The under contributing small’ish forward

Post: # 1851874Post skeptic »

I’ve banged on about this a bit this year but the problem has really reared its head in today.

Our structure is flawed to a degree because we have too many of this type of player and they all have largely have the same problem...
They don’t contribute enough if they don’t kick goals.

3/4 today
Lonie 7d, 1.1
Butler 3d, 1.0
Kent 5d 1.0
Marsh 3d

And we are getting SMASHED in the midfield and don’t have enough run, are not enough around the contest.

IMO having more than two of this type of player = loser strategy.

It’s a low % play because you’re relying on players that aren’t ball winners to make the most of limited opportunities.

Now Butler has the runs on the board though has been beaten today
Lonie has been down for a few weeks,.. Kent has gotten timely goals but done little else and Marsh has had a decent crack but it’s time for someone else to get a goal.

It’s time for us to move away from this model.

Yeah but Hill is such a super star that he’ll get us over the line in so many games. His run is amazing. He was worth every cent and anyone who doesn’t understand that ...well ...they don’t understand the modern game

Seriously though...I agree with what you are saying. We were on a hiding once they got going. A few fumbles, a few dropped marks and some slack opportunities to spoil or defend meant that the lackof sleep factor was going to play a part..imo

Ratts needs to keep them fresh. Play Parker and play some other blokes like Hind. Make sure they work their arses off, otherwise we’ll be demanding half our membership money

The club has had a really long and challenging experience this week just to turn up for the TV appearance. Making it look like a genuine elite game of AFL was always going to be tough and a secondary activity.

How many inside 50s? It felt like it barely made it down there.

I look at a guy like Butler and think that for all of his good games... the odd one like today is inevitable, and that’s ok. But t have 4 players like that in there.

Gresh should be a small forward punch hitting in the middle. Not a starting on baller resting in the bench. Drop Kent give Brynes/Bytel a crack in the middle. Worked ok for Selwood/Worpel to play mid in their first years.

You maybe, not me.

Not that I thought today's performance was ok . It wasn't.

Sensational post. Makes perfect sense and an excellent comparison with Selwood / Worpel. Get a proper midfielder in there FFS - that, Gresham is not.

Agreed.

It should be Gresh + one of Butler, Lonie, Kent, Parker or Marsh... as small forwards.
(At the moment Butler of course)

+ an extra mid
