts make little sense to me. Looking at one list in isolation is very limited... without comparing to the quality of other lists.

Even worse when fantasising about players like Coffield and Savage and Sinclair which comparatively are every average players when actually benchmarking to other AFL players. Like it or not.

We will have players finally able to get of the chain as we have some decent depth. Hill will get most of of the attention now but he's also in the top 5 two way runners in the league, so he's hard to lock down. Last year all you had to do was keep Seb quite, lock down Savage and made sure Gresh and Billings didn't get too much of the pill and we were done. This year we have others the opposition will have to worry about and it means we will start to see better games from these players.

Players like Sincs, Billings and Gresh will have better games and more influence as there just not going to get the attention they have in the past. We need Hanners to have a big year to really get things moving. I like the thought of Jones, Steele and Dunstan as our midfield bulls. Clark is going to be a star and Coff isn't going to be too far behind him. We're still one genuine midfield star short, to be a real threat though.

Marshall King and Membrey will be a tough forward line and great for crumbing players.
Gresham, Lonie and Butler should have a few field days.

If Battle is to be used as a genuine Swing player off the bench it gives a lot of flexibility to switching it up, especially with Ryder there too.

In the midfield Hill and Hannas will take the tag off Ross.
Steele will go to the opposition best.

Jones coming in will give another option off the bench also.

Agree with the OP that we certainly look different this year.
But obviously depends on Ratts getting the best out of them.

Sinclair is going to be a player to watch in 2020. I think he's like a few others in that he was young and inexperienced and surrounded by young and inexperienced so he had a tough apprenticeship. But he's a beautiful kick and he's entering that prime age/games bracket so there has never been a better opportunity for players like him to take their game to a new level.

I think he will lock down a forward flank and be asked to use his kicking skills to pick off players in good spots within F50 which I think is the main tweak to our game plan by BR.

I'm bullish he's going to have a breakout year.

But this is the interesting part.

Savage is average as a no. 1 running back. That's predominately why we're an average team - we have 2nd rate blokes playing key roles.

We have a 2nd rate kick as our no. 1 offensive mid.

Etc. Etc.

But with Billings playing a deeper, genuine half back role - will Savage actually be able to play a role he is capable of?

Will Lonie now be able to be a small forward who gets the odd crumb - instead of being our only scoring option?

Ross doesn't have to attempt offensive plays that he isn't capable of now.

Talls
King & Membrey (plays tall)
Rotation talls
Marshall & Ryder & Battle

Smalls
Lonie, Butler, Long (?), Parker (med) Kent, Hind
Rotation smalls
Billings & Gresham

Forwards I think they’ll name round 1:
Billings King Gresham
Membrey Ryder Lonie/Butler

I can't remember having this much depth for a very long time.

Gone are the days of one-on-one defense. The opposition defensive structure will line up based on how we set up. Whoever is deep will get the best defender in that area, whoever is playing high will get the runners.

We should still be able to exploit these matchups with our combination of size and athleticism.
